Pentax K5 + DA*300F4 improving autofocus speed
Posted By Andrew Crouch

I have had a DA*300F4 since early 2013, and use it with my K5 firmware V1.01 purchased December 2011, often for photographing birds. Autofocus speed has always been slow with this combination (small birds in motion), and it hunts particularly when taking birds flying overhead with only a sky background. Autofocus C helps, but is only a little better. Is anyone aware of any firmware or other refinements that have come since these dates that may have improved this situation, or particular combinations of settings that may help?

Thanks.

When using playback to compare the focus quality on a number of shots of the same subject taken in succession, is it possible to set and hold a particular zoom level at the first shot so that zoom is maintained for playing back all the subsequent shots?:

Wow, the only one I could find on that list you posted was upwards of $500. That is a lot to pay for a set of extension tubes!

Thanks, I am beginning to understand this now - the AF assist function is extremely hit and miss in the dark.

With P mode, flash mode set to flash on, the flash popped up, ISO 1600, and with the AF assist lamp on and confirmed to be working, the camera struggles to focus unless there is very high contrast / definition in the subject and the subject is within 3 or 4 metres. If it can't find these conditions, it refuses to focus, and won't release the shutter.

Is this other people's experience, or is there something else I need to do?

Can anyone advise what settings to use with the camera to take photos with the 18-55 DA lens where the subject (an animal or bird) is in almost complete darkness, and at an unknown distance within say a 3-10 metre range (i.e. there is not enough light coming through the viewfinder to see anything other than a vague shape)? I assume in this situation it is too dim for auto focus to work, or does the TTL preflash allow the lens to focus?

The user manual is little or no help.

Thanks

K5 for digitising slides

Thanks to all for suggestions. Since it looks like the projector mode I was using does not lend itself to major improvement, my next step will be to try the lightbox option. I don't have a macro lens currently, but if it looks promising using a normal camera lens I might invest in one. The time it takes for each individual slide is a significant factor for me.

Cheers,

Andrew

Hi Arnold and thanks - actually your samples, particularly the bridge, illustrate precisely what I was referring to - seen on the projector screen, these slides of yours would be full of life and sharp, but the camera photo off the screen robs the colours (particularly the blacks and whites) of their vibrancy. I would be most interested to know if anyone has solved this, still using the projector method.

I like many others wish to digitise a large number of old family colour slides, ideally without spending a lot of time (or money) on the process, as many of the slides have more sentimental than photographic value. I have experimented a little with using my K5 + 300mm prime lens tripod mounted to photograph the slide image projected using a quality projector onto a smooth white surface fixed to the wall, though the results are much less vibrant than the image viewed on the wall.

I am interested to hear whether there are particular camera settings that give the best images using this method.

Thanks, Andrew

auto focussing with K5 and 300mm DA* f4

I have had a 300mm DA* for a short time, with my K5. I have noticed that the auto focus struggles when shooting birds low overhead (i.e. they fill a substantial portion of the field) against a sky background (with plenty of light). I would have thought that the contrast of the bird's outline profile against the sky is ample for easy AF.Whether it is the angle of elevation of the lens, and whether it's just my lens, I'm not sure. I don't have the same problem with my other AF lens, which is the 18-55mm kit lens.

Has anyone had this problem?

Cheers, Andrew

K5 + DA* 300mm lens

I am thinking of purchasing a DA*300mm F4 lens to use with my K5. I also have a Teleplus PzAF 1.7X which I would like to use with this combination particularly for bird photography, so this would give me the equivalent of about 510mm F6.8. A couple of questions for those with experience with this combination or similar.

Does the Teleplus work well with this lens without any shortcomings?
Has anyone had experience using this combination, particularly in regard to autofocus speed for taking bird shots?
Does the quick-shift ability to overide the autofocus rapidly to manual work well in this application ?

Thanks,

Andrew

change default 2s self timer time on K5??
Posted By Andrew Crouch

I am taking some photos through an astronomical telescope, which because of its mass and shape has a significant settling time after any mechanical disturbance (e.g. pressing the shutter button on the camera or the action of the mirror locking up). I am using the self timer at 2s to achieve immediate mirror lockup followed by 2s delayed shutter release which works quite well. However, I am wondering whether a few more seconds settling would be better again.

using interval shooting doesn't achieve the desired effect, as it seems to disable the shutter release delay inherent in the 2s self timer function - the mirror locks up just prior to the shutter release for each shot in the sequence.

So the only option would seem to be to extend the default 2s timer time. Is this possible?

Thanks, Andrew

mirror lockup

I was trying mirror lockup the other day with the idea of minimising camera shake when using my K5 in conjunction with a spotting scope (1000mm). I use a tripod with self timer normally, but was interested to see if lockup would help further with stability.

The user manual and me trying it seems to indicate that it is not possible to use lockup at the same time as the self timer. Does it not defeat the purpose of using lockup for this purpose if it forces the shutter button to be pressed manually to take a photo, or am I missing something? (I can see that using a remote control or cable switch accessory would overcome this, but is there any way to combine lockup with self timer with just the camera as supplied?)

Thanks,

Andrew

Thanks Ron and NotSteve for your advice.

I have in fact also been inspired to shoot swallows amongst other birds recently, and it was that experience that made me realize just how challenging birds in flight can be, and seek some further advice. The good thing about swallows is that they don't fly away so much - they keep coming back, but boy are they aerobats. As mentioned I have a K5 purchased fairly recently, and my only long lens equipment is a manual Pentax 200mm F4 SMC and a Teleplus Pz-AF 1.7 teleconverter, so 340mm combined. With the speed and unpredictability of the birds' movement, hand held was the only option, and I had to change focus, compose and shoot virtually all at once. Occasionally I used the green button to set the speed, but I didn't have time to do that while taking the shot itself. It was exhausting! I surprised myself by getting a bird in most of the frames, but only about 10 of 150 shots were tolerable, and none were really sharp. Some of my specific questions are:
  • my 200 lens is not super sharp anyway, I'm wondering how much difference a sharper lens would make (including for subjects that are better behaved!)

  • would an auto focus lens be of any use in this kind of situation, as it would have to focus in probably 1/10 second or less (I'm guessing here)?

  • there is a trade-off between all the factors (shutter speed, aperture - fixed in my case, ISO), and you are more or less forced in this situation to go for high speed around 1/2000 (the wings can blur with anything less), stop down for better depth of field, and high ISO to compensate for the resulting light reduction. Have you found any kind of magic combo?

  • these birds are so small that with 340mm the resulting shot needs cropping anyway to increase the size of the subject, but I wonder whether it would even be possible to use a longer lens like a 500 to get a bigger image because it would become increasingly hard to track the bird.

  • I have seen some suggestions elsewhere about whether SR helps in this situation or not. Any thoughts?

I am posting a few shots for illustration, but I am hoping I can make some steps up from these in due course.

Cheers,

Andrew
