Scanning some old slides into my digital files, These were taken in 1968 using a Spotmatic. I was stationed at a remote weapons range in the sahara dessert, thats where I got interested in photography. The 1st picture is a shot from our U6 airplane as we approached Tripoli, have no idea what the equivalent iso would be was using ektacrome film. the second pix was the sun setting over the dessert with one of the range spotting towers in the pix.

People B&W christmas mood

Hi :)

Just posting a little christmas b&w-photo with my oldest daughter as motive.
The picture is taken at the town square, where the tree (spruce) is set for public viewing and maybe some christmas spirit:)

Unfortunately, there`s little -not to say nada- snow right now in Andenes, Norway...

But things have a tendency to work out just fine, so I`m not too concerned. Yet.
:D

Charlotte, however is happy as long as she gets to be around this tree now and then. Very fascinated of the old, pretty tree.

Sometimes I wish I still was her age, two-three years old. And could just have that concern in life.. Oh joy.

Merry christmas in advance, hope to post some more cheery christmas-related photos eventually :)

Fire on Water

Lens focalized 'past infinity', pointed to water reflection of a (close) street light. Yelow tone characteristic of Sodium vapor lamps. Photo taken hand held at Iso 6400 and shutter 1/320s. Post processed at Lightroom, exclusively for lumiance noise reduction.

(Updated due to changes in color in the uploading process. Aparently the attachment manager compressed the origonal file. Hope the re-edited picture looks nicer than the previous one :p)

Landscape Some Autumnal Streams

It's been a fine damp autumn here in the hills of East Tennessee. Falling leaves are settling into the streams - becoming an important food source for many stream invertebrates and making for some lovely aquatic scenes...

One of the innumerable riffles along Hampton Creek - a great trout stream in Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area near the town of Roan Mountain Tennessee:

A fine little waterfall along Laurel Run in Hawkins County Tennessee:

Several small rapids at Sill Branch in the Clark's Creek area of Washington County Tennessee:

A few views of the lower falls at Sill Branch:

And one more - a foggy sunrise at McPheeter's Bend along the Holston River:

Hope you enjoy these glimpses of the wetter side of an East Tennessee Autumn, and that you will share your comments, critique & suggestions!

A look at the yellow flowers I saw on my drive to work, sadly all gone as the season changes. Finding the wonderful view of the world from a manual focus lens. enjoy

Get off of the porch. ;)

There are technical aspects of that frame that could have been done better (it's a couple stops under exposed) but mostly it's simply not a very interesting picture. Who cares, it's done - so go improve your next photo...

You can read books, take classes, attend workshops, ad nauseam, but to really improve your photography you have to "get off the porch" and go make photos. Lots of photos. Every day make more photos.
99 and forty-four one-hundredths of them will absolutely suck. For a while your real keepers will be accidental. Gradually you'll learn how to achieve good results on purpose.
  • Strive to make at least one deliberate photo per day. Momentum is a powerful force in creativity and learning activities.

  • Get prints made of photos the you like. Bits and bytes are transient, paper is permanent. Making prints puts tangible value to your photographs. Value builds confidence; confidence builds competence.

  • Set your camera to Manual exposure mode and manual focus for a full month. Don't whine, just do it. You'll be shocked by the difference between Day 1 and Day 30.

  • Join one of the Monthly Challenges here on PF. Get your work in front of other people and get their critiques and advice. Ansel Adams had Alfred Stieglitz; you've got Pentax Forums.

I'm glad you shared your photo here, it was interesting to see it and read the comments. I agree that it probably isn't a prize winning shot - but it is good step on the path to getting some of those prize winners. You aren't the only person here who is practising - I am too.

If you have prime lenses, start using those. You'll stop depending on the zoom and you'll move around and get better shots. There's an old saying that if your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough. Whatever it is you want to shoot, stick your lens right up on it.

Of course this won't work with the sun and moon, but they've been shot so many times that it's best to just leave them alone at this point. Rarely are sunset and sunrise pictures very good.

Want to know a secret? Some of the best pictures are made in the worst weather. This shot is probably my signature image. There really wasn't anything technically difficult about it. The hardest part was getting myself out to the railroad museum early on a cold, snowy day. After that, I positioned myself at the end of the turntable and let the steam locomotive do the hard work.

So get up early, go out in a blizzard, brave the cold, etc. It'll suck, but the photos will be worth it! ;)
