I started this idea/project in 2020, as an extension of a series I named fruits of despairi.
Fascinated by Victorian Natural History illustrations, I started to try emulate style and feeling
of these illustrations.
I place the subjects on a large LED light and then I balance backlight with flash. When the subject
is backlit with a more powerful light than the flash(es), it shows its translucíd parts. Should the
flash overpower the LED, the subject appears opaque .
If you are a bit anal retentive, you can establish the light ratio to make color images look like watercolors
and B&W like pencil drawings.
This photo was one los my first attempts

Sounds like the gear problem. Where the cycle gets stuck depends on in which sequence that the gear started to slip. The most common failure is with the mirror up. The motor running constantly is a good indication as the gear just slips on the shaft without doing any work.
The problem with sending it out for repairs is the availability of parts. In the US the replacement motor with metal gear is no longer available. You can buy a compatible gear and any competent camera repair shop could replace it for you. kkpmo - Zahnrad / Trieb M0.25 / 13 Zähne
Change the options to 1.5mm shaft opening, 2.0 mm width and material to brass. Or find some other source or someone who can machine the gear from the above specifications.

Yes, same as MZ-6 released in 2001, has black plastic gear as shown in the above photo. These motors are taken out from failed MZ cameras. The plastic gear is not melted, just split at the center hole and can no longer hold on to the motor shaft. I have not seen any melted plastic gear but it is possible. If the gear splits in the middle of a cycle, the motor will continue running at 15K rpm if the camera is not immediately turned off, the friction between motor shaft and the pinion would generate sufficient heat to melt the plastic. Removing the bottom cover of the camera, you can easily see the mirror motor and the gear. If it is stamped: "PENTAX CORPORATION Made in Japan", most likely you'll have brass gear. The other two motors (one for focusing, another for transport film) are equipped with brass gears. I don't know why Pentax engineers would choose plastic gear for the mirror motor. The gear is 3.75mm in diameter; the center core area is very thin and would not be adequate to take the torque for flipping the mirror. I've opened two MZ-60, both have brass gear and stamped "PENTAX CORPORATION Assembled in Philippine". So when you are in the market for a MZ camera, look for the marking shown in the photo below. If it is stamped "ASAHI OPT. CO. LTD.", you will have to remove the bottom cover to see if the mirror motor gear has been replaced or not. If it is not, don't buy it.

And I see the album links are now dead. I'd fix them, but I guess the forum doesn't allow posts to be edited after a certain age? Anyway the work is currently documented at the links below (photos and descriptions intact, but the original flickr mouseover image notes are gone, which makes some of the instructions harder to follow): Mirror motor gear Pop up flash |

This photo was taken Sunday 11. October by the Lake Jonsvatnet near Trondheim, Norway. This morning there was thick fog covering much of the Trondheim area, and there was almost no wind. The fog/mist had partly broken up many places, allowing sunlight to shine through. So the conditions were ideal for some autumnal photography.

According to the 2015 booklet "Jumpers Report" by Otis Squirrel (Available on E-Bay for $12....free shipping) very few Jumpers actually jump ship.
A few excerpts from his report shed more light on this frequent phenomena we see all too often... (Posted here with permission from Otis) Genuine Jumpers
".......most genuine Jumpers are top notch shooters and jump for a specific need. Their skill level is usually much higher than average and their specific need is not met by their current gear. We seldom hear from them as they jump, they are not trying to gain attention or seek sympathy for poor abilities, because they are highly talented and need no sympathy or approval of other shooters. They go about their jump quietly, just as they conduct their shooting experience, letting their work do the talking. They have no need to bash particular brands or equipment, they are smart enough to know that there are plenty of choices for what they seek to obtain in their field of shooting." Wanna Be Jumpers
"......these are the ones we see most often. They are seeking attention and rallying the crowd to "save them" from....themselves! Most often they are low skilled shooters that can't get the results they see from others using the same gear, and blame their equipment. They will find any weakness in the line of equipment they are using and magnify it as if it is holding them back from being the Pro they think they can be. They are easy to spot......often a "wanna be jumper" will pick an area where his brand is the weakest and attack at that point. For example, he (I use "he" because it is very rare to see a female "wanna-be-jumper"...they are just too smart to fall into this pit of foolishness!) will point to the lack of Long Glass available, yet when his work is researched, it is found that his longest glass is a 100mm Macro lens and he has never shot any wildlife in his entire life! Still....he will find a weak link and magnify it for his own benefit of gaining sympathy and gathering a crowd to "save him". ":(
Otis is constantly on the lookout for any Wanna-Be-Jumpers that actually make the jump. He loves to follow them after their jump and see them go SPLAT! It makes wonderful bedtime stories for the little blind orphan squirrels. I often hear them out in the Woods of Otis at night laughing their little hinies off...and know immediately that Otis has found another jumper that went SPLAT!

I checked these 2 lenses listed on slrgear.com, and wow, the 70-200 and the FE 55 f1.8 are extremely high quality. Which is gratifying, because i bought the 70-200 F4 from Keh for $1000 as "Bargain" rated. Checked it out handholding only, and I couldn't find any decentering or sharpness issues. And distance shots were excellent. The 55 f1.8 is on my to-buy list. Meanwhile this is a shot i took with the Pentax M 135 f3.5 lens. Its been cropped by about 1/3. For lightweight travel, these older lenses have a lot to offer. The Sony 55 f1.8 i would use for portraits.

I saw this big tree, possibly a bigleaf maple, at the end of my walk around Deer Lake in Burnaby. I wanted to capture the dark massive limbs and trunk of this tree set against the heavy fall foliage. Then came a muscular dog fetching a big stick. Had a chance to take about six photos with this one clearly showing the stick in the dog's mouth.
Pixel-wise this photo is 99.9 percent about the tree or trees. But whenever I look at it, my eyes just go back to the dog again and again. So is the subject the dog? Or is it just the opening act to the main act, which is the tree.

My friend has most of the FE lenses, the only one he was dissatisfied with was the 16-70 and has returned that - might have a bad copy. He has very high praise for the FE macro, the 70-200 and the FE 55 and the 16-35 for that matter. I installed those 4 on my camera and frankly all 4 are ones to drool over - and i did plenty of that. The 70-200 weighs 840gms, the 90 macro only 600gms, so its markedly lighter.
I got this thing in the mail from Keh about sales prices during Labor Day. And 10% off Bargain rated lenses. So i found this Bargain rated FE 70-200 F4 Sony lens for 1079. and i got 10% off that. After thinking about it, i figured it was a stupid thing to buy. I expected that i would be returning it. However, just got it this evening, its in excellent shape except missing original box and instructions. Did i every get lucky. 180 day warranty. All i can say is: terrific company to deal with :)

The problem with random photos, be they good or bad, is that they don't really say much about the gear and more about the photographer.

I was surprised by this rare phenomenon called "winter halo" so I grabbed my Pentax and took the shot. The explanation that I found is that tiny particles of ice in atmosphere reflect the full moon light and form the halo around the moon.
