I think what he means is that in focus areas usually show less apparent noise that OOF, so focusing manually lets him select exactly where those areas are.
Guessing, though.

I agree completely!
I tend to go for bokeh that adds (slightly harsher, more shaped) instead of butter smooth, but it really depends on whatever I can catch at the moment.
The bokeh seems to get much smoother when you're shooting more on the macro side of things (as it should), here's an example of that, (in the upper right is flare)

Someone said earlier that the Sigma doesn't have great bokeh. Maybe I got a peach, but mine seems to be pretty darn nice. Not just bokeh, everything (except the size, which is a bit big for a prime).
I've grown to like the focus clutch, which I used to think was clumsy--when shooting hyperfocal, I can "clutch" the lens back to AF, leaving the mody on MF and the focus won't change.

f5.6:
28mm is just right for a normal looking FoV... not too wide, not too long.
Buy it! ;)

Gosh, that sounds so complex!
One kleenex as a backdrop, and a flashlight diffused through a second one.
Lightboxes are a ton of fun, yea?! :)

I had been using my Nikon D50 w/ kit 18-55 lens for a few months when the AF motor burned out. I started using an E series 50/1.8 from my dad's old Nikon EM, and used it exclusively for months. Now, with Pentax, I have a 50/1.4 and (Sigma) 28/1.8. Except when friends ask for surf pictures, I've never felt to be lacking with these two lenses.
Primes absolutely make you a better photographer. They're a lot of fun, too!

I disagree... maybe for $$$, yes, but exclusively using a prime for an extended period of time really does make you a better photographer. Your framing must be more creative, you have to move around more, and there's more possibility for experimenting with DoF.
For me, it was a full manual Nikon 50/1.8... 4 months with it and I never wanted to use a zoom again

I had the exact same question when I was trying to figure it all out. Focal length is a measure of the lens, not the camera it attaches to. Notice that on a point and shoot, the lens will be "7.2-20" or similar, which is what the lens will be on any camera, regardless of the size image it can project. a cropped 18-55 on a cropped camera will behave exactly the same as a full frame 18-55 on a cropped camera--it's just that the sensor onto which the image is projected is smaller than on film.

there will be more projects, but not the same poem interpretation theme. Next, I think, is to find four different landscapes that each work in BW, Color, with horizon, and with no horizon. Should be a challenge. :)

And another reason, too... when the buyers pays for shipping, it's a damn good reason for sales to not be CONUS only... I'm sure all of us HI+AK people will agree.

Thanks folks :)
Most of these were way out of my AOE, usually only having a 28/1.8 and no other equiptment.. it was a lot of fun.

This year I'm taking a AP Studio Art 2D class with a focus on photography. I was assigned themed shots to take over the summer, here are some of the better ones.

There's no shame, no regret in using a 50. Out of all the lenses I've used for a decent period of time (not too many, but a nice selection), 50's are just plain fun to shoot with. On a APS-C, it's the perfect FL for tight compositions.
OTOH, you won't regret getting a Sigma 28/1.8 either... it's incredibly sharp, awesome bokeh, and fast.

I've found that the majority of softness problems at f1.4/f2 are caused by my own shakyness moving around the razor thin DoF. YMMV, but try a few shots on a tripod to determine if you are the cause.
Anyway, I love this lens... |
