I think marketing and perception have been overuling engineering with too frequent upgrades of cameras. Perhaps with a high performance FF out there people can relax a bit, and settle in for a longer cycle, upgrade a crop this year, the Mr next year and the gf the year after. Longer planning, quality checks etc.

I'd like to see more done with firmware, including older cameras.

Some positive marketing in Australia, a "TV shopping network" segment this evening promoting a deal (k50 + 18-55 + 50-200+ 16gig card) for $AUS 749

A Ricoh rep, Carl, handled it very well. Promoted WR and SR well, didn't point out future lens paths much but that could have been deliberate to keep the concept simple. Showed some nice example photos.

Very sharp in good light considering the zoom range.

It needed the least fine focus of all my lens.

It's tidy, 2011.

Full disclosure had sluggish focus 12 or so months ago, I've 'exercised' it every week since with no problems.

So much that I've already put one zoom on eBay, 2 more to go.

I thought the 50 1.7 was sharp, but the 28 3.5 is even sharper. The 24-60 already sacrificed, maybe even the 50 -135.

:)

Of all place to see fairly well stocked camera shop, Tamworth, regional town in NSW, a k50, a ksii, a superzoom, and an empty Pentax spot (k3 ?), owner a keen Pentax shooter, has already budgeted for a personal FF. :)

I quite dislike Pentax manuals, only thing about the system that suck IMHO.

OP - its just a matter of trial and error, and remember you can use both wheels to navigate through the menus.

Why are you shooting with a Pentax?

Pentax is in my DNA, my late father used a Spotmatic from some time in early 60s until I guess 90s, most shots of three of his kids are with that camera., when I got a SLR in late 80s there can be only one!.

A lot of fun with that SLR, Some cheeky glamour with female collegues.

Fast forward, lost my SLR in a house fire, improvised with a PnS Pentax Optio, then in 2010 finally had money for a DSLR, the Nikon d90 was top of the the list, looked at equivalent Canon, can't remember model but it was a POS to handle, looked at equivalent Sony, meh.

Then happened in a duty free shop picked up a k200d, eureka! With a 18-250 I was hooked.

Having since bought a 50-135, a sigma 24-60, a k5ii and a 18-55 I'm pretty much happily trapped.

Never forget the ignorant camera saleman that tried to talk me out of Pentax due to limite lens choice (poor little ignorant man), and a collegue so genuinly dumbfounded that any one made let alone would buy anything other than canikon.

Why am I happy? Weather resistance, handling, build, size, the AA in k200, the green button, and lastly the wee cracker of a manual lens m50 x 1.7 for 20 dollars.

I've still got dad's spotmatic. Might get it out tonite and see how it looks.

Camera mode(s) to use at a wedding?

Id be using the 16-50 mostly, don't waste time with lens changes.

And use the green button lots, either TAv, Av, or M mode.

Don't be afraid of ISO up to atleast 1600.

Edit - and with regard to fine focus adjsutment, there are several ways, I know two,

one is rough and ready, lay a ruler on the table, photograph it with max aperture, from around 45 degrees focussing on the 150mm mark, I suggest use either most common zoom focal length, or mid range zoom focal length (or half way between those two FL) then crop in on your screen and see where the 'in focus zone is, if its not roughly equally spaced each side of 150mm then adjust in fine focus until it is.

second is more involved, there are videos on you tube but i've used my internet limit for now so bare with me, set camera on tripod, aimed at target on wall around 50 times the distance from camera as you focal length of interest, manually focus (with live view), don't adjust focus on lens, hit shutter release or back focus button and the little green hexagon (focus indicator) will beep, adjust the fine focus setting up one notch at a time until the green hexagon is sluggish, remember the fine focus number this occurred at, adjust fine focus again, down a notch at a time until green hexagon again becomes sluggish, set your fine focus to half way between those two sluggish 'book ends'.

Mate, its like experiencing a new camera personally hearing you go through the journey.

Enjoy.

The real power of better cameras to me is varying the apeture, whether you play with P mode, Av mode, TAv mode or M mode (with Pentax's unique green button (aka holy shit I'm confused button)) you'll have a blast.

And don't be afraid overexposed half a stop.

The kit lens do fine. Use them for 6 months or so, and then assess. By then you have a feel for focal length most used, and other priorities ( zoom with wider range, more apeture, or a prime or 2, etc)

Welcome to dslr photography, and careful its addictive :)

Would there be a niche market for Pentax to re-release some M lens

Fair enough, I didn't know that.

It was this and recently purchasing an M lens that sparked the original thought

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=simple+fixed+gear+bike&rlz=1C1GGGE_enAU35...sLlTkndNy7M%3A

There is a sub culture out there that like simple elegant solutions, and I'm becoming one. :)

Edit - had a quick look at The Samyang options, and nah, too big and cumbersome looking. But thanks

Just a thought. Would Pentax user have interest in 2 or 3 of the more popular M lens being re-released?

Thinking the following benefits as a visible concious legacy gesture;

- simple, cheap and quality
-FF friendly but have a place on crop too
- a reminder to world of Pentax lens philosophy
- also a reminder on the benefits of the green button
- alway room for a little M 24, 35 or 50 in you pouch, bag or pocket to supplement exist lens.
