It's been ages since I posted here, because quite frankly I mostly take pictures of my new daughter (she just turned one!) and between taking those pictures and taking care of her, I don't have much free time. But she's getting older and more independent now, and my K200D was getting older too, so for Christmas I got the funds to buy a new camera - and of course I chose the K30!
For the record, the K200 still works (sometimes the batteries are wonky) and I shot 143, 639 photos with it. It is a great camera, but I'm betting the K30 is going to make some pretty decent photos as well :)
It was already dark by the time the camera arrived, but I did manage to get this one of my little girl after her bath:
I can't wait to take it out tomorrow!

Thanks, and it does help. I want to pair the K-30 with the Sigma 70mm F/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens for Pentax for nature macro and portraits. It would be nice to have that feature visible on the lcd screen as well, since the screen will zoom in further while focusing the subject like the K-x does. The ability to manual override the focus point on the screen would be the cream on the top. Rite |

This picture was taken in the middle of a frozen lake, shortly after midnight on January 1, 2013, using my blue Pentax K30 and the DA 18-55 WR. A tripod was used so I could use the camera timer and get myself into the picture (far left). I don't have a flash, and the onboard flash would have ruined the picture, so we laid our headlamps down in the snow and pointed them up to illuminate us.
The temperature was -12 celsius. The camera buttons were sticky, and the camera itself was responding kind of sluggishly, I'm assuming from the cold. Nevertheless, it powered through and helped deliver one of my first shots of 2013.
The K30 performed admirably during the entire two days I spent in the frozen wilderness. I could not be happier with my camera!

my k30 is so fantastic camera, that I see no reason to think about upgrading it to perform better than now. I just don't know if there is a space for improvement :)) maybe I still have memories about my old K10 and K-r. K30 is so superior to all of my previous bodies, that upgrading a firmware sounds totally unnecessary.

While maybe not considered a pro I am far from a casual user and the K-30 appealed to me a great deal. I absolutely love mine and certainly I think the K-30 leaves little to be desired for the more advanced photographer. I find it unfortunate if it is being overlooked by that segment.

I am a pretty serious hobbiest and I just got a k-30 and love it. I was torn between whether I should buy the k-30 or the k-5 or the k-5II and I decided to go with the k-30 and get better glass.
I used canon for years both film and a rebel. I am not a pro, but I have been taking hobbiest shots for years and I think the k-30 is WAY better than my Canon rebel, which was the equivalent price point at the time I bought it 3 years ago.
I am really loving the image quality. I think the only downside and probably why there are less Pentax k-30 enthusiasts (in my Pentax newbie opinion) is that there are way fewer auto focus lenses available at a decent price for the Pentax. On the other hand, there are many more manual focus vintage lenses available.
I am certainly not regretting switching to Pentax. :)

It really is a great camera, but I'm under the impression that it appeals mostly to casual users who aren't that into photography, which is why the K-30 is underrepresented on PF!

I got mine few days ago. Best camera I ever had. I am amazed how well it performs with my tamron 17-50 and da70mm. I don't see me buying a new camera in the next 5 years...

I've noticed every EPL match has been in a downpour. The woodgrain is cool, guess you need to save for a WR lens, or buy a rainsleeve!
That must be a fantastic camera in that it took that photo without you! LOL Don't sell yourself short, great photo!
Interesting edge of light there! Welcome to the K-30 club all! |

It all depends. I am a firm believer that your pictures are only as good as the weakest item in your equipment box (which, for most people, is themselves ;)). I have the K-r, but only have some old and cheap FA glass (the good old rattly plastic zooms...). Right now I find that the camera's capabilities way outclass the glass, so I'm mostly held back by the glass, not the camera. It then makes sense that my next upgrade path is glass. Once I have that all sorted then the glass will most likely be way better than the K-r, and then I'll get a new camera to match the new glass. If I already had the glass now, then I'd be looking at a K5-IIs in no time. So it all depends where you are at in terms of gear and what the weakest link is in your work process, and get that aspect upgraded/improved.

More than just a moon shot I see. Looks like it turned out very well! I've never been able to get that sort of detail with my 200mm, even with a tripod...

Wow! Love the colour and clarity of this image. I also like the way the branches frame the moon. Really really well done!

I've been looking around the forum the past couple of days and thought I would post here. Glad that the forum supports Tapatalk for mobile devices since it makes it much easier to follow. Also good to see some familiar names from other forums on here.
I'm located in Greenville, SC and have owned Pentax equipment since the late 1970s starting with an ME film camera. Since going to digital I've owned an *ist DL, K10D, K20D, and just got a K5 at the beginning of December. I'm loving the improvements in the K5. I maintain a school website and shoot lots of events to post photo galleries there (approximately 110-120 galleries a year.) The events range from dramas, to concerts, to sporting events of all types.
I look forward to being a part of the forum.

My Super Tak 50/1.4 has easily replaced my 18-200 as my standard lens. Hasn't come off the camera since June (except for extension tubes).
K20D makes a great combination with it. Limited (actually no) zoom range is nothing to worry about. Any prime user will make that clear.
For me, it's a bonus. Anyway, enjoy your manual lenses, everyone!

Good for you. I know we all have been there. Once you start seeing how great these are, you'll wonder why everyone is paying big bucks for these new ones. I know I am.

That is an Olympus OM mount. The giveaway is the existence of pushbuttons on the sides of the lens base -- one is lock-release, the other is aperture stop-down. An OM lens is very easy to modify for Pentax PK mount if you don't mind using a Dremel metal-cutting blade. I've chopped a few.
But that lens is on the heavy side. I am reluctant (paranoid) to chop long heavy lenses. Possibilities:
1) Make the Dremel cuts and hope the mount remains secure.
2) Replace the base plate with either a PK-M42 adapter or the base from a PK lens.
3) Sell the OM lens and find a PK version. They are neither rare nor costly.
I recommend #3. Unless you need some lens-modding practice, it's not really worth screwing around with. Cheers!
