I think we will all agree that batteries are an issue with these cameras. Lithium AAs work great, but they are expensive and one-use only. NiMH are hit-and-miss. I did a search on the thread and only found one mention about Li-Ion batteries. A couple of years ago, I started using Kastar CR-V3 3V Li-Ion rechargeable batteries. I bought 4 batteries and 2 chargers and that way I can keep a spare set charged and ready to go. I think it cost me around $12.50 on Amazon for 2 batteries and a charger. The Li-Ion batteries put out the correct voltage for the camera, 3V x 2 = 6V, as opposed to NiMH batteries which only put out 1.35V x 4 = 5.4V. Also, the Li-Ion batteries seem to have a higher capacity and don't self-discharge as quickly. Anyway, I thought I would mention this as I found it made a huge difference for me by removing the battery pain-point that seems to afflict these cameras.

I would question whether that was actually Shake Reduction (SR) and not Pixel Shift (PS) that the photographer was evaluating.

I don't know when it was actually introduced, but I found a webpage for it from May of 2015, so hardly new news. And yes, Pentax Medical is still a part of Hoya.

Yes, this is now considered a "price of entry" feature, whether most people would use it or not.
"WitsView expects the market share of high-resolution (4K or higher) products to reach 42.8% in 2018, up from 37.1% at the end of last year, adding that more than 95% of the 55” or above products use 4K resolution." (emphasis is mine) 4KTVs build market presence as global LCD TV shipments fall to three-year low | 4K/UltraHD | News | Rapid TV News
It's what people are buying. If I am buying a camera right now that I want to use for video, I would absolutely want it to be able to produce great video on the TVs that are being sold right now, even though I only have a 1080p set in my living room at the moment. (My next set will be 4K for sure)

You've already called out 3 of the differences:
- 14 bit color
- quiet shutter (rated for 200,000 actuations)
- top LCD screen
Some others:
- Magnesium body construction
- Faster burst shooting
- Larger buffer
It's important to note that the K-5ii came out in 2012 while the K-S2 came out in 2015, and many of the formerly "premium" features managed to find their way into the K-S2 (and some features are now in the entire lineup), including:
- 11 AF points
- Weather Resistance (all Pentax SLRs)
- Pentaprism viewfinder (all Pentax SLRs)
Features in Pentax's newest "semi-pro" cameras include:
- Dual card slots
- 27 AF points
- Pixel shift resolution (all Pentax SLRs)
Also, one feature that the K-S2 has that is not available in the K-5ii is the ability to use P-KA4 (electronic aperture) lenses, such as the new 55-300mm.

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but can the screen be flipped all the way down under the camera to be used for selfies? The Canon EOS M5 has a similar screen setup which is what gave me the idea. I know that wouldn't be terribly useful if mounted on a tripod or with the grip, but still might be useful.

To be greedy, I don't suppose that you have a version of this in Excel? Would be great to be able to hide columns to get the cameras I want to compare next to each other. I know I can just use Adam's comparison tool, but I'm an Excel wonk and your table is much more compact. :-)

I got that same email this morning announcing that AS OF TODAY the older cards were no longer going to be supported. The email referenced an end-of-life process begun in "mid 2015," but today's email was the first I had heard of it. I went back through my email but there were no prior notices of this action. I'm pretty pissed.

I'm in for one as well! Anyone looking for a pristine K-5? I'll be posting mine in the For Sale thread in a few days, providing all goes well.
Thanks, Borrelli, for the info on the International Warranty. Good to know.

The original Eye-Fi HOme Video 4 Gb card didn't always work correctly in my *ist-D, but my Eye-Fi Pro X2 8Gb works just fine in my K-5, no problems at all.

I didn't see where anyone suggested that you needed a faster card for your K10D, rather they said that the K-3 would benefit from the faster cards. I think you need to buy or borrow a fast SD card and go to your favorite camera store to conduct your own tests on a K-3 based on how you use the camera.

Although shutter noise wasn't even on my checklist when I bought my K-5, it has turned out to be my favorite "feature." I am amazed each and every time that I take a picture at just how quiet and effortless it feels. It especially comes in handy when taking pictures of my kids in stage performances, I turn off the rear display and the people in the row in front of me don't even know I'm taking pictures. Now, is that a sound reason to buy the K-5 over the K-30? Probably not, but it sure is something you'll appreciate once you have it!

Although I have been a Pentax owner for almost 40 years, when I bought my K-5, I bought the 18-135mm lens to go with it and I'm sure glad I did. I'm sure the 18-55mm is a good lens, especially for the price, but the 18-135 just blew me away. I bought it for the extra reach, but I love it because It's compact, quiet, and fast! I really hate using my screw-drive autofocus lenses now, they just seem so clunky. If you can afford it, go for the 18-135, you won't regret it.

There doesn't seem to be a link to the home page from the forum pages, the links all just go back to the root forum page.
Edit - of course, NOW when I click the home button it works, but it didn't work the first time I clicked it - honest!

Hi all -- I finally bit the bullet and replaced my trusty *ist DS with a shiny new K-5. Wow, what a great camera! I foolishly let my girlfriend use it to take some pictures at my daughter's play a few weeks ago and it was all I could do to pry it back out of her hands! (She's already decided that she NEEDS one too!)
On to my question. Does the Auto ISO function work in P mode? And if so, how? On my camera, I have to manually change the ISO when using P, is this the way it is supposed to work? If not, can I change it to Auto? I do have Auto ISO selected in the menu and I've tried various ranges (I have it set to 100-3200 at the moment).
Thanks in advance!
Doug

You can't go wrong with the Sandisk Extreme series, but they are a bit pricey. I've been using PQI Class 10 cards which you can pick up from Meritline pretty cheap and I've been very happy. As a matter of fact, I just received my new K-5 last night, and I just ordered a 16 Gb PQI card for it today (my 2 Gb card will only hold 44 images in Raw!)

I got one last year when I signed up for a year's storage on Picasa to use for taking pictures of items I'm selling on ebay. It was a real pain to take 4-5 pictures, take the card out of the camera, put it in the card reader, transfer the photos, etc. Using the Eye-Fi card, I take the pictures, they are immediately transferred to my computer and pulled into Picasa. Then I can apply some simple corrections and upload them online and link them into my ebay listings. It's pretty slick. For all other purposes, I rely on a regular SD card.

Just a clarification, it isn't a CMOS problem, it is a dust/contamination problem, which is a whole different issue.

There are probably hundreds of posts about the best AA rechargeable batteries to use with Pentax DSLR cameras, and the consensus is to use the Hybrid rechargeable batteries, such as:
Sanyo Eneloop
Uniross Hybrio
Rayovac Hybrid
AA Alkalines are for emergencies only. AA Lithiums work well, but are expensive -- they cost the same as a set of the hybrids. "Regular" AA rechargeables often don't work very well in the Pentax cameras -- it has something to do with the voltage drop under load. Stick with the Hybrids and you will be happy.
Best charger is one which can charge the cells individually -- I use a LaCross BC-900, but I don't know if you can get one in Sweden. Maha makes several good chargers as well. It's well worth paying $30-$40 to get a good charger.
I'm sure others will chime in. Do a search on AA Batteries and you will find lots of info.
