DPReview manages to do a negative review of the DFA*50

Truthfully, fairness toward DPR is besides the point. This is just lazy, sloppy writing. Since when does doing a "hands-on" piece excuse them from basic fact checking about which company designed the lens? Was there a Google outage that prevented cutting and pasting the relevant info, compounded by not being able to remember the URL for Bing?

Thanks for the quotes to make your point, as I can't bring myself to visit DPR. So many (arrogant) denials of bias from Barney, Rishi and others, but here you have it.

They must have an algorithm that says they get more clicks from negative rather than positive coverage of Pentax.

RICOH ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF HD PENTAX-D FA★50mm F1.4 SDM AW STAR-SERIES LENS

Joining in the posting frenzy...

I'm strictly a Pentax user and have never followed other brands in terms of how they promote their gear.

It is common for others to do these kind of promo sites like Ricoh has done for the K-1 and the the DFA 50mm?

Seconded BigMackCam.

Pentax is said to have one of the most complete APS-C systems, I think even the folks at DPR have said so, in spite of their tendency to be Pentax naysayers. It doesn't make sense to abandon a known strength.

A brief hiatus perhaps for APS-C would make sense and fits in with the also established fact that Ricoh's camera division is small and has limited resources, hence the extended (permanent even?) hiatus for the Q-mount.

Personally, I don't like what I see as the high-turnover rate of consumer electronics being imposed on cameras, and the popular expectations that creates. Obviously that side of things is a strength of Sony and Panasonic, and is a way of applying pressure on competitors I would guess.

For me at this point, between the K-3II and KP, I'm leaning toward the latter, even though there's be additional cost and space needed for the different batteries and extra chargers for the KP and I'd lose the deeper buffer of the K-3II its IR remote sensors. I'd gain built in WiFi and better high ISO.

Hi Norm,

Can't tell from your post if you are aware of the photoprice.ca website, which tracks camera and lens prices for various makes in Canada and the U.S. Here's the link for the black KP:

Pentax KP (Black) - Canada and Cross-Border Price Comparison - photoprice.ca

May save you a bit of time, plus you get the price for the last few months in a graph to be able to put the current price in a bit of context.

Going by some of the dumping on the K-1 from certain folks you'd think that Ricoh missed the boat, but in reading up about the Canon 6D II, I think one gets a bit of perspective. For Ricoh's single entry into full frame, K-1 measures up quite well in terms price and features and one also gets a sense of how Canon deliberately shortchanges features on their lower end models (USB 2.0, 1080p video, single card slot) to artificially segment their full frame offerings. The 6D II has a flip out screen, but to me it makes the K-1 screen seem that much more rugged, in keeping with expectations for a full frame camera.

I found the comments in this posting on Petapixel pretty interesting, plus you also get the sense very few of those who current own a 6D or are considering the 6D II have any idea the K-1 exists:

This is the Canon 6D Mark II

Apropos of nothing, I feel Adam should give out an award for users that get the most "ignores" while not actually getting banned -- we seem to have a couple folks in serious need of some validation and attention. There there. Have a virtual hug. You know who you are.

As to the topic of this thread, DPR seems to be going downhill and they don't seem to care. A lot of websites are about clickbait and made-up controversy these days, and DPR is no different. Some of the newer staff seem decent, but overall, you get the sense of a pretty jaded bunch who get all caught up in the high turnover cycle of consumer electronics and whatever hype there is about the so-called latest and greatest. Meanwhile they lack the perspective and maturity to see that this can't go on forever.

Been a long time since I've posted any photos. Thanks to all the stalwarts who keep these awesome threads going. Here's a couple shots of a lettered sphinx moth (Deidamia inscriptum) that I found passed out on the floor on Monday morning. Took these at the end of the day and then took him outside where he flew off not long after. Hairy little guy. These were shot with the 100 mm DFA macro on the Q:

Thanks everyone for your responses -- very helpful and insightful. The wifi setup seems quite workable at the moment and that's good to know. The KP seems like a great camera and a (sleeper) hit for Pentax.

Adam, thanks for the reminder to check out the K-S2 review. I'll also take this opportunity to say thanks to you and the rest of the PF staff for a really great site.

Monochrome, can't believe you got a KP already!

Happy shooting everyone!

I'm quite intrigued by the KP. At some point I will want to upgrade from by K-01 and it makes sense to me to get a camera with wifi built-in like the KP. I could definitely see remote control being useful as well as being able to do a quick upload to social media now and then.

I haven't seen much mention of the Wi-Fi functionality in the KP either in reviews on in the forums -- has anyone tried it and what do they think?

Ricoh official update the K-mount roadmap

Yes, that sucks for everyone who's been waiting and needs or wants such a lens right now.

Just wanted to point out that we're talking about Ricoh, the same company that undertook a (perhaps) unprecedented act of necromancy by resurrecting the Pentax full-frame camera project and bringing it to production after 15 years and two different owners. Also, they've been pretty candid that the Q-line is in a holding pattern. One presumes if they're keeping the ultrawide zoom on the roadmap, it's because the plan is still to release it. So, it may be not so much that they will not deliver, but that they may be operating on a very different time scale (geologic?) than everyone's normal expectations, which at this point in time understandably appears like it won't ever happen.

It's good to keep things in context.

Adam, Albert and others do a service to the forum members here to sift through all the submitted questions and then go to CP+ to meet with the Ricoh peeps. The PF admin run a forum/community for Pentax users, it totally relies on the users, so why wouldn't they rely on those questions? Yes, Ricoh sent four people, which for them obviously is meant to convey that they consider the interview important and that they consider PF and its members, largely from outside of their home market of Asia, to be of some significance. And there's been follow through on at least some of the outstanding things long-mentioned by forum members, i.e., mechanical SR in video mode. If you're saying that Ricoh/Pentax were their usual relatively tight-lipped selves, well then maybe you're new here? :D:D:D

The DPR interview starts off saying the Sigma CEO is an exceptional interview subject, so obviously that interview is going to be of a different quality and calibre than all the rest, Ricoh included. That's pretty much the definition of exceptional, isn't it?

Someone else drew a comparison to Imaging Resource goes. Dave Etchells is the one that does their interviews and gets exceptional interviews. His circumstances seem quite different. He can take the interview where he wants and isn't necessarily beholden to his readership in the same way PF is to its members and can pursue any line of questioning he feels is interesting. As one of the owner's of IR, I suspect he gets different treatment than Adam and Albert representing the motley crew of us PF members. He's obviously got some kind of engineering background which also makes his questions very insightful. Plus, he has the benefit of having been at this for quite a while, permitting him to cultivate personal relationships with definite people at various companies.

The PF interviews play their role in ferreting out info, as do the PF members who visit CP+ and talk to the reps, along with all the other interviews on IR, etc.

Interesting to see the K-S1 DNA in the K-1 get acknowledged -- I thought the UI looked familiar. A bit like how how Pentax's first flip-out screen showed up on the lowly X-5, then the M-X1 and finally in the 645Z. Seems like nothing gets wasted.

I'm really liking the K-1 microsite. Kind of insightful. I get the impression that the team responsible for it worked hard to make the camera and is very proud of what they achieved and want to share their excitement. (Reminds me of the interviews done by Dave Etchells at Imaging Resource...) It seems very in keeping with the qualities and approach that we all appreciate about Pentax.

Hmmm. I feel like I've been profiled:

- Pentaxian
- Canadian (though I don't think all those descriptors apply to me)
- viola player (third fiddle?)

I haven't seen this one from Spyros Heniadis posted yet, which is basically a feature review, along the line of the ones done by Matt Granger and Tony Northrup. I like his enthusiasm and his knowledge and appreciation of Pentax cameras.

New Pentax lenses rumored for this Friday

Just so life can get back on topic. Uluru is Zvonimir Tosic, presumably of Serbian descent, as Clackers suggests. I only know this because he was trolling another forum member here, and then and on DPR (as Zvonimir and his sock puppet account there Uluru) back when she was trying to get her K-3s with flapping mirrors sorted out with Pentax (basically saying that it was her lousy testing methodology and not the camera). You can check the images in his gallery as well, some of which have his name.

FYI, expect a lot of hyperbole, speculation and misinformation and very little information in his posts. A low signal to noise ratio if you will. Zvonimir, I think calling yourself "a pain in the arse" is rather overstating it. A pain in one's arse would actually provide information, i.e., I should stop sitting on this pointy thing; I think I should go see a doctor, etc....

A lot people are wondering what is the product and why a professional photographer to make an annoucement. A lot of people talk about Pentax's lack of marketing but here we are all gabbing about what their little event will be announcing.

To me, the announcement is not just about whatever product is coming up, but the fact that Pentax under Ricoh is now actually being marketed... I was recalling how the Pentax rep spoke about doing teasers for the full frame in the Imaging Resource interview with Pentas at CP+ 2015:

KS: ...yeah, release the lenses. So our marketing/communication team had the idea: Why not start a teaser?

Now, granted we are all here to speculate a bit and reliable facts about the camera market and Ricoh can be hard to come by. But these absolutist pronouncements and wild speculations get pretty tiresome. We all know you don't actually know anything, right? And have zero connection and inside information to any camera company. (Which would might be OK except when you actually start trashing someone else with actual facts and information see here for e.g.)

So Zvonimir, how is it you now know what Ricoh's motivation is, or that of any other company, with so much certainty, that it's had a wake up call and is now deciding to invest? The vacuum of information about what is going on doesn't doesn't make this attempt to psychoanalyze the company, in lieu of actual facts, believable. It is basically a hypothesis that can't be disproven, which means what? Your current bender of skepticism about the company is to be taken as a matter of faith?

Maybe Adam can start up a Ricoh/Pentax fan fiction forum for such posts? It's really neither news nor rumours.

Thanks for starting up this thread Norm, and everyone for their responses. I wonder if the problem with delays is at the Ricoh end of things, or an communication/coordination issue between Ricoh and Sun.

Looks like I may have dodged a bullet. I dropped off my K-5 and 55-300 there last month. The estimate came through fast enough. Unfortunately, the cost was prohibitive, so I'm going to wait for the new models to come out and go used or the new mid-range model. The lens still works OK...

Point being, I did not get to find out how long it takes to get new shutter block and other things ordered in and replaced.

One good thing was that while the Ricoh Canada website says there's a $25 fee if you turn down the work, they never mentioned it when the camera and lens were picked up.

Apparently Sun is an authorized Canon repaid centre and I did see some DPR threads saying they do good work. But I guess good work is tough to do if you can't get the parts.
