Pentax 40mm XS... shutter blades issue

If you've never taken a lens apart and successfully put it back together, there is always a chance to ruin the lens.

That being said, this is not a complicated lens - is a prime (primes are usually much simpler to work on). If you are patient and go slow and take your time, is not that complicated.
This one is even simpler since it doesn't has any aperture stop ring.

Take lots of pictures and be careful with those aperture blades.

Update... update...

So today I took it again apart and spent more time on it and re-checked everything. I am now more and more convinced that the main cause of the issue is loose front ring of the lens. Because of the quick movements of the blades (when mounted on camera), if the two half parts that guides and sandwich the aperture blades into place are even a hair loose, the blades will go flying off the tracks...

Anyway, a few pictures of the whole thing - leaving them here for future, if anyone might end up with same issue and needs some reference...

How the blades were inside before I opened it the first time (after I removed the core).
Everything in this, except the aperture blades, screws and front ring is plastic.

Aperture blades were just falling off before I removed the front ring...

The two guides and the mess between them - you can see the blade that was bent on the right side:

Putting things back together...

Inner core in place, back view:

Inner core in place, front view:

Everything back together - I have added 2 drops of shellac at the base of the threads. Hopefully this will keep the ring in place and it won't loosen over time...

Anyway, everything seems to work for now... hopefully will stay like that otherwise I am giving up on them :D.

As an update on this...

I managed to open up the lens and have a look at the blades.
One of them was a little bent and I had to work on it to get it as straight as possible - I guess it got bent while was in use and it came off the grooves. I then manged to assemble the blades back in place and they worked... for a little while... and then they came apart again after using the lens for a couple of tests.

I honestly have no idea why...

What I have noticed... the "helicoid" is plastic... the two halfs that are guiding the aperture blades are plastic... and there is no trace of some sort of grease or oil to help with friction over time... not sure if that is normal or not, but it seems odd that there is nothing to help with minimizing the wear down. Plastic on plastic parts rubbing against each other.

My only guess is that the plastic that is used in the key areas has loosen up, or wear down a little bit, just enough to allow for the blades to jump off the groves. Or heat/cold have affected them and tolerances are bigger now. There seems to be a little bit of play, no matter how hard you try to tighten that front ring - obviously not going overboard and stripping the plastic threads.

If the front ring is not tight enough or comes loose over time (again, it screws into a plastic sleeve basically), the blades will come off the grooves for sure. That is what keeps the guides for the apprture blades in place, tight against each other!!!
So, when you work on these lens, pay attention when you remove that front ring.

Quite disappointed with the construction of these lens :hmm:.

Does anyone know if the inside of the limited lens are the same? Or they are actually using metal parts for the blade grooves and helicoid?

I have the entire green ring collection... worried eventually they will have the same fate .

Yep, thanks - I have worked on cameras and some lenses before... managed to gather some tools over the years.
I'll admit though, I usually have stayed away from the aperture blades and never actually taken them apart... or put them back together.
It will be an interesting challenge :).

Unfortunately, I am not - but thank you very kindly for offering to have a look at it :).
I'm located in Canada.

I know that, but these things usually are well assembled, they don't just come apart because you pick it up... if is a "normal" thing, then I strongly suggest anyone to not buy this thing.

Anyway, since no one else has replied I assumed is not a normal thing for these lens, and I ended up with a bad copy that just failed... it was too depressed and lonely on that shelf and it came apart... literally :D.
Won't bother to fix it since most probably the cost for fixing it is higher than a new copy... and at this point I lost my trust in them and I'd rather get something else anyway.

Sounds like a man to my heart... I would of had a similar reaction.

Ouch... I hope that little "wtf moment" ended with just a scare and nothing serios

True, no disagreement there, things happen as they say... if I'm just the unlucky one with getting a poorly assembled copy, I can accept that.

Is just that to me was really, really puzzling... still is since I can't think of any time in their life when they even took a tumble. I am very careful with my gear.

"Anywho", I will chuck it in the mystery bin I guess.
In the end I can always use it "wide opened" :D... and call it the bokeh lens.

I'll probably open it up and at least see what might of happened... but I wanted to see first if this is something that might of happened to at least another person... or maybe if there is some common issues with this lens that I am not aware of. Not worth to waste the money on fixing something that decides to break itself apart just sitting :D.

As to get another one, I have doubts in trusting another copy... I have the 40mm limited so I will be using that more often I guess.

Again... the lens were sitting on a shelf and last time I used them were working just fine. And they never got to fly anywhere or be in contact with anything. Literally, the lens did not move from the same spot I personally "gingerly placed" them there.

I appreciate the time you took to answer, but your explanation just doesn't fit or makes sense in my case. If "vibration" would of been an issue, at least one or two more out of the 15 lenses I have on that shelf will end up with similar issues.

Yes, you are correct, they are aperture blades... not sure why I said shutter... thanks for the catch.

They are not connected to anything, the lever on the back is not moving them any longer. It seems like they magically disconnected them self :/. As a matter of fact while I am moving the lens, the blades just dangle around inside.

Sorry, don't understand your reply Mike...

Like I mentioned, the camera and lens been on the quite sturdy shelf for more than a month, no vibration would get there.

Hi guys,

Is been a while since I've been around here. I am back because I am extremely puzzled as to what happened recently and I wanted to know if anyone had similar issues or knows anything about it...

I had my 40mm XS since I got my K-01 a while back (still have the K-01 and works just fine), but something happened with the lens... after sitting on a shelf for a month or so, when I picked up the camera to go out for some pictures, I noticed that all the aperture blades inside the lens are loose and moving about as they wish to... as in the things exploded inside the lens and now they are everywhere in all kind of directions...

What in the world happened!? Anyone has any ideas?
Thanks!

That guy is not a fan of anything, but his opinion :). Everything he is saying IS LAW... and angry law!

Bottom line, none of them is stupid per say. They at least have the basics, is just that they tend to be very opinionated and arrogant about their views. Personally I would not consider them reviewers... I see them more as an entertainment act.

Ken is actually a smart cookie in a way. He even mentioned that the website for him is a business. So he posts a lot of stuff just to be there even if sometimes he never actually held that specific camera/lens, but he still posts a review about it... more content, more clicks... etc... business in the end. And that's why he is a clickbait lol.

The angry photographer has more knowledge but he is way too arrogant and annoying. Sometimes he is goofing up way too much and the personal attacks he makes on others are usually not well founded.

Froknow is like the clown of them 3 (less knowledgeable and amusing). But at least he always shoots raw and he NEVER CROPS... XD.

Froknow is a little smarter than Ken, I will give him that... but nothing more lol.
Actually I take that back, he is not smarter, but at least he is actually a photographer and making money out of it.

Oh and there is one more guy... that "angryphotographer" or something like that!?... Man, that is another character...

Lol I remember reading that long time ago...

The problem is that you cannot put his personal opinions aside since his personal opinion goes in almost anything he says... is hard to believe or take as true any kind of specs he might have about any kind of gear. So rather than have a chance and get the wrong info, I much prefer to just steer clear and try and find my information somewhere else.
Anyway, that is just my personal opinion about the guy... some love and even defend him...

Every link towards that site I treat it as a "clickbait". This guy and the froknow guy... I avoid them like plague!

And that is the part that I will never understand... why someone who likes something thinks the whole world should be like that? What works for one doesn't mean it works for everyone - the sooner we accept this, the sooner we will go back to a happy life :D.

I love options and diversity... give them all to me. I don't mind.

I'm really curious if way back then, when the first SLR made is apparition on the market - and the twin reflex cameras were the biggest (physically as well) thing ever - people had the same "wars" of what is better? Or did they just enjoyed the extra option and just took photos and enjoyed life as photographer as it was?

I think a lot of you are getting to hang up into the this versus that and you forget to just enjoy the process...
Who cares what camera you are using if YOU GET the results YOU WANT? Like it or not, at the end of the day, your results speak more than the gear you are using.

I think today's cameras will have an even more worst feature than those hunk of metals (film cameras) that are sitting on the shelf gathering dust. At least those old film cameras are becoming work of arts. These new cameras are just basically another entertainment unit that you are going to change in 3-4 years when the new model comes out...

No point in upgrading. My W7Pro works flawless.
And if they stop supporting W7 only 5 years from now is no biggie... in the next 3-4 years I'm due to a computer upgrade anyway :).

That was actually the FF that was about come out, but then the aliens abducted the plans and the prototype. Humankind could not handle that camera since the volume was turned all the way to 11.

Surprised you have a picture of it... those are extremely, rare. Should sell prints of it on eBay. You will be an instant billionaire - btw, I only request a merely 10% of your earnings since I give you the idea ;)!

I highly doubt they kept the prism... by the looks of the new model, the new prism is most probably bigger...

Impossible to keep the form factor of the original prototype unless they would of went mirror-less... you can thank that to the progress of technology. I bet the original prototype didn't even dream of IBIS or tilting/swiveling screen... or bigger screen... and so on and so forth...

Good luck with that... by the rumors, the mount might of been crippled some more... but then again those are rumors. We will see what's what once we finally get some official specs.
