Legacy lenses on new digital FF

I just happened upon an interesting pair of blog posts regarding using lenses on cameras other than what they were designed originally designed to be paired with. It appears that basically we can count on our Legacy FF lenses designed for film to be a bit less than optimal than NEW FF lenses designed for digital sensors due to the glass and filters placed in front of the sensor.

I know personally I'm not going to freak out about it, but it is something to ponder and consider as we break out all the old glass and start pixel peeping when the great and grand FF arrives.

It also makes me wonder about third party lenses i.e. Sigma, Tamron that apply one lens design across different mounts.

When I used to cover events as a videographer we knew who was new by glancing their cameras, tripods and other gear. The battle scars were badges of honor. If we needed something or had a question, wanted the inside gossip we knew the guys with the marks and scratches would most likely to know what's going down.

Once when I was shooting a series of training videos for a company in a big refinery and all the refinery personnel would tell me things and ignore the producer who was " in charge" . The producer finally got a little peeved and asked why they kept addressing me since I was just "the camera guy". The escort told him it was because of my steel toes. Mine were a decade old and nicked, stained and scratched, his were brand spanking new. They knew he'd never been in a plant or refinery. Mine were so worn they surmised I'd been around enough and they didn't have to dumb down what they were saying or explain why we had to leave our expensive gear and run like hell when certain alarms went off.

I'd say yes to the movie button ... seems to be the best answer ... Red record tally light around the button so the operator knows when they are "rolling"

Shadows and Detail: A love letter to the Pentax 645z | Philip Bloom

"This is less a review and much more a collection of my thoughts and feelings about this utterly magnificent camera. I am far from an expert on reviewing a camera’s ability to take stills – I will leave that to the pros. My speciality is of course video cameras, moving images, but this camera is too special to me to not do a post on."

seems he likes it .....

if the K3 is finally fully manual in video mode, it may be the reason Samyang finally decided to release their Cine lenses in K mount

I mostly shot news and sports where the camera moved a lot and the lighting conditions changed and tweaking the iris while shooting was standard because unlike a RAW still you really could not "fix it in post". Even now since the DSLRs, other than the cameras from Black magic, shoot in compressed formats teaking exposure in post is a very iffy proposition. The Samyang cine lenses remove the clicks in their aperture rings to allow smooth stepless aperture adjustments to nail the exposure. They also have consistant rotation direction and amount of turn for focusing across the line, I think its a 160 degrees, which allows more fine adjustment than the short throw AF stills lenses, which are optimized for quick AF response by the camera body. They also have a uniform front filter ring size and dampend focus reistance unlike modern AF stills lenses.

You can lock the Pentax cameras but you cannot be sure what shutter your actually set at. To lock it down you basially have to fix a certain lighting condiditon on a gray card lock the exposure and then start recording .......... and do this with each and every time you roll to get consistand shutter speeds.. There are some links on the net where someone has created a chart after testing what the EV is that the Pentaxs run to get a true filmic shutter speed if you want to go through the hoops. The canons have full manual and don't have to do this.

Not every junior Speilberg or Bay who shoots with a canon DSLR actually knows what their doing but the ones who do steer away from pentax for this reason. The effect trickles down and the less sophisticated just hear Pentax is not suitible for pro video work and takes it at gospel with out even knowint the reason why. plus things like lens selection, avaiablity and support. Canon actually opened up a pro support center in LA just to suppor the cinema crowd .... not sure Pentax even has a pro support network for their stills users.

The problem with disabling the HDMI port on the camera during record is a big deal.On most narrative style, commercial, corporate type shoots the video of what is being recorded is fed to extrenal monitos for the director and others in the crew to view as the shot happens. this is refered to as the "video village" With the Pentax this imortant practice on the set is disabled.

Like others have said the images from the pentax are just as colorful and sharp as the others, but the other details that are important to the pro users to ensure they get consistant quality footage are missing in the Pentax cameras for the time being.

"FULL" manual is where the user sets the camera to movie mode, then selects an ISO, a shutter speed and an aperture and press record AND not have the camera override or change any setting when recording.

the Pentaxes will let you set aperture but unless you do exposure lock it can select different shutter speeds as it see fit.

there are several discussions on this concept. here is one that discusses the work arounds
Trick for 'manual' video mode in K5.. do they work or not??: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

most of the "pro" filmaker type users that I work and interact with, choose the canons to shoot cinema style Hollywood looking footage set their cameras to 1/50, 1/48, or 1/60 of a second to mimic the motion look of a cine camera with a 180degree shutter shooting at 25 or 24 or 30 fps. They select the ISO for the best dynamic range and image quality and then set the aperture for the DOF look they want or the sharpness they want and leave nothing to chance. Full Manual control.

With the way Pentax implements what it calls manual, you cannot truly set the shutter speed in video mode before recording and can not adjust the aperture on full auto lenses once recording has begun. If you try to use manual lenses with manual apertures the camera will shift shutter speed when changing apertures when recording.

Basically unless you really want to jump through hoops and do work arounds when you shoot video you are shooting in quasi program mode even under the M setting. Which is taking chance with the camera shifting a setting during recording.

the chip is good, the SR is ok, the codec is adequate. the lenses are great but the problem is in the useability on a set.

The Pentaxs still have no FULL manual control in video modes, makes it hard to set up and start recording without having to jump thru exposure lock hoops and tweak during recording.
The Pentaxs cripple the HDMI output during recording and prevents sending the image to larger external monitors for focus and composition confirmation and send to the video village for the rest on the set to see.

"IMO the K3 matches what the canons can do. It's only because of the less than ideal SR that some people are making it sound like a joke for video."

"those are two really big deals to the guys who choose the canons for pro video work .... aside from the general canikon bias of the genral public."

What kind of lights would mess up K-3 WB this much?

Most "budget"gymnasiums especially high school and community have sodium vapor lights. They have a ballast like fluorescent lights and to the human eye / mind appear to be continuous light with no variance in brightness and color. When photographed or videotaped they will cause strange issues as the cycle of the lights mix with the shutter speed in cycles. I used to tape HS sports and most of the time it was not an issue but when we shortened the shutter speeds in anticipation of trying to get better slowmo things got wonky. When you fast forwarded thru the footage you could see the brightness pulse and the WB cycle.

I say "budget" to separate from the high end college and pro arenas that use lighting designed to be more compatible with televising their games.

If Kodak get a judgment in their favor in one case, then it's on the record and can be used as evidence or leverage in other cases over the same issues.

Having been one of those camera guys that shot ENG style and local spots with a crew of me and a Reporter/Producer or me and a Producer/salesperson ..... I can honestly say, I really don't know a single one out of the dozens that speak to almost daily that would ever trust auto focus ..... There's too many ways it will screw up in ways that are too noticeable. In my conversations I have, they HATE the modern fly by wire lenses of the mid size camcorders and proper ENG shoulder cameras still don't have AF.

The size of the crew has little or nothing to do with focusing that's all on the camera guy . Proper technique and shot selection pretty much eliminate any need for AF.

the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema for $995 USD is the least expensive "out of the box" RAW video camera. the other DSLR require hacks

Blackmagic Design: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera

shoots a lossless 13 stop DR CinemaDNG RAW codec onto SDXC and SDHC cards. 1920x1080 up to 30p

it is a super 16 sensor and not a SLR, but once a SLR is in live view its not a SLR any more. Some of us had hopes that Ricoh pulled a fast one on everybody and made the K3 APSC with RAW "out of the box"....... better luck next time

The only pro that need longer than 20 min are event videographers who do weddings, performances and meetings. Other types of "pros" those who shoot commercials, training, corporates, narrative etc usually only record short sections at a time that are edited into longer pieces later on. So a dslr could be viable option for them. So far no dslr from any mfg has been a good choice for long recording times mostly due to overheating issues and poor audio work flow.

The k01 will overheat -- I've done it along with the k7, 5dii, 7d and a few others

also the sensor @ 6016x4000 could do 4k UHD ??? ... may need to check the data rates to see of that is possible ..

hhhhhmmm what other odd ball thories we could throw out there

with traditional video files they are like JPEG all of the color informmation and exposure are baked in to the file and even moderate changes are difficult to pull off sucessfully. RAW video like RAW photo has been the preferred working space for exposure and color post processing and has been on of the holy gails for us video guys for a while along with sensors larger than 110 film size.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the RAW option in video quality

Raw and uncompressed are Two different things. Raw is the output of the chips with out color and exposure information processed and baked into the storage file. popular RAW cinema cameras still employ data compression to their RAW files. RED Code is used by RED is actually a Lossy compression based on JPEG and stores RAW image infomrmation.

Not saying what the K3 might use but Raw moving video. but RAW does not have to be UNcompressed video. two different things

After speaking with one of the Adobe product guys in high up in the Premiere it seems they were rather dismayed about BMC's adoption of the cinemaDNG for their cameras and Adobe had interneraly halted development and support for the format. I dont know what they were planning as an alterneative, but he said they were not aware of BMC deccesion to use the format untill after it was announced.

But sometimes formats take on a life of their own .....

"BUt I see no take up of this within Consumer propducts" .... several places in the leaked literature refers to "professional" video recording formats.

In the long run they will drop the mirror, like in audio and video they dropped tape, in photo they dropped film. The cost of making and maintaining factories to make complicated precession mechanical assemblies is becoming prohibitive. It's far easier to source an LCD panel for an evf already to day but the market will not currently accept it. But in the future there will be a tipping point or event that will force the change. When that will be is any ones guess but I m willing to guess before the end of the decade it will be hard to find mass produced consumer cameras with actuated mirrors and physical shutters
