Focusing properly...

What do you mean by angle? I don't think the angle you are at has anything to do with this, it has to do with the distance from the lens. The only other factor is the circle of confusion, but the only control you have over that is by using a different sensor, which basically means using a different camera body.

Focusing properly...

Is everybody forgetting that your aperture is just one part of DOF? You can still get a fairly large DOF with f/1.4 if you are standing far enough away. DOF is based on aperture, focal length, and distance to focusing point. Change any of those three things and you change your DOF. If you are standing 10 ft away from the focus point with your 50mm set to f/1.4 you have 2.75 ft to work with, that definitely isn't razor thin. It might not be enough for a large group, but for a couple of people it should be enough. One of these days I'm gonig to go find the actual formula so I understand which part plays the biggest role, but it seems to me that aperture is actually the smallest factor in the equation. From seeing people play with the kit lens for example, if you are standing 10 ft away from your subject and are wide open, the 18mm side has a max aperture of f/3.5 which gives you around 20ft in focus, now zoom into 55mm, which has a max aperture of f/5.6(this aperture, if nothing else changed, would give you a larger DOF), and now your DOF changes from 20ft to around 2ft. Anyway, you can adjust your DOF, while keeping your wide open aperture, by moving your feet. The further you scoot back the larger the DOF becomes. Here is an online DOF calculator if you want to play around with it.

Compromising between ISO and Aperture

I personally don't change the ISO unless I just have to. As somebody mentioned if you are getting into this situation a tripod is probably the best answer, that is what I do. I rarely set my ISO higher than 100 on my K10D or 200 on my K110D. I would rather let the shutter speed adjust and get the dof I want at the lowest ISO possible, again this probably means you need a tripod.

Da Lens Prices ! Low Low Low

Too bad I'm not ready to buy a lens right now, I would love to get the 16-50 for that price. I'm still a little hesitant because of the QA issues though, I'm not sure they have been solved. As for buydig, I have bought several things through them, and beach camera(they are sister companies), and have never had any issues. I wouldn't have any reservations in ordering through them.

I have tried the trials on dynamic and photomatix and I thought they were pretty similar results, but I did like dynamic a little better. I have heard really good things about artizen though, I haven't had a chance to try it. Has anybody here used it, I have heard it is a lot better than photomatix.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I haven't used the SR often, because I am usually on a tripod, but if I do need it that will be helpful to know.

Yeah, the cord and the adapter for your camera is all you should need. Just curious, why don't you want to do wireless? I use mine wirelessly and it works great.

Seems like a lot of work, in photomatix you don't need to do that, you can just load the one file and tone mapped it by itself, you would have got the same result.

Also I don't do my HDR in M, I do it in Av. The reason for this is because in Av mode I know my dof won't be changing on me. Then I just use bracketing to get the extra exposures. I love that the K10D will let you choose between 3 and 5 shot bracketing and that you have the flexibility of up to two stops between each bracket. There was a thread on here a month ago or so that linked to an article on dpreview or somewhere else talking about HDR and the K10D was one of three cameras they said were the best for creating HDR images. Mostly because of the ability to bracket 5 shots and it could be done in around 1.5 seconds. The importance for this is if there is movement in the shot. Even clouds can move quite a bit on you if you were in M and then changing the exposure yourself, with bracketing you can just hold down the shutter and get your shots rather quickly.

I'm guessing this popped up because you had SR turned on, as it uses that information to try and give you a sharper picture. So how do you answer the question for a zoom lens? I rarely use SR, because I mostly shoot on a tripod, but when I use my TC it asks that and I never know what to put in, because I have a zoom, plus a TC, what number does it really want? If I put my 50-135 on a 1.7X TC, for example, does it want me to say 135, or 230, or something in between?

It appears as though it won't find RAW files, is that right? The spec says it recovers gif, tiff, jpeg, and exif, so does that mean my .PEF, or .DNG files are out of the question? I alway shoot RAW, so if it doesn't work for RAW it is of no use to me also.

Where do you get your eneloops?

Yeah, I saw that thread and checked, they are $9.99 for a 4 pack, at least online, and they were out of stock online and at all the stores according to their store locater. Circuit City is a little bit of a drive for me, so I don't want to waste my time hoping to find them. It could be that they have some of the 8 packs in the store, but they don't have them listed online, some left overs or whatever.

Is Wolf the same as Ritz? I always wondered that. It is actually called Inkleys here in Utah. I'll check them out. I noticed in another thread somebody said they got a 16 pack at Costco, but I couldn't see any on the website, I'll have to go in and see.

ETA: Looking at Ritz's webiste they have them for $11.99 for four, Circuit City has them for $9.99, so its already cheaper at Circuit City. Any other thoughts, or is $9.99 a good price and I should just get those?

I have four sets of batteries for my K110D and they are all dying now. So I need some new ones and I definitely want to start using eneloops. I have been looking online for some good deals and have seen that things are pretty much the same price everywhere. So where do you get yours from? Do you have a specific place, or just search for the best deal? If you search for the best deal, who has them for a good price right now? Also I noticed that all the ones I have looked at are 2000 mah. Is that what they all are, because sometimes I can't see that listed on some sites. I don't want to go with a cheaper price and find out they are 1200 or something like that. Sorry for all the questions, but TIA for your answers.

Setting the shutter speed AND aperture on the K10D

Its not like you can just set your aperture and shutter speed to whatever you want. You can only go so far away from what your camera wants to do before you'll get a picture that is exposed to poorly that you won't be able to use it.

ETA: If you just want to change it a little bit I'm a huge fan of using EV compensation.

photoshop vs lightroom?

I don't think there is a vs here. They really work hand in hand. If you can only get one or the other I would probably suggest getting CS3, it has bridge and ACR that work a lot like LR does. They aren't as complete as LR, but they will do a lot of the basics for handling files and RAW editing. I use both together, but only having LR I think would be a problem since you are missing a lot of things that PS can do. With only CS3 you can pretty much do whatever LR can do, just not as well.

I hope they don't add a switch like that. I have my quick release plate on my camera at all times. So the switch would always think I was on my tripod and I wouldn't be able to use SR.

I just bought a new internal hard drive that I want to copy all my pictures to. I will use this drive as my main source, I also have an external drive that I backup to. So I need to completely move all my pictures from my OS drive to this new drive. The problem with just copying them over is when I re-import them into LR I won't have the edits that I have already done on the pictures. How can I move all the files and get LR to update the edits to the new locations? I hope that makes sense, plesae help me out if you know how.

Polarzing and GND Filter Questions

I'm not sure what the problem is, but my circular filter works great. I don't want to sound like I'm asking an obvious question, but did you try turning it? As you turn it you will change the affect from basically not even noticeable to very strong. It also works best when the sun is to your left or to your right. I have never used a linear one so I don't know how it works at all, so I can't compare the two. I just know I haven't had any problems with my circular filter. I also heard that you have to have circular when it comes to the polarizer, but I don't know how true that is since I haven't tried both.

There is also a LR update as well that adds support for the new cameras too. The updates don't do much beyond adding new camera support, looks like a printer driver and some leapord support too.

I shoot Av almost all the time, I switch to M for specific shots, or if the EV compensation isn't large enough to let me get the exposure I want on Av.

How did you get photomatix for free? I would love to have that one. Yes CS2 can do it, but I have heard it isn't all that good. I use CS3 to do mine, and it does a decent job, although you can't get the really caroony looking shots like you can with photomatix, or artizen. BTW, I have heard artizen is much better than photomatix, most people use photomatix because it has been around for a long time.
