Working with a single lens

When I take my Ltd’s travelling with me, I use that 21mm 95% of the time. Focuses down to 6 inches, zoom with your feet. It’s small light and discreet and you’ll have a wonderful time. The thing is sharp, contrasty, and wonderful. The only drawback is that it’s not weatherproof.

Cheers,
Cameron

Took my limited set on vacation, and used the 21 mm 95% of the time. Focusses down to 6”, sharp, contrasty, small and discreet, how could you NOT love this lens? Zoom with your feet!

Decent photo editing software..?

I did review this software for this site here:

Review: Affinity Photo vs Photoshop - Hands-On Tests | PentaxForums.com

I learned so much doing that review that I like this software more and more. For one thing, PDF's become editable, both photographically and textually. And that's just a start! Automatic spacing if you are laying out multiple photos in posters. Yes, you CAN do that in Photoshop, but you have to poke around and invoke it every time. In Affinity, it is just ON all the time till you turn it off. And click detents to line things up in every plane. Fabulous if you're doing weekly posters like me.

It just makes sense. One of a million things I am liking about it.

Cheers,
Cameron

Having used Photoshop since 1996 or so, I am liking Affinity Photo more and more the more I use it. Will never go back to the bottomless moneypit that is Adobe now.

IMO, they have taken all the stuff that has been forever wrong with Photoshop and fixed it. Much more streamlined workflows, much better and more logical interface, endless undos, and things that should happen automatically just do. It's brilliant, but somewhat subtle and understated. The only thing missing is 3D support, if that's a thing for you.

And I certainly hope they're working on a Lightroom competitor. I'd be all in.

Definitely NOT a copy, more of a refinement and an evolution.

And you only pay for it ONCE!

Cheers,
Cameron

Does it just need cleaning? There are some discoloured spots. Maybe clean and repost; I'm definitely interested.

A lot of older people didn’t like the telephone when it first came out, either.

Our phones are now so powerful, they are capable of doing this very, very well. I’ve done this many many times of course in Photoshop, and of course you could’ve done it in the old days in the dark room, in addition to doing it with a camera and lens. So what’s fake about it? If Ansel Adams did it, is it real? Also, you could do the exact opposite in Photoshop and back in the dark room days; you could sharpen up backgrounds. It’s just a different method of doing the same thing. Just because we were stuck with a mechanical method of doing it doesn’t mean that’s the only way it should ever be done. I have an iPhone 12 Pro, and I’ve been into photography since the film days, had many, many cameras and lenses and I can honestly say this is one of the best cameras I have ever owned. And it’s the first one NOT by Pentax . It is simply astonishing. And if you need a big print, get yourself GigaPixel by Topaz, and boom. Or are we only allowed to do big prints from 4x5’s?

Just my humble opinion. Bokeh is an amazing effect that’s been around since the early days of photography, and we’ve become so used to it now that we want it frequently, and we can replicate it many different ways. Including instantly from our smart phones.

Btw, did you know you can change it later on if you changed your mind? Try doing that with your 4x5…

Cheers,
Cameron

Have you ever used a lens correction algorithm in your photo editor of choice? We’ve been have been built into our cameras now. Great glass is becoming less and less important. Especially as our computing power is going through the roof. We can replicate great glass with a ketchup bottle and some powerful computing.

This from a person who has spent a small fortune on lenses over the years. I LOVE them! But, time marches on. If you can’t afford that 85 F1.2, get out your 18-55 zoom and do some processing.

Cheers,
Cameron

I travelled with the 10 to 17 Fisheye zoom, the 15, 21, the 40, and I took a 50 to 200 zoom. But I had so much fun with the 21, I used it for 95% of my pictures. It focusses down to 6 inches, at F8 you don’t even have to focus, and it’s sharp sharp sharp and light. I would leave my battery pack at home and just stick a spare battery in my little bag and off I went. I looked like an old guy with a film camera. Small light inconvenient, and with superb optical quality. If I could only have one lens it would be that one. Zoom with your feet!

Cheers,
Cameron

Take it to a mechanic or a construction worker. They'll have it off in one second.

They do have a tendency to stick. Once off, put some Vaseline on the thread. It could be a galvanic reaction.
