Yep! I'm using the K-30.
I'm stating that I am able to set my shutter speed to 1/200 when I use a flash. But of course, without any flash attached, my max sync speed is 1/180.

Hi again! Sorry it took so long as I had to find another flash to test. Anyway, tested with a Pentax 540 with the same result.
On the statements above:
1) The Metz 52 AF-1 has no issues from x-sync to HSS when mounted directly on the K30.
2) ALL shots above >1/200 syncs OK.
3)
i) Shots at any x-sync speed does not sync with the flash although it appears to fire
ii) Requires to shoot a second frame or more, in succession, for flash to sync, but only from second frame onwards.
Is it a sign of faulty units?
Hope that helps.

@Cactus, I did swap both transceivers, with the appropriate setting (TX/RX) between my Metz 52-AF1 and my Pentax K30 respectively.
Still the same results.
I've also tried to use alkaline batteries, since Eneloops only rated for 1.2V each, and still the same issue.
I'm able to utilize my Metz flash and all flashes contributes to the image at all shutter speed setting.
PS: Don't get me wrong, the flash still fires with the transceivers, but anything <1/200 results in no flash contribution to the image for the first frame. Seems to be slow?

@Cactus, any further advice for my issue?
In short,
1) I've tested all profiles with both triggers on-camera and on-flash, laboriously resetting them with every changes made.
2) The flash fires AND CONTRIBUTES to the image from 1/200 onwards.
3) Anything slower than 1/200, (e.g. 1/160), the flash fires but DOES NOT CONTRIBUTE to the image.
3) For shutter speed slower than 1/200, (e.g. 1/160), shutter needs to be fired at least twice simultaneously and then ONLY THE SECOND image will result in the flash contributing to the picture. That means I always have to fire at least twice to get a usable image with the second frame.
In conclusion, it is now a HSS ONLY trigger. Doesn't work for shutter speed slower than 1/200 (i.e. 1/160 and slower) without having to shoot simultaneously.

Yep!
Just found time to update both my V6iis to firmware 1.1.005. Still functioning like a HSS-only trigger.
Updated my Metz 52 AF-1 to the latest firmware 1.3.
Not that i know off as i bought them new in hope that it would be my go-to triggers, but alas!
V6ii able to detect both camera AND flash. :/
Guess i got dud units..

Yea... I sure hope so too! Although my experience has left me with a sour note. Just gonna blame it on the incompatibility with the Metz 52-AF1.
Nevertheless, gonna try update to this firmware and keep my finger crossed that my triggers are not "HSS only".. LoL!

Mine's always at the dimmest viewable setting at all times to save on battery as much as possible. LoL!
Don't bother looking at the screen for checking exposure. Just use it for a quick check on composition and focus accuracy.
For brightness, I always recommend to learn how to read the histogram.

Back to report!
And.....*drum rolls*..... Still failed! :'(
It's still acting like a HSS-only trigger... Faulty unit?

Ok, I'll give it a try later once I've knocked off and report.
May I clarify also, how about the receiver trigger? Set it to the Pentax/Auto Pentax Profile?
So in short,
TX: Auto
Rx: Pentax/Auto Pentax
Am I correct?

Nope, it does not do so automatically.
Even if I set it manually, the issue still remains.
Either I have to toggle burst shot where the first frame will not have any flash contribution although it does go off, or toggle into single shot mode, where I have to quickly take a couple of shots at least as the first frame will not have any flash contribution at all. LoL!
It is as if my flash is triggered off too slowly for every first frame. :/
Mounting the flash directly onto my hotshoe don't seem to have this issue.
Perhaps the trigger, either the transmitter or receiver, in non-HSS speed, is lagging for every first frame?

I could set the flash to PTTL HSS mode whilst mounted on the trigger. And it works so long as my shutter is in HSS zone (>160). Anything slower, it triggers the flash but the resulting image does not show flash contributing to the exposure.
Only way it does is when I quickly trip the shutter; second frame onwards, or i simply just set my shutter to burst mode.
I'm using a K30 btw.

It doesn't automatically switch modes. Tried PTTL, PTTL HSS, and even Manual, to no avail. I guess it's luck.. :/
Thanks anyway! Maybe I'll try rollback to previous firmwares, if it's possible. That's the only thing left that I have yet to do.

Sadly, I did try... But anything more than the "Off" value, which I believe is "0" delay, is much slower.. It seems that the flash is firing too slow at anything within Max Sync Speed (<1/180)..
I've tried factory resetting both, and even messed around with all possible permutations between the Tx and Rx to no avail.. LoL!
Seems like it's a dud with the Metz 52.. :/

Oh, dumb me.. Forgot to state my flash model.
Sorry! I'm using the Metz 52-af 1.. And yea.. I've upgraded the firmware to 1.1.004.
And yes, I've set everything to Pentax, and flash profile to Pentax Auto.
Guess it don't work as wonderfully with the Metz 52?

Hmm... Playing around with my V6ii triggers, it seems that it only works for HSS.. The flash fires off in normal sync speed (<1/200) but my photo still turns out dark as if the flash was delayed? Or too soon?
PS: Ok, after blasting around, it seems that anything slower than HSS zone (<1/200), my first 2 frames are always dark as if there are no flash although i can actually see the flash firing off.
And this also requires me to shoot in continuous burst.
If i shoot and pause, for 10 frames, it will all be dark, as if no flash contribution although I see the flash firing off..
Faulty unit? Guess my V6ii is just a HSS only trigger.. WtH....

Am I the only one excited or am I missing something?
Does the electronic shutter during live view means that user won't be limited by small aperture while shooting outdoors with flash?!
I meant sync speed still 1/180?
Edit: Nvm... Got too excited but perhaps max sync speed is still 1/180.. LoL!

If i'm reading your question correctly, you are wondering how to have soft lighting, as in those portraits that are shown with the light source close to the subject, but in a much wider shot right?
Simple, more flash sources from different angles, and at different light ratios..... :)
Place more light sources at different angles/spots/locations with different light ratios where you need to lighten up the shadows...
PS: I think you are "stuck" with the mentality of shooting with just 1 light location.

My honest take?
If you can't accept it, don't and just walk away.. No offense but what's the point of this post to begin with?
Similarly, why do people pay such a high price for a certain sports shoes when it's an open secret that the cost price to produce one is like US$1/pair because it's by cheap labour in a 3rd world country?
Why does that brand charge so much more when it's already an open secret?
From your given scenario in assessing that the pro photog is over-charging, what if you flip the coin and charge much lower in comparison to yours? Will there be complaints about such people spoiling their own market? (it's already happening...)
There's no end to it..
To be honest my friend, everybody is an artist in their own right and everybody leads their life in their own way.
Live and let go... Just walk away if it doesn't suit you. Similarly like how I don't stand in front of the Hermes boutique and cry foul when they imprinted their brand name on a normal "Alibaba" bag and relabel it as the coolest shopping bag for the upmarket crowd.
