Opinions wanted: DA 21mm as walaround main prime

From threadstarter: Thanks for all the great advice.

@humbr: get my wife her own camera: that was priceless. I told her I would, and she said no way she wanted to have to learn all these buttons and settings!
Your advice was great though. We agreed I should do what would be the most fun for me - not necessarily what should be the most practical. After all, she, and the kids all have point and shoot, for these quick candid pictures.

So I have ordered the DA 21mm from B&H (cheapest price around - with adorama - but they have faster shipping).

Against thanks to all - I'll post back to let you know how much fun I'm having with it!

I'm the ThreadStarter: First of all thank you for all the responses. It was very instructive.
I gather the 21mm would work for me - I have been warned that it may be wide sometimes, but I think it will fit my style: When catching kids playing sport and wanting to get more then just a stop-action (which is fun a few times, but when you take 100 pictures of your son shooting the puck or your daughter landing from a beam dismount - it gets boring). Since I can't always get back to get the "play" - wide will work. Also many warned me about cropping becoming necessary. That should be OK. I may be weird but I take a lot of pcitures and then prune like crazy (in lightroom). So once I find the few keepers, I don't mind cropping them. (Although if I had the pixel count of a K20D or K5 instead of K10dD, I would mind cropping even less).

Some of you suggested I look at a wide zoom. I took a look and found interesting reviews which led me to the Tamron 17-50MM f2.8. People say it is very sharp - almost as good as primes. I spent a lot of time looking at pics on flicker: they do look sharp.

The DA 21mm Flickr stream looks real good t0o. In fact some pictures seem to "pop": there's just something about them (maybe more details?). The tamron zoom pics look sharp, but much fewer actually pop and make me go "wow". (Of course I have not found pictures comparing both lenses from the same photographer: and taking "wow" pictures may have more to do with the person behind the camera then the lens in front...)

So I am suck for now. I like the 21mm for its low weight, and beautiful pictures. My wife likes the zoom for its versatile uses, and ease of taking the picture you want without moving the feet.

I do appreciate the responses, so if any of you can offer further guidance (DA 21mm vs zoom 17-50mm) - I"ll be thankful.

I have a K10D and the DA 50-135mm f2.8. I find the 50mm too long for pictures of kids on trips, or outdoors (in close quarters) and indoor. (can't always back up to get the angle of view).
I tried da 35mm but it's going back because it did not give me much more angle, and has horrible front focus (and my K10D is already adjusted for my zoom's back-focus).

I was thinking of going with DA 21mm. IF you have it, had it, or have a zoom that covers that range, what is your opinion of using it as a walk around lenses. As an example, we are going on a cruise in a month - I will not take the bulky zoom. So I would have only the K10D and the DA21mm (or whatever else you recommend :-) ) . My thinking is the 21mm will be useful for close quarter on the ship, but give me a chance to get a few landscape when we hit the highlands.

Never had a wide angle before. The Zoom was purchase to take kids sport pictures in low light (ex: hockey rinks). I'd be grateful if you shared your own experience.

Also, given that the K10D has no multiple lenses adjustment, could you comment on whether the DA21mm tends to front or back focus?

K10D lens focus issue - should I upgrade

I have a K10D and the 50-135mm DA. It was always back focussing and I finally found out how to adjust it. Now it's wonderful. BUT: I just bought the DA 35mm AL (not the macro) - and in front focuses like crazy. It seems the K10D cannot be user adjusted for more than one lense. I was also going to buy the 21mm. It seems that the K10D is not really good for me if I want to keep my da zoom (for sports pictures) and build a fixed lenses collection - since keeping one lense adjsuted will mean that the others won;t auto-focus well.

So I was thinking of upgrading - to the K20D opinions? I can also get K7 ($200 more than used K20D). Problem is K20D have more shutter count 9Typically > 50,000) - should I be worrried?

Opinions?

Thanks in advance
