I hope so, Commander, for your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am. :p

Haha! But yeah. I still prefer the regular black with white lettering.

Crazy?? DA 21 (SMC) vs HD 18-50mm for very small walk-around lens

I have to admit I don't use my old (non-HD) DA 21mm Ltd as often after acquiring the HD 20-40mm zoom lens. But the 21mm is still great, and so compact!

New K-3 III video from Ricoh: OVF face, eye and bird detection is coming.

They've just posted it here:

You Tube

Update: I don't have time to write anything detailed now, but here are things you might want to know.

11:46 AF points coverage.

12:11 OVF Face, Eye and Bird detection is coming!
Combination of the new 307 thousand dots RGVIr metering sensor data and PRIME V means that they can detect motion, color distribution and shape, and they use this for image recognition. Mr. Wakashiro specifically said "things like face, eye and bird".
New algorithm for prediction of moving object position means better tracking even if the velocity toward the camera changes irregularly.

16:00 High ISO, better color rendition than K-1 II!
Examples shown are at ISO 102400 and 204800 and it's not like you want to use that kind of ISO, but anyway, K-3 III is clearly better as far as color is concerned.

No. You should buy a $2000 lens and start shooting out of focus leaves against a totally overexposed sky. We all know this is what lenses are made for. Particularly the expensive ones....

You forgot portability - smaller size and less weight - regardless of what you are shooting - don't need a super telephoto for that to be a deciding factor. Thats why I prefer the APS format.

K5 still worth buying?

The K5 was plagued with problems when it came out. Some were fixable, some never were. If you can get one from late in the model cycle it might be OK, but the early ones are pretty risky.
I'd avoid that one and go for a K5II or later. Once Ricoh got involved with the brand there were adults in the room again and the camera bodies got better.

The technology is a bit old and you won't be able to use the kAF4 mount lenses. But If you want the K-5 series, take a look at the k-5II/s. It can hold on its own in terms of image quality. I have a K-5II and it's a darn good camera.

I'm 70 years old with 2 torn rotator cuffs and for some images I've carried a K-1 with my 6 pound Tamron 300, 2.8 more than 2 Km, because there was a really good chance I'd get an image. I'm as resistant as anyone when it comes to carrying around unneeded weight. But there are times when I wonder what people are complaining about.

Do you want the shot or don't you?

I really loved that site in the early days. It was an exceptionally fresh approach with rigorous methods. Sad to see whats happened over time. I can live with bias but the bias is not all that's changed.

As the propaganda arm for Amazon, they're horribly conflicted.

You can't be a reviewer *and* a seller.

They're a glorified Sears catalogue.

Your favorite "Landscape" lens?

I personally like really wide lenses, and built my kit around that. DFA 15-30 was a natural choice for me, so I decided to invest into the lens, and a filter system to support it. Although i do like to use longer lenses for landscapes too, but I'm still waiting for the ultimate solution for that :) (DFA 70-200 f4, please come sooner rather than later!)

It's good enough I leave better lenses home. It takes a little more post processing, my DA*s I often use with a bit of definition, and no sharpening unless I missed focus. The PLM needs base definition more than my DA*s and it need heavier sharpening at times, but the end result is, you can't really tell. The bokeh is surprisingly good.

On APS-C, definitely the DA 21 Limited. Gorgeous rendering, colours, sharpness. It's even better at night, creating superb starbursts.

On FF, I haven't tested as many lenses but for the moment my favourite is the FA 20-35. It lacks some of the character of the 21 but is an excellent lens in its own right.

Now if Pentax release an equivalent to the 21 on FF (think a 24 Limited maybe) I'd be al over it.

Poll: Primes and Zooms... where do Pentaxians stand in 2018?
Posted By tvdtvdtvd

For many years I shot solely with a 50mm lens. I found the shots framed by that lens and didn't make excuses that it was not wide
enough or long enough. I now own a huge array of lenses, all primes(*).

If I could have only one lens on APS-C, it would be a prime, but probably something wider than 50mm. Of the lenses I currently own,
I'd say the SMCK 28/3.5 would keep me very content.

Zooms are like minivans. Generalist at everything, specialist at nothing. Incredibly convenient, but bulky, clumsy, awkward, and for
me, indecisive. I actually find it more difficult to frame a subject with a zoom than with a prime.

(*) - Strictly speaking, I 'own' a couple zooms, namely the DA18-55 and Q02, which came with my K10D and Q7, respectively. I never
use them. I also have possession of a half dozen or so manual zooms that I acquired in gear lots, but they are simply for resale; I have
no interest in using them either.

Although I'm not a street shooter, I find this be pretty much true for landscapes as well. Can shoot all day with this lens. Can't say that about DA 15 and DA 35 Limiteds.
