Your wish is my command. Female common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) shot from my office’s window across the street.
Q-S1 + Q/K adapter + 1.4× RC: DA★ 60–250 @250 mm, ƒ 8, 1/50″, ISO 250
That’s an apparent FF reach of 1,610 mm. :)

In February I attended a scientific conference in São Paulo. A pro Nikon-shooter was always with us. During breaks we hurried to get out to have a cigarette but due to his limited knowledge of English our conversations were short… On the last day we attended a sightseeing tour. I had my K-5 IIs with me. He smiled at me and said: “PENTAX! Very good!” :D

Stupid question:
Why (not only here in the reviews but also on Wikipedia) 16.3 Mpx are stated?
If I do the maths right I get 4,928 × 3,264 / 1,000,000 ≈ 16.08.

Hi Mark,
THX a lot – you made my day!
PS: Last year three months 8,000 km in a camper-van. WR-cameras perfect in rainy Fiordland. ;-)

I think you got it wrong. The German adverb “schnittig” is difficult to translate; maybe sleeky, rakish. So the phrase “schnittige Kameras” should be understand as a commendation! Most commonly it is used in connection with cars (f.i. you can say “ein schnittiger Porsche” but if you say “ein schnittiger Hyundai” you will see puzzled faces). Furthermore, it’s a play of words with the noun “Schnitt” or the verb “schneiden” (cut) – which obviously happened to this nice one. It didn’t simply “come apart”. ;-)

I’m too lazy to search, but the consensus was ~8×…
For the K-3 it’s easy because both the sensor (6016×4000) and the LCD (720×480) have an aspect ratio of 3:2. 100% would correspond to a magnification equal to the ratio of the diagonals (7724/865=8.349). Bingo.
The K-5 is a little bit tricky because the sensor (4928×3264) has an aspect ratio of 3:2 and the LCD with VGA 4:3. That’s why we get a 56px black bar on the bottom of the LCD at 1×. Only at higher levels the entire LCD is used. 100% ~5911/800=7.389. So 8× is the closest we can get with the zoom levels supported by the firmware.

I’m a fan of natural-looking DRIs. I can’t afford an HDR-monitor. Developed the PEF to [-1|±0|+1] 16-bit TIFFs, merged and tonemapped in Photomatix Pro 4.2.7.
