Walking the GR walk?

Just got an e-mail inviting me to a "GR Photo Walk" in Las Vegas on April 6. Anybody planning to join it?

Of course, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas", so photo sharing afterwards may be a problem. :)

Apparently they'll have a number of loaner "GR Cameras and Accessories available to sign out and use during the walk".

KEH Buying Experience

I used to buy a lot from KEH ten years ago, mostly in their "excellent" category, but gave up using them about five years later after a number of bad experiences with them. For example, a 28 mm shift lens came with a "front lens cap" that was more like the top of a pot of yogurt, and pressed down enough to start scratching the front lens element. No less than three lenses I bought from them, in the K and A series, had apertures that misbehaved, and two of those even failed again after a CLA. YMMV.

B&H has them selling for $100, which probably represents a good contribution to the cause. I believe they are now produced in the Philippines, maybe as a way of saving some of the jobs that used to be needed for camera production.

Cosina tried producing 35mm film cameras for several years under the Voigtlaender Bessa brand, but gave up in 2015.

There's a lot of truth in that. Since the aperture block on my KS-2 started misbehaving, that's where I've landed right now, with a K-5, a K-50, and three K-01s. And the K-1 models are just an extended 36 mp version of those beautiful 16 mp sensors.

The survey worked fine in Firefox.

After I made the mistake of expressing a slight interest in a waterproof compact camera, a whole bunch of new questions about features of such a camera suddenly appeared. I went back and changed that slight interest into a lack of interest, and all those questions went away. So the survey is interactive.

I did take the opportunity of the open question at the end to place my Q system requests: updated lenses with HD coating, production of the 09 Telephoto Macro, and an update of a "serious" body like the Q7. I figure it's like the lottery. If you don't buy a ticket, you won't win. And even if you do, you probably won't, anyway.

Curiously enough, the FA 43 Ltd was offered in a Leica M mount with rangefinder coupling:

Several important diagrams are missing from there, like the DA Ltd 20-40mm zoom, for example:

The Japanese Ricoh site does have one, however:

The Fisheye was not a toy lens, although its images might look like it was if you didn't focus carefully.

You'd need to handle and use one to learn why. The buttery smooth zooming is a cut above the average, and makes the 06 Telephoto Zoom feel scratchy by comparison. Optically, the lens totally dominates the 12MP BSI sensor, and gives you IQ at around the level of a 35mm slide film. Back in the day, that was plenty good enough for most of us.

They do put out "road maps".

An easy thing to do, when we recall "paper lenses" like the Telephoto Macro for the Q system.

Has Musk just forced an "About Me" update?

This experience was no worse than the time I got flamed for daring to suggest (a) that Pentax could produce an APS-C camera that improved on the KP and that (b) the K3-iii would do exactly that by using a BSI sensor.

One of the flamers in that case was a well-respected PF member who, it turned out, was suffering from a terminal illness. This is the internet, and we need to be ready to cut folks some slack.

It is a simple question about the impending need to change a heading in the "About Me" section of the User Profile:

Does "Twitter Username" now need to become "X Username"?

And to me, but:

Indeed. Curiously enough, the somewhat off-topic comment

was followed by what I presume was the moderator's announcement of the move:

K-01 - why did it not suceed?
Posted By lytrytyr

No, the K-01 is a big chunk of aluminum heat sink, designed to absorb the effects of continual live view, and a full-size battery to keep all the lights on. Internally, the K-30 was a regular DSLR, with a skinny battery for when it wasn't being run on AAs.

I do not see these as benefits. They lead to extreme ray angles at the edge of the image field, which lowers the IQ and has to be camouflaged by the software. Digital sensors really need retrofocus wide angle lenses for good raw edge IQ, and they may as well sit on a K mount at 45.46 mm from the sensor.

Pentax knew what they were doing when they engineered the K-01. And the high-price, "designer" approach to the initial marketing is very close to what Ricoh is now doing with the brand.

Please check the first post in the thread. As of right now, there's a field in the "About Me" section of the site entitled "Twitter Username". Since, according to most reports, that "Twitter" brand is disappearing, this field is going to need changing, or maybe even deleted if all the PF users are abandoning Musk's ship.
