"Pentax Dust and Weather Sealing in Afghanistan" - 400 GRAND!!!

That wasn't the only reason. It just added emotional justification and urgency to the already well-known shortfalls of K-mount (cost, professional lens and flash ecosystems, etc.) that I didn't see being rectified at an appropriate pace, especially compared to what already existed for the other mounts (and for cheaper).

With the recent announcement of Godox's XPRO-P trigger, that pro-grade flash issue ecosystem is no longer a shortfall.

Still lurking on occasion though ;)

Xpro-P TTL Wireless Flash Trigger for Pentax

I'll admit, the two big things that caused me to leave Pentax was lack of premium (yet affordable) lenses and the abysmal flash ecosystem. If this was available a year ago it would have been extremely difficult to leave, as the lenses were out of convenience and want, not need. The flash was the need, and this is huge for K-mount, and makes it a professionally viable system again.

Cactus failed (which I used loyally and for a long while), and is now DOA.

Huge.

What Does Your "Significant Other" Think Of The Pentax Brand?

My wife doesn't seem to really care - she is more focused on the output (although she is VERY familiar with the amount of time I've invested here writing for the forums :D )

But I think I have the best of both worlds...

Jenny doesn’t shoot, nor does she really have a desire to do so...but she loves assisting me on shoots (she’s my VALS) and before I deployed I learned that she actually really enjoys the processing in Lightroom and photoshop. So when I get back I plan to teach her and incorporate her into my workflow :D

D810 lenses

Also...

Furthermore...

(1) The K-1's 1/200s is ONE THIRD OF A STOP slower than the D810's mighty 1/250s. I have ALWAYS said that I wish Pentax would have made the K-1's sync at least 1/250s, better yet 1/320s. Not because it's significantly faster (neither are....1/2 stop at best with 1/320s), but because it would prevent complaints about negligible differences that in the real world are of zero consequence to using flash outside or freezing action

(2a) AF speed is a bit slower, especially with dedicated sports lenses, although Nikon, Sigma, Tamron, etc. all make lenses that are slower than Pentax's best. The Nikon 105 1.4, considered by some one of the greatest portrait lenses ever, is not a whole lot faster than the DA* 55 to autofocus, which is certainly known for being leisurely in that regard.

(2b) The difference in AF accuracy is negligible, and In fact, in independent testing, Pentax often is given the edge against its Nikon competitors (K-3 vs D7200, K-1 vs D810, etc.) in AF-S and low-light AF. Once it turns to AF-C for tracking, yes that changes, and Nikon has the edge. But just AF-S single acquisition accuracy? Nonsense. ESPECIALLY the D810. AND FOR LANDSCAPES AND CITIES

And also....

So you sold your K-1, replaced it with a D810, and are looking at a Sony FF as well for use with an ultra wide angle manual prime? One that you'd have all those features you're looking for inherently with the K-1 that has (1) Rokinon's (and Irix...and Loawa/Venus) lens lineup natively, (2) no need for an adapter, and (3) have electronic contacts for aperture and user-inputted focal lengths upon start-up...?

...

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the support :)

Northern Syria, where I was, has catapulted itself to the front of "the most endearingly hospitable and welcoming people I've encountered in all my travels." I'll never forget that despite rubble such as that everywhere, that didn't deter from the hospitality the locals are known for, with a cup of tea or a meal being offered at all possibilities. I truly loved my time there, which makes it all the more heartbreaking when you realize that that country is ruined for at least the next two generations :(

Ehh....I was one of those hyper "PENTAX IS THE END ALL BE ALL!" folks :o For quite a while too. Like I said before, I still am when it comes to the ubiquitous "what should be my first DSLR?" questions.

Regardless, thanks! :D

The short version is that the AF tracking is far superior on the D750. With AF-S focusing, the AF feels more decisive in the OVF, and I equate that to the GUI and faster AF lenses for Nikon. The K-1, even with the DA* 55, however, made me feel confident enough and that combo was one I used for about 85% of all my shots once I got the K-1 (mailed to me in Syria the 2nd month of the deployment). There's also some software parts to the AF system that Pentax should absolutely adopt, such as "orientation saving" of the AF point. Essentially, each orientation (landscape vs portrait mode) has an AF point, so if you are shooting landscape, but you do a quick rotation of the camera to shoot a portrait shot, the point automatically goes to the last time you selected an AF point in that vertical orientation (changed upon sensing the orientation change thanks to body internal magnets, gyroscopes, etc., which the K-1 already has inside it as well). There's a few others, but that was the most shocking "innovation" I realized when I was first playing with the D750's.

IQ? Some may scream blasphemy at this, but in a 100% blind test (not including 100% view, which shows a magnification difference between 24 and 36 mpx), I swear I haven't noticed a difference. They are both incredibly capable sensors and I can recover a significant amount from the shadows. Sure the K-1 has the edge, and especially since it has an additional 50% mpx boost, but for my needs I'm perfectly content with the sensor in the D750. In fact, since I'm traveling so much, it works out better because the RAWs are smaller ;) Again, don't take that as I'm disparaging the K-1 - I believe we are at the point in sensor imaging technology that all updates are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Gone are the days of the K-7 to K-5 earth shattering differences. Sure an extra boost to mpx is nice, and it's an achievement to not be underscored, especially if the accomplishment is more mpx with enhanced ISO performance at the same time (which really is a big deal). But I've not noticed a "downgrade" in my output, and if anything, it's been an upgrade because of the lenses now available to me, which remains the K-1's more stubborn obstacle to overcome - premium lens availability, especially fast primes.

MENUS? Bar none Pentax reigns supreme here. I am an advanced user and still I have to sometimes pull out the manual or do a google search for "I know I saw it, but I can't find that damn feature." Pentax's menu organization is far superior and the INFO button with (now customizable) critical functions is something Nikon doesn't hold a candle to.

ERGONOMICS? Again, another Pentax win. The grip, the button array, and omg that damn lens mounting procedure. With Pentax, it's the most ingeniously designed system ever, where you secure the body by the grip and use your pinky to release the lens button. On the Nikon the button is on the opposite side and the direction of turn is the opposite. The first few times I had to do it (after having to search for the button) I swear I felt like I was going to drop a lens. It's seriously terribly designed. Also, the D750, while not a "Canon Rebel" in terms of quality, it absolutely doesn't exude the same "I can use the body to fill in as a hammer in a pinch" confidence that the K-3 and K-1 series do.

INCLUDED WIFI? I believe the connection is a bit faster and a bit more stable than what I experienced with the K-1, but the Image Sync App, for all its quirks and hiccups, is FAR SUPERIOR to the Nikon equivalent with the D750. I heard the latest Nikon cameras have a better "image sync" (Snap Bridge I believe it's called), but it's not available for the D750. But the K-1 vs D750 has the verdict significantly favoring the K-1's, especially when it comes to controls (hint - there aren't any - the D750 can be remotely triggered, but you can't remotely adjust the exposure settings :eek::mad:).

Again, the cameras have a lot of similarities and some brand-inherent differences. They are both professional tools not to be mistaken for amateur offerings. I remain pleased with my transition, but there's some things that still wax nostalgic for me, such as the lack of pixie dust in the tactile feel of the body when I pick up the D750 ;)

Thanks! I noticed that the video has exceeded half a million views :D :D :D

I would actually be interested in chatting with you about what that entails. Because without any trained experience in the subject matter, I do have a weird confidence that I'd be stellar in that career field, especially as a creative director a la Don Draper style

I needed the gear for professional use, and while u4/3 would have been nice for what I'm doing now in terms of size and weight (but not cost!), there's absolutely no way I've be able to use it professionally during weddings. And I would question any photographer that insists on doing so.

Nice to meet you! And thanks! As a fan of the military, you may be interested in some of my military photos :)

I reviewed your profile/post history and while you have been a PF member since 2008, it's clear you didn't pay much attention to my work and efforts here and for the brand. Because I can assure you that not just the screeds of a vocal user were passed on to them, before and after the Ricoh acquisition. Rather, multiple marketing plans and approaches with cost estimates (all low-cost initiatives), were provided. Hell, I even created my own as a way to give away my DA* 16-50.

I offered my consultancy services, which included grassroots knowledge of the Pentax user-base, a highly respected credibility among the sizeable and global PF community, and technical awareness of the company's products and how it all nests within the greater industry that far surpassed Ricoh's own marketing staff (I can't tell you the amount of emails I exchanged where I had to explain simple concepts because they didn't understand what I was talking about, including on products in their own product line ).

And I was never hired for any of it - I just was so (blindly?) passionate that I wanted nothing more than to see the brand succeed and garner enough market share to become what I felt Pentax was - a no bs DSLR competitor that belongs on the field, not outside the stadium in the parking lot adjusting the antenna ears on the radio*. Which would have then garnered some added 3rd party support, and then maybe a Tamron or Sigma announcement such as the recent Art Line now available for Sony E-Mount. And the snowball would keep going from there on the path to enhanced market share, brand recognition, 3rd party participation, and organic brand offerings such as faster lens R&D processes.

So with all due respect, please continue to point out how I undermined my own efforts and loyalty.

*This certainly has a cool factor that I and MANY others were and still remain enamored by, but it stopped being such a dominant aspect when all of us saw release after release after release after yet another release of incredible gear -- lenses, flash gear, etc -- not to be available for Pentax.

Always great to hear from you. And I will try to pop in a bit more frequently. If anything, I still at least have a few more to share that were taken with K mount gear in Syria ;)

Thanks again all - I appreciate all the support :)

Hey Everyone,

I figured a post such as this is perhaps a bit overdue - I owe way too much to the PF community to have just disappeared like I did. For those wondering what happened, it was a combination of two things:

1) Work has been incredibly busy in my unique niche in the Army. Matter of fact, I'm actually writing this while on yet another deployment.

2) I no longer shoot Pentax  This is for several reasons.
  • First, I was eying the primes that were coming out for the big three and really wanted (affordable) high end glass like Tamron's 85 1.8 G2 VC (which is the sharpest lens I've used wide open to date. Period. And you all know I've played with my fair share between my own glass and then reviewing lenses here as a staff writer). I know the DFA* 85 is in the works, but my clairvoyance was telling me it would be a while combined with an estimated launch price of $1700. And that price estimate was before the DFA* 50 was a thing, much less knowing its $1300 MSRP. For $1700, I got a D750 and the Tamron 85.

  • Between the last deployment and this one, I found a lot of success second shooting weddings with a local friend whom I've partnered with. I sold all of my K mount equipment and now shoot 2x D750's, Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 VC, Sigma 24 f/1.4 Art, and Tamron 85 f/1.8 G2 VC. That's my entire kit, and because I shopped around and got them all in used/like new or refurbished condition, I was able to get the entire lot for under $3000 (!), which was less than what I made selling my K mount lot. And as an event/wedding photographer, immediately my "credibility" grew as I was no longer shooting a "fringe" brand (sad, but true :(), and then I was amazed at what was now available from the 3rd party world. Upon reflection, many times I have said I would never have left if just the Sigma Art line was available. I dreamed of those Art primes like the 24 and 135 Art with the Pentax K-1 (as many of you have, and please don't bring up the Sanyang/Rokinon versions - I had the 24 in Syria and the 135 would have proven even far more difficult to use in fast-paced situations). I will say, again, that the K-1 remains the most holistically perfect body I've used.

  • Perhaps most immaturely, but I was really spurned by how the company treated me. I was really close to striking a deal with Jim Malcolm, and over the phone we had gotten so far as promising me a K-1 and the new DFA* 70-200 to be an imaging ambassador as a thank you for all the work I had done on behalf of Ricoh Imaging over the years, as well as my very vocal (and candid) desire to collaborate and enhance what I pointed out to be amateur hour marketing. He had a sudden departure and then his secretaries acted like I never existed and essentially "ghosted" me by never returning my calls or emails. For those that remember me (as this place has grown and there's a lot of new faces), you all know how I poured my heart and soul (and some Afghan sand and shell casings ;)) into finding ways to champion the brand.

As for what I've been up to all this time: from 2016 into early 2017 I was in Syria having the time of my life, and I cannot put into words just how fundamentally critical photography was to the success of my team. I almost left my gear home (there was a concern on whether I'd be able to use it because of the sensitivity of the environment), and then at the last minute I decided to take it under the auspices of "it's better to need and not have than be crying, wishing I had it in a place I can't just procure a new kit at the store." Competent photography, combined with my ability to write as well, elevated the quality of my reports to a level I was not prepared for, both personally and professionally. And on this current deployment, the same continues to ring true (only I was mentally prepared this time haha).

Then, I returned back to the United States, had a fast and furious train-up for the follow-on mission, and then deployed again. I've been back in the Middle East for a little while, and am actually getting ready to return home shortly. Nothing as cool or dangerous as the last one, so it's been a comforting change for both my wife as well as my professional development, as the mission and environment are quite different. Upon my return I suppose a follow-up is in order, including with photos ;)

And since I mentioned my wife, Jenny is due at the end of June. For those that remember this, we struggled with the devastating disaster of pregnancy loss (and multiple times), however she is in her third trimester now! As I've been deployed for months 3-7 of her pregnancy, she doesn't appreciate when I tell her the pregnancy has been rough on me, too :D:cool::D. The little boy will be our first, and I mention that and our struggles because there may be some wondering about what came of that announcement as it was several years ago.

As for what's next in store for me - I'm obviously still in the Army, and I was hoping to be an instructor at one of our courses, however it appears that opportunity fell through :hmm:. I'll know in a few months what I will be doing, but then that quickly is followed by graduate school. I haven't applied yet, although I am interested in pursuing an MBA. As a small side note - if anyone has experience in the post-MBA world, can you send me a PM? I have some pointed questions that I'd like to ask...

Lastly, Pentax still holds a place in my heart, and I still lurk in the shadows here from time to time. I recommend the brand for anyone who asks for advice on a starter DLSR, as I literally cannot find anything to beat the K-S2 for the money. I carried one in Syria along with my Pentax K-1 and K-3, and man, what an incredible camera - there's nothing out there that even comes close to the features for the price when coupled with a few lenses like the 18-135 WR, DA 10-17 FE, and DA 50.

I'll include just a small snippet of photos from my time in Syria, however the rest deserve a more dedicated post:

I loved photographing the children when I was there, and these are some of the highlights:

We were driving back home and it was about sunset, so we stopped to take some photos and a local family was doing the same. I was able to get this shot of this boy (Pentax K-3, DA 16-85 WR):

I couldn't decide on whether I liked the color or B&W more (Pentax K-3, DA 16-85 WR):

Visiting IDP camps were always an incredible experience for me. As a small aside to explain that difference, IDP's, or Internally Displaced Persons, differ from refugees in that they don't cross a border. The moment they cross from Syria into any other country, they are then refugees and no longer IDPs.

This teenage girl was sitting in a tractor and smiled for me (Pentax K-1, DA* 55):

For this shot, we had just turned a corner while exploring the camp and and I couldn't take my eyes off this beautiful girl and how out of place she seemed with her striking blonde hair and emerald eyes (Pentax K-3, DA 16-85 WR):

Children will always find a way to entertain themselves, and in this case some tires, sticks, and soda cans fit the bill (Pentax K-1, DA* 55):

Displaced and dirty survivor of the conflict (Pentax K-1, DA* 60-250 in FF Mode):

These girls were playing outside against their makeshift house in one of the camps (Pentax K-3, DA 16-85 WR):

Not in a camp, but rather in a small town, these girls were among the most jovial and playful I came across (Pentax K-3, DA 16-85 WR):

We visited a hospital, and its hasty fortifications--built by ISIS when they were in control of the area in the year prior to this image being shot--struck a jarring juxtaposition with the refuge of what a hospital should represent (Pentax K-3, DA 10-17 Defished):

The inside of the hospital, which ISIS fighters burned (Pentax K-1, DA 10-17 in FF Mode Defished):

A different medical facility, but arguably the nicest and best equipped operating room I came across  (Pentax K-3, DA 10-17 Defished):

Upon my return, I immediately had withdrawals from missing the food. For those that have never visited a high quality Middle Eastern (specifically Levantine) restaurant....do yourself a favor and make it a point (Pentax K-3, DA 16-85 WR):

Another chef making kebob skewers in a different restaurant, with the hanging meat also on display (Pentax K-1, DA* 55):

Sadly, an all-too-common sight - sheer devastation (Pentax K-3, DA 16-85 WR):

A break during a patrol leads to an unexpected encounter (Pentax K-1, DA* 60-250 in FF Mode):

One of my favorite selfies  (Pentax K-3, DA 16-85 WR):

And lastly, the Euphrates River Valley, as shot from atop a mountain (Pentax K-1, DA 10-17 in FF Mode):

Very Respectfully,
Heie :)

Domain Name - To Acquire or No?

So, I am currently the owner of www.alexjansenphotography.com and I have wanted for some time now to acquire www.alexjansen.com for a few reasons.

1) It's short and concise and thus WAY simpler, making it easier to remember as well as spell correctly
2) It has the added prestige of "I own my digital real estate" when presenting it to clients
3) Along with both 1 and 2, alex@alexjansen.com is a phenomenal email address if you ask me lol

BUT, It's considered "premium" (a status given to domains when they are previously owned and then traded/sold), so while it currently listed for sale (sometimes they just aren't available....PERIOD), it's $1800. For those unaware, it's relatively cheap when "JohnSmith.com" could be a $100,000 domain.

I offered $1000 and it was accepted, and even if I went lower to say $500, over 30 years, that amounts to a difference of $16 a year, which is nothing.

So my question is: do you think it's worthwhile to pursue it even if I am not a full-time photographer? You can see from my website that I'm a very competent photographer (for those that don't know me here lol), however I am actually an active duty officer in the Army with 7 years in service and all intentions to complete the 20 year career.

In about 2-3 years I do intend to get an MBA in Marketing (paid for as part of my army contract).

I have the money already in my PayPal account (sold a bunch of camera gear recently), so it wouldn't even be noticed on my checking/credit card, but it's still not chump change...

So yea..........thoughts?

And yea, the focusing screen makes a tremendous difference. And I agree - that focusing screen for the K-1 would make it much better a camera, especially for manual focusing.

The lens of this genre that interests me the most is the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 VC G2.

That lens is one of the single best 70-200's ever made. And it may take that #1 spot when you factor in its price.

And again, not in K mount...

Plaza de Toros in Barcelona, Spain. Now a defunct stadium due to the outlawing of bullfighting in the province of Catalonia, we had it all to ourselves that day when I was traveling with my sisters. It wasn't until after I took the shot did I realize what my 11-year old sister was doing - pretending she was a bull and charging on the sands.

I haven't traveled with the K-1 yet, however when I used the K-3, the DFA 100 was my telephoto because it is so sharp that I felt comfortable cropping down even further if needed. My 3-lens kit was usually:
  • K-3

  • DA 10-17 FE

  • DA* 16-50 / DA 16-85 WR (I later replaced the 16-50 with the 16-85)

  • DFA 100mm WR

If you are looking to use FF mode and are ok with something a little bigger, you have two main options - the DA* 200 or the Rokinon 135 f/2. Both great pieces of glass, albeit the 135 has reached a reputation of legendary. Its only "shortcoming" being its lack of autofocus (MF only).

P.S...I miss Scotland :( You may enjoy this photo essay I compiled of a backpacking trip I did a couple of years ago, to include Edinburgh:

Item Description
With a deployment looming (again), I'm streamlining my kit a bit, and part of that is my flash equipment. I've used the Yongnuo system before and quite frankly, it is subpar to the Cactus system. Not only are the Cactus flashes better built, but the user-interface is more intuitive in my opinion. Additionally, the Cactus has two huge advantages.

First, the top of the wireless master controller (that mounts to the hotshoe and allows you to change the power of each flash) has another hotshoe that allows for a flash to be mounted on top anyway. So if you need wireless OCF flash and THEN a flash on top, you have that option. With Yongnuo, you don't.

Also, my favorite feature is that THE FLASHES HAVE TRIPOD MOUNTS BUILT RIGHT INTO THEM!!!!!!!!!!! You can literally mount them anywhere and to anything!

2x RF 60 flashes and 1x V6 transceiver for $285 shipped to anywhere in the US.

OCONUS is an option as well - just let me know via PM and we'll work it out. They are 100% brand new (as I have another set that I use). All boxes, cases, stands, papers, etc. are of course included and in excellent condition.

And as I am the owner of a K-3 and also K-1, I can guarantee that they will be 100% compatible with your camera, or pretty much any other camera as that's another strength of the Cactus system

Every image in this gallery has been made using those flashes: Alex Jansen Photography | Portraiture

Also, for OCF tutorials, I've got a few on my blog that may be on interest to you: www.alexjansenphotography.com/blog

P.S....unrelated, but soon there will be a front page article (front page of the PF) detailing how the cover photo for the UWA comparison review was made, which involved the same kit. Stay tuned for that... :)

Opening a Wedding/Events Venue - Need Help...

Thanks all for chiming in! :D

Really? Not sure what part of the U.S. you're from but it's extremely popular. Just good a google search for "barn weddings" and you'll get flooded with results. Especially here in the south, it's not a tiny niche...

So I guess I should have been more clear about at least that lol. But yes, it will be a massive barn that's approximately 8000 sq ft (total footprint). Here's a look at the blueprints (which yours truly drafted up using Photoshop lol):

As you can tell, it will be constructed from scratch. Additionally, this obviously isnt the interiour of our facility, however this is what we're going for. This is the interior of the Sycamore Barn - a $10,000-15,000 venue in Tennessee. No, our property will not be able to compete with those grounds lol (if you click on the link to see it).

Obviously there will be some differences between ours, however that's a good idea of the collors and exposed wood we are looking for. We won't have the mezzanine either (although we've already discussed where to put one should we decide to add it several years down the road).

Lisa, when you eventually read this, know that this wasn't my idea :D :D :D

She's of the same mentality. Does your perception change now I've added some information above (blueprints and a sample from a similar facility).

Three words is what I'd like to keep it to. I'm a very big proponent of simplicity. And "Functions" is even more generic and with none of the "pinache" lol

Ha! No, haunted weddings will not be our specialty ;) Locally, and semi non-locally (extending beyond the region), "Cape Fear" is a family name that everyone is aware of and doesn't bat an eye towards. It's also the name of the most significant river in the area (Cape Fear River) that covers over two hundred miles until it ends in the Atlantic Ocean. And I'm with you as to the connotation of each word (Manor being a British estate, etc.).

Again, too many words.

Thanks again everyone, and hopefully I've done a better job of providing ample information. Your input is sincerely appreciated!
