I was noticing that someone else on here is looking for a similar lens. I have an old Tamron 70-200 f/2.8, which I also dropped. I wonder if it is even worth attempting repairs?

That one won't autofocus, and kind of grinds when zooming...

I will contact my machine shop, and ask about it. He needs better images, preferably of an unbroken one, so I guess I'll see if there are some online.

And I guess I'm sold on the screwdrivers lol

Thanks, I'll try some of those, for the replacement part. Knowing what it's called helps a lot.

I haven't found any in Canada, except the ones who will ship it on to Pentax for you. Are there independent shops in Canada?

I'll have to look into what 'JIS' is and take another look at the rigging. Thanks for the hint.

Hey guys, I got a beautiful Pentax 70-200 f/2.8 for my new K-1, and pretty much immediately hurled it at the skeleton of the earth.

So the handle broke off, and it seems it cannot be user-replaced. Sending it out would be quite costly, so I thought I would ask around here, and see if anyone had corrected a problem like this for themselves.

(pics related)

My mechanical skills are pretty rudimentary, but I've considered using a twist drill to make some small holes in the broken faces, then applying epoxy. That is dissatisfying a bit, because this might be exactly where it was made to shear, and strengthening it might cause increased stress on another part. Not to mention, drilling on a lens like this could create a whole bunch of other problems. For example, I don't yet know how to eliminate the possibility of metal filings finding their way in to the lens. The only measure I can think is to do the drilling by hand with a pin vise, and carefully removing metal filings as they are created.

Anyway, glad to hear more opinions on it.

I enjoy AvE, thought it should be said that the best ones are NSFW

Funnest are new tool teardowns, but he has some shockingly good analysis of crane collapses. Canadian chap with a face for radio.

I forgot to say something significant I liked about my f150. It started years before I got it.

There was a young mechanic living in my neighbourhood, who was looking for side work. I commissioned him to do some work on my old ranger, and he layed in the snow changing parts, diagnosing problems and kept it running just dandy. The agreement I made was that he bill in hours, not dollars, and use the book hours as a baseline. When I payed him the (Ford) shop rate, based on the book hours, he suggested it was too much, because he was working outside. I retorted that it should cost more, since he was working outside, and that I was getting a bargain.

It's 20 years later now, and I bought the truck from the dealership he now works at. As shop foreman. When I bring in my truck for its warranty service, or even now that the extended warranty is past, I get amazingly good service that I trust as much as I've ever trusted him.

So invest in your mechanics and other tradesmen. If you can't do it, it IS worth paying smartly for.

I have a small grey, black and white card on a lanyard. Never used them to set grey point. Don't know if I would. I keep it around though.

What's your favourite road trip?

Where do YOU like to drive?

For me, it's a trip from the NWT south to northern Alberta. The target is usually a family we love there, and the trip takes about 18 hours, driven straight through. (approximately 1600kms)

Last summer, I took my new dog along, to see how she did with road trips. She was a champ. Did her business quickly, and got right back in to the truck. We made the trip in good time, and she really proved herself good road trip company. We got back after a week, and our city was evacuated, so we did it all again pretty much immediatly.

Lots of animals, lots of music and podcasts, and I really enjoy travelling with my sweetheart (though on the second trip, we were in two vehicles, so communication only by radio)

Another 'improvement' is to 4wd. I understand that the new Fords will, upon detecting a traction loss, shift automatically to 4 wheel drive, without the driver having to do anything.

Heck, mine has a button on the dash. No hubs to lock, to shifter on the floor. Even the diff locker is electronic.

I guess I only related my daily driver (the f150)

In addition, we have a Ford Escape, 18' boat, pontoon boat, large canoe, Honda Jazz (49cc bike) 3 bicycles and one would think, with all that, we wouldn't need so many running shoes.

Glad they don't count as vehicles. I would have to report the three pairs in current service, and backups, plus old faves I just don't want to discard.

Well, I have some of those teeny soft-boxes, which lay unused in my kit. Also have protective UV filters on the front of a couple of my lenses (not sure why those are not favoured anymore)

What came up for me though, was a 500mm f8 lens that doesn't do as good a job as a fast 50 with cropping.

Oh well, live and learn! (anyone want a cheap 500mm kmount off-brand boat-anchor?)
