Are the Auto-Takumar and Super-Takumar Lens Elements Interchangeable?

I’ve just disassembled a Super Takumar, A Super Multi Coated Takumar and an SMC Pentax-M. All 50mm f1.4s to attempt to replace the central front element in the Super MC Tak which had fungal ‘etched’ smear in its centre which affected performance. I can confirm that in these 3 lenses the optics are definitely different. The Super Tak element was too thick and resulted in the front element hitting it on assembly. The Pentax-M element was thinner and a lot lighter ( I should have weighed them really ) but it fitted so I tried it. Image quality became awful though with massive amount of CA. So I’m on the lookout for another Super MC Tak donor which has other defects but a usable central front element at a bargain basement price. I know it’s not the same lens you are working on but it might save you from wasting time and money like I have.

SMC F 70-210 ED element

What I find interesting is that in the Lens Brochure attached by TwoUptons all of the lenses bearing the ED suffix state that they have ED ELEMENTS whereas the SMC F 70-210 is listed as incorporating AN ( singular ) ED ELEMENT. If this was one of the smaller easier to produce elements the price difference might not be so substantial. I notice from your list the inclusion of an F Economic which I assume to be the Non SMC ( And Takumar ) Version at 200 guilders less.

Further, the listing for the ECONOMIC quotes 13 x 9 Formula not 10 x 8.

Okay, thanks TwoUptons that sort of throws a spanner in the works now! So I now believe the ED element MUST be correct. But I still have to find it. Anybody know a simple test for ED glass? I suppose a simple comparison of out of focus colour separation might work.
Would I be right in assuming that the best location for the ED element would be near the rear of the moving group?

I suppose it depends if we take the contents of the K-Mount Page as gospel, or do we take the advice of members like After Pentax to verify information from their personal resources.
Maybe the K-Mount Page could be a dynamic Wiki style resource where the content is editable/updateable when new proof surfaces.

For the time being unless I can find reliable evidence to the contrary I am leaving the vgc Takumar intact ( Let’s call it an InTaktumar ) and will begin dissassembly of the SMC when time permits me to. I hope to share lots of info and images of this when I do.

I weighed them both on the kitchen scales and they are identical 538g each without caps.

I also read on one post (here or in dpreview ) a photocopy of a lens paper insert for the Takumar which states 13 elements in 9 groups.

There seems to be a bit of discrepancy regarding this. According to this forum and other sources the optical formula for the non SMC 70-200 is the same 10x8 as the Tak but I have a copy of this lens and I can assure you it is completely different externally and internally, particularly with respect to the diaphragm position, whereas the two 70-210s look identical. I only paid £15 ( $22 ) for the two of them so no great loss if it all goes pear shaped.

SMC F 70-210 ED element

Hi,

I picked up a couple of lenses very inexpensive, one a Takumar F70-210 in vgc, the other an SMC F 70-210 in very poor condition.
I believe the Takumar is an almost ( if not actual ) identical copy.

I have read on here that the SMC version contains at least one ED element so I am considering replacing the non ED elements from the Tak with the EDs from the SMC. If I can find out which elements they are.
Anyone have any idea which ones they are?
TIA.

Hi Effet.de.nuit
Did you ever sort out the problem with your 40mm xs lens??
My own 40mm was extremely sharp and had beautiful colour rendition until a few weeks ago when somebody banged into my camera at a crowded zoo and it has been jsut like yours ever since. would love to know if you sorted the problem out.

Question on Metz 48 AF-1 zoom information

I just bought the Metz 50af-1 and after reading the posts here that said the display was out of tack with either the lens focal length or the flash focal length I decided to try it out with my F 35-80 and FA 28 - 105 lenses. The flash had previously been used with an A 50 1.7.
With the 35-80 fitted to camera and half press shutter release the set focal length (35) was multiplied by 1.5 and the Metz set its zoom to 50mm causing the zoom to move from its previous position.. Each adjustment of lens was followed by an automatic adjustment of the flash zoom up to 70mm on lens corresponding to 105mm on flash, i.e. the camera relays the effective focal length to the flashgun. This was repeated with the same results using the 28-105.
Setting S Zoom to the ON position the Metz puts its zoom in exactly the same physical position as it did before but the display shows the same focal length setting as the lens. So it works as it says it does.

Hi everybody,

I was first introduced to the world of Pentax in about 1976 when I thought about buying a decent camera and my sister told me a work colleague of hers was selling one for £60. She brought it home for me to have a look at and decide. It was a Spotmatic SP500 and she was instructed to tell me that everything in the case was included except for the lens that was fitted ( the 50mm 1.4 Tak ) but it would have another lens. Being young and naive I didn't mind as long as it had 'A' lens. As soon as I took it out of the case I was hooked. It looked fantastic, felt fantastic and I had never seen the magic of Through The Lens composition and focussing before. I quickly agreed to the asking price and next day it came back but with a Prinzflex 35mm f3.5 if memory serves me. As I learnt about photography over the next few years my photos improved and I would try different techniques every month as featured in magazines. When it was introduced I longed for an ME Super but just couldn't afford one so I stuck with my trusty SP500 for 30 years. I added a Chinon 50mm f1.8 and a 70-200 Zoom which I bought from my sisters catalogue for a whole weeks wages ( on easy terms ha!) I always considered improving my lenses and splashing out on that ME Super but I never did. Anyway, Digital had arrived and my wife bought me a 1.3 megapixel Olympus for a ridiculous £660 which I used for a few years. One year however, on Holiday in the Greek isle of Kos we drove over a hill to behold a beatiful bay. I set up the Olympus on self timer on a mini tripod and joined my wife. When I got home and put the photo on my computer I was incredibly dissappointed. The view was nothing like the one we experienced. I knew it was time to go back to film, and the SP500 for all serious photos and keep the Olympus for snapshots. The Olympus was upgraded over the years to an mju 700 and then a Fuji F40d. But none of them provided the magic of depth of field and sharpness of a decent lens.
Last year I decided to plump for a digital SLR as prices were now reasonable, however, to be certain I would be happy with the extra size and weight of one I took my SP500 from its hideaway for the last two years and took it on holiday. I was so impressed with the results I knew I had to get the digital. I knew that nothing other than a Pentax would do for me. After about six months of reading up and deliberating I picked up a used ( but very little used - only 230 shutter ops ) K10d from ebay in immaculate condition. I decided from the start I wasn't going to skimp on cheap non Pentax lenses and have in the last couple of months built up my collection of lenses, the pride of which is the SMC Takumar 50 1.4.

So now I just have to learn how to use the K10d and get out there taking beautiful photos again.

I have already gained lots of information from the forum and would like to thank everyone involved.

Cheers.
