Buying Sigma 35mm or switching systems?

Yeah you're right. Pentax has always been outstanding in streetphotography with their tiny lenses. That's really a benefit in comparison with photographing strangers with a big fast lens.
However, streetphotography will only be a small part of what I do.

Buying Sigma 35mm or switching systems?

Thanks Zapp ;)

I am leaning more toward the Nikon D600 right now. It's still pretty expensive though. When I sell all my lenses and K5 body I still have to add an additional 150EUR to get a new D600 body.

Maybe I start out with a Nikon 50mm f1.8G its just 170EUR and still offers keen results on FF, amazing price/performance.

Still is it worth to trade all my gear for a Nikon D600 body?

Ah there really is one!

Only drawback is its Manual focus only. Unlike most older users who used the Pentax MX etc. I am not used to manual focusing and at F1.4 that can be a pain without a good prism. Besides its quite expensive as well. In The Netherlands it is selling for 660 Euro. Just 200 Euros cheaper than the Sigma 35mm. Me personally really value AF so in that regard the Samyang is just not worth it. Thanks though, would otherwise be a perfect solution :)

Thanks for the plenty replies everyone! Really appreciating it.

Maybe Adam has a point here. It could be that I just like the pictures of the 35mm (equivalent to like 24mm on Crop) more, as they are a bit more interesting. I'm planning for street photography as well so a wider FOV forces you to get more into the scene. But in that case I need a fast 24mm lens, but does it exist? I really need the F1.4/F1.8 for more than just Bokeh. I do a lot of indoor (dimmed light) shots as well.

However, if I'm right, there really is a difference in DOF Bob, in a certain perspective at least. As 35mm is just a wider you have to move closer to the subject (for the same frame) and thus the DOF will be smaller and thus there will be more Bokeh. Moreover, it's not that I want to isolate an object completely in a way the background is completely blurred. It's just really nice to have that slight "blurrines" through a picture shot with a wider FOV. It really let that picture live.

So I could get an 24mm F1.4 (doubt it exist?). But if I'm right the DOF will be bigger than with a 35mm F1.4. This picture is making it pretty clear: LINK

@ adam: I could of course get the lens for my K5 and use it later on a future Pentax FF. But is it already sure they will make a FF anytime soon, if ever?

Hi fellow Pentaxians,

I'm really struggling with some thoughts and I thought maybe you guys can help me think straight.

The thing is: I'm planning to buy new Siggy 35mm F1.4 glass. From the pictures I have seen I really really start to like that lens. BUT, I like the photo's made on a FF body more as for the shallower depth of field. Now I'm fine investing in gear supplementing my K-5, but this kind of glass really presses on my wallet. It's fine though if such a lens is really a life time thing. But as I said, I like the shallower depth of field on a Full Frame camera. So before I am going to invest in such an expensive piece of glass I want to make sure that I can use it on my future FF. If I'm interpreting the FF rumors correctly however I'm not really sure Pentax will deliver a FF anytime soon. Every rumor about a certain date seems a joke. What do you guys think?

If it's not all that certain that Pentax will make a FF anytime soon, is it wiser to switch systems? For example to the Nikon D600?

Maybe it's worth mentioning my current gear:

- Pentax K5
- Pentax 40mm f2.8 ltd
- Tamron 17-50
- Pentax 18-135
- SMC-A 50mm f1.7

Looking forward to your thoughts!:)

Ok got the answere! For people with the same problem:

Put the flash in S2 mode. Turn of the 'Wireless Flash' setting in custom menu. Use normal flash (no wireless flash) and it will work! :)

Hi All,

Since 4 days I'm a proud owner of a Pentax K5. I want to use my Yongnuo YN560II as a Wireless (optical) Slave. Now, I don't get my K5 and speedlite working with each other. With my build-in flash popped up in Wireless mode; wireless flash settings on and Yongnuo on S1 or S2. Nothing works!

The YN560 does pop though. But to late or to early. Making a photo of the speedlight makes it pop but on the photo the speedlight is of. Who knows what to do??

Thanks!!:)

Problem is that I don't know at what focal lengths I'm going to shoot yet. I've never owned a SLR myself.. At this moment I don't have plans to shoot animals or something like it. I think I won't need the 300mm, but I think I need more then 50mm.. I like the change in perspective of the background when zoomed in on a subject (background gets blown up/bigger). Furthermore I really love small DOF, so for that the Tamron is great.

For some reasons I don't like the 18-135 shots I've seen so far. Don't take me wrong, technically the shots are fine but they seem somewhat 2-dimensional.

As Alphanerd is suggesting I could better go for the package I could grow with at produces good quality images. I will probably pick up the DA18-55 and later on the 17-50 f2.8.

Thanks guys!

Hi!

At July 5th I can finally buy me new K5 :) Unfortunately I'm still (for about 7 months) stuck at what lens to buy. My budget for lenses is approximately <400 euro's. The race is between the following lens combinations:
  1. DA 18-50mm (20€) + DA 55-300 (300€)

  2. Tamron 17-50 F2.8 (300€) + DA 18-55 (because it's so cheap and has WR)

  3. DA 18-135 (350€)

I already have a SMC-M 50mm/1.7 + SMC-M 28mm/2.8 + SMC-A 50mm/1.7.

What should I do? Thanks!!:)

Nice comparison shots! I have noticed the color of the 18-135 is much nicer! But you're right, no much difference in sharpness here.. Although in my previous post I was talking about the 55-300 compared with the 50-200.

If you find that it's easier to use the 18-135 you'll be happy you bought the 18-135 I guess. If you don't use the 50-200 anymore just sell it :) If you want to zoom further you could go for the DA 50-300, much better optics!

Edit:

@ Karelson: Very nice sky indeed!

@ Zorglub: Nice shots. I have noticed that there are many 'macro-like' shots which are looking awesome. The 18-135 really excels here..

Recently I opened a thread about a problem with my 50mm/1.7. Although it's not the same problem you have, people referred to 'Lens Separation'. I did an extensive research on the internet and you're description really matches the symptoms of lens separation. Lens Separation is when two cemented elements begin to separate:

''What does it look like? Like a patch of oil when the sunlight hits it. There will be an iridescent rainbow colored area, usually along the edges. The shape varies, but it's typically crescent or wave-like.''

Just my 2 cents

Seems like that's exactly the element that is 'dirty/bubbled/dusted' at my 28mm lens! Hmm, interesting.

@ Bratt: I don't think it is fungus though. The lenses are in the same bag in the same place for more than 25 years so why should the fungus come up now and not earlier? Dust is possible but I can't see it without a LED light, that's strange...

Thanks for all the replies!:) Never heard of it though. But good to know anyway! I will give it a try when I have my K5 and see if its still usable. Guess that's the only way.

A quick search on the internet describes it as: 'Like a patch of oil when the sunlight hits it. There will be an iridescent rainbow colored area, usually along the edges. The shape varies, but it's typically crescent or wave-like.' That's not exactly the case here though, or are there just different kinds of lens seperation?

I'm wondering what the difference is as well! Do you have those similar pics with Oil vaporization? Thanks!

While inspecting two old SMC M lenses from my father (28mm/2.8 & 50mm/1.7) I noticed countless extreme small dust particles, or tiny air-bubbles on one element of both lenses. It is only noticeable when I use a bright LED light on it. As I don't have my K5 yet I can't test it out, but to me both lenses are looking pretty good without using the LED.

Any thoughts what it could be and if they're still usable?

PS. brown and other colored spot are just reflections of course.

@Philbaum: thanks for the info! I think you're right. I will analyse it later this week, you'll hear from me!

@ Atekant: a PERFECT description of my 'problem' with this lens. I just can't figur out what I don't like about it. But I think its that 2-dimensional thing you're talking about. Problem for me is that I don't know what focal lengths I will need..... Does the extra 20mm make that much of a difference?

@Philbaum: The da 17-70 is pretty nice as well! But the sdm failure.. Well there are good stories and bad stories. Is it improved over the years? What about the sigma? Is the DA better in IQ as well? 16-85 will be amazing as a Da*. But probably will not be on the market for at least a year I guess.

Anymore thoughts?:)

Whoo, nice response! :)

@ Norm: Beautifull photo, nice contrast and composition! Thumbs up.

@ Lightbulb&Jamiep: Nice colors as well! And that photo of both the kids, tack sharp!

@Audiobomber: That photo on the 135 mm end is still pretty sharp after hearing al the horor stories about it! Nice to know..

@ Boredomfestival: Tack sharp pictures as well, especially the one with the drop. The rest are all roots from plants or am I wrong?

PS. Maybe this thread should me relocated to the sample part than?

Anyway any more photos?:)

Hi all!

Within 2 months I'm buying my new K5! I would really love to be convinced of the 18-135 because of its lovely versatility, but I can't find more than a few real good photo's made with it (for example if you compare this with the Flickr group of the Tammy 17-50 which is also a possibility).

Soo, if you guys would be so kind to post al you're awesome 18-135 shots here I would be most grateful:)

@ Daveholms: So you will choose for the 18-135 for its versatility, instead of tamron's IQ?

@ Jezza: I do prefer at least one zoom lens at first. Maybe later I will look at some nice primes :)

@Pinholecam: That's a pretty good idea actually! Maybe I will give it a try, nothing to lose.. Thanks!!

Anybody else an opinion on this issue? :)
