Soviet lenses will probably work fine in soviet cameras
German adjusted lenses (Leica, Nikon, Canon, Voigtlander) may or may not work

I learned the hard way as I had an old Zorki and tried using the Jupiter 8 in a Leica. Lots of back focusing

Zeiss Ikon Contessa 35

I have been looking at these cameras for a long time, I have most of the non-folding ones, and decided to finally take the plunge when a member of Photrio put one out for sale in good condition.

The Folding Zeiss-Ikon Contessa is one of the Herbert Nerwin cameras, designed to be "symmetric", and while for today's standards is different, it was well received in its time. These designs were made to restart the West German photo industry, after the war.

Nerwin's cameras were the Ikonta 35 and Contessa 35, they both look almost identical but the Contessa was the high end with Rangefinder which is bright and works well and a Selenium Lightmeter (non-coupled) .
It has a 45mm f/2.8 Tessar lens, marked Opton T* due to trademark disputes with the DDR Zeiss, and a Compur Rapid shutter, B,1-500

This camera was well taken care of, The lightmeter works fine and it even has the tripod bushing protector in place.
The case has been restitched and the leather strap replaced by a new one.
It is easy to take pictures with, albeit very heavy. The front door gives stability and looks incredibly good.

Years ago I bought a box of misc filter and holders for series V and the 28.5 push-on fit perfectly
Also I found by chance that the ZeissIkon S27 filters but on the other side (female) work fine

SPECS
Zeiss Ikon Contessa 35 v1 (1952)
* Compur Rapid Shutter (B,1-500, no timer, and X-sync only),
** v2 had a Synchro-Compur with M-X flash and the cable release at the 1 o-clock position
* Opton T* Tessar 45mm/2.8
* Lightmeter works fine in both scales:
** green /closed for bright light
** black/open for low light)
* Takes 28.5 push-on filters and hood or 27mm filter on the female side

Serial Nbr W80xxx places it in the 01-04/52 range of production ( Source: Zeiss Historica Magazine, Autumn 2010)It is a great camera, very nicely made and well taken care of.

The non-folding Contessas:
Between 1960-1970 the name Contessa was used again for a family of fixed lens non-folding cameras that included Contessa, Contessamatic and Contessamat. Initially the same name and catalog number as the folding camera was used, but later it was changed to a new catalog number.

The models showed the evolution in design, internal and external, with the letter E (entfernungsmesser) added to the name of the cameras to indicate the presence of a rangefinder. These cameras are of a modern design, with rapid film advance, coupled lightmeter and very informative viewfinders. Initially, they came with a Tessar 50/2.8 lens and lightmeter coupled with the shutter which is of the Prontor family.

In the mid-60s the Contessamat line came in production, these cameras had a speed priority system that allowed for an AUTO operation. The viewfinder showed the aperture and red marks for over/under exposure. The lens was a Color-Pantar 45/2.8 or a Tessar 50/2.8

These cameras take 27mm screw on filters and and 28.5 push on filters.

I prefer the Spotmatic, for the time (1964) it was a great camera. Light, efficient, reliable and with a great line of lenses to complement it.
The Nikon F was incredibly versatile but it was a heavy beast!
I'dd add the, Topcon, Minolta and MIranda cameras as competitors

The Olympus OM-1 came way later (1972) (OM4 is from the 80s)

Asahi listed 6 different screens (7 in some countries with a TV screen) including a X cross system and a Horizontal split that could be swapped by a technician.
However have to assume that many others were modified by 3rd parties, even when new
Technicians at the time were very good at this.

I used Microphen 1+3 for 23min agitating the 1st 30 secs and then every 2 minutes
Exposure was at ISO 320-400 but since I use old folders I like to have some latitude and that is why I use the extra dilution and slow agitation

Its hard to say if the lightmeter is accurate
Set a camera to average metering and compare the readings

The 35/3.5 is a great lens!
