neutral density filter in Photoshop?
Posted By canadave

Hi,

I know that in Photoshop there's a way to simulate the effect of a "graduated" neutral density filter. But is there a way in Photoshop to simulate the effect of a regular neutral density filter, for instance to create that "artistic blurred cascade of water" from a waterfall?

Let me rephrase that. I'm sure there IS a way, if you were painstaking enough with pixels, to do just about anything in Photoshop. But is there a relatively SIMPLE way, like with the graduated filter?

Thanks :)

confused about fully manual mode

Thanks guys...I'd seen the "M" setting and figured it was manual, but I was confused about how the ISO got set (it seemed to be saying that ISO in that mode is set to AUTO). I think I get it now :) Thanks!

confused about fully manual mode

Hi all,

My wife and I are trying to figure out how to set our K10D to a "fully manual shooting mode". In other words, I want to be able to set the shutter speed, ISO, and aperture-- not use "TAv" or "Av" or any of the modes where the camera controls one or more of the parameters. In still other words, the only automated thing I want is the focusing; I want to manually control everything else about the shot.

I've had a look through the manual (no pun intended!), but as a bit of a newbie to SLR photography, I'm still a bit confused how to set the camera to do this. Can anyone give me a shove in the right direction?

Thanks,
Dave

sensor blower not necessary?

Hi,

I just got the K10D for my wife (and myself), and decided to go to my local photo shop and get acquainted, maybe buy some accessories (just getting into photography for the first time here). I've read on these forums about dust on the sensor, so I asked the clerk about getting one of those bulb blowers. He basically said not to get one, because it "blows just as much dust into the body as it blows off the sensor". He also said that the dust-cleaning mechanism on the camera will keep it clean for quite a while, and by the time it needs cleaning, there will be chunks of dust so big that a blower wouldn't work; instead, he said, I could get it professionally cleaned for probably around $50, or buy a sensor-cleaning kit that would actually work--in the range of $75-$100 or so.

I'm a novice, so I couldn't disagree with him on the spot, but it sure sounded strange to me. I thought those bulb blowers were perfectly useful. Can anyone confirm or deny what this fellow said?

Also, on a somewhat separate but related note, I have a dust question. When the K10D's dust-removal system gives itself a shake to dislodge the dust from the sensor......where does the dust go? Surely it just stays in the body and eventually winds up on the sensor again, doesn't it?

Thanks!

need a half-decent tripod...Giottos HD124?

Hi all,

Just looking for a half-decent tripod here....nothing fancy or expensive, I'm not a pro :) Just something my wife can use with our K10D and Tamron to shoot wildlife outdoors on a purely amateur hobby basis. On the other hand, I'd prefer it not to be total crapola either.

We went to our (very) local photo store in our small town, and the only tripods they have are Giottos as far as I can tell. They carry three--the HD 334 ($70), HD 444 ($90), and HD 124 ($100). The 124 seems to be the top of the line.

I can't find any reviews of any of these, although I know Giottos is a "name" brand. The Giottos website doesn't seem to list them though.

Anyone have any opinions on these? Or have suggestions for an adequate tripod around the $90 mark? I've read through the threads on these forums about the Amvona tripods on ebay, but I'm not sure if the shipping to Canada (if they even ship to Canada) might wipe out any price advantages.

Thanks everybody!
Dave

Hi everybody,

I just wanted to officially say hi (I've posted a couple of times already in the forum), and announce that my wife's (and mine, by proxy) K10D has FINALLY arrived!! Now I can proudly put the K10D userbar in my signature....was holding off in breathless anticipation of this moment ;)

Anyway, hello to all...I'm sure my wife and I will be getting a great deal of information from these forums, and hopefully we can contribute more as we learn more about what we're doing. We're both pretty new to SLR photography (both digital and film), so it'll be quite the learning curve.

Thanks!
Dave

LOL....

Seriously...my wife and I are in the same boat with our K10D, which, coincidentally enough, should be delivered today via Fedex. We both know it's a Xmas present for her (and me, of course, partly), so how do we get around having to wrap it and wait, when we'd both like to use it?

Simple. Our solution is to take a page from Mr. Rogers and "just pretend"....basically Stewart's idea, but without the sneakiness ;) Last year I got her a new point and shoot to replace the one that had died....we took it out of the box carefully, then wrapped the empty box and placed it under the tree. When Xmas came around, she slowly opened the box, looked at me and winked, and exclaimed, "Oh my god, you got me a new camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" And of course I replied, "Yes, isn't that great??????"

We're going to do the same charade for the K10D.

Hey there,

Just watched the video and also read the first macro blog entry. Thanks so much for taking the time to put those together! As someone just putting their toes in the water of "prosumer" photography, it's great to have visual guides about things concerning the K10D; additionally, the macro photography tips were fantastic, particularly for my wife, who is going to be doing most of the macro photography in our little family.

Thanks again, and keep the videos coming :)

CS-205 extension?
Posted By canadave

Hi,

I've just purchased a third-party cable release for my imminent K10D. The release looks almost exactly like the official CS-205 cable release.

The only problem is, I'm thinking I might eventually want the cord to be a bit longer than the 3 feet it is. Looking at the connector, it looks like a standard stereo jack. Can I just go to Radio Shack and get a standard male/female stereo extension jack for it, do you think? Or is the jack somewhat proprietary and requires some sort of special extension cable?

Thanks!

is this fisheye lens legitimate?

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome :) I'm looking forward to learning a lot from you all. I probably won't be a huge regular, but I'll likely pop in every now and then with the odd question or answer, I'm sure.

Thanks salty, I actually did a bit of reading and searching through this forum before I posted, and saw the many posts on the Zenitar. I'm tempted...but I'm thinking if I'm going to spend a couple hundred dollars on a fisheye, I might as well save up for a few months and then go the rest of the way for the Pentax 10-17 :)

(and yes, that pic does make me nostalgic actually...I just visited my folks in the W. Village in October before moving to Nova Scotia, and spent some time down by the Brooklyn Bridge, Seaport, and the waterfront. In fact, coincidentally, my decision to buy the K10D was largely solidified when I ran into one of the mobile Pentax minicars down by the Seaport and was able to try out the K10D! (no one else in NYC seemed to have one I could hold in my hands and play around with...Best Buy only sold them online, Adorama only had them new in boxes and wouldn't take one out so I could try it out in my hands, etc).

Thanks again,
Dave

Thanks...I think I'm going to take Peter's advice and save up for the 10-17.

Re the Maritimes: the funny thing, superfuzzy, is that I'm actually from New York City originally (born, raised, and lived there for 30 years), and just moved here a month ago after living in Western Canada for a few years! So the two people who replied are both from my "necks of the woods", plural ;) Like you, I'm not going to say which I liked better (NYC or NS)

Thanks again,
Dave

Hi all,

First post here, so a quick explanatory intro to begin with :) I'm just about to become a proud part-owner of a K10D (just got it for my wife for the holidays, and it's going to be delivered on Monday). We're both SLR newbies, so we're looking forward to learning a lot about the art and science of photography.

I got two lenses as part of the kit I bought, but I'm already salivating over the idea of a fisheye lens :) We live on the beach, with lots of interesting landscapes, that would be perfectly suited to being photographed with a fisheye I think. I see the Pentax 10-17 is a great lens, but it's a little more than I was hoping to spend right now.

I found this "fisheye" lens online:
Professional 0.42X Wide Angle Fisheye Lens With Macro 4 Pentax AF/MF SLR Cameras: 1766 South Bay Camera

It seems to be something you screw on to any lens...would this work with the 18-55 kit lens I have? I'm not a pro, so don't need something to yield absolutely professional results...I figured that even if this thing only gives a halfway acceptable amateur picture, for the price it's worth it. Or am I being naive?

Thoughts and comments welcome....please pardon any ignorance on my part, as it's honestly earned ;)

Thanks!
Dave
