Ssshhhhh! They'll all want to come.;) I'm trying to divert them to Tassie.

Here's some mountain ash forest from the Strzelecki ranges in South Gippsland. Just a few trees. Who'd want to see that? And the biggest ones (measured at 110m+) were cut down in the 19th Century. Don't bother.;)

This little tomato flower will not produce my " future lunch " as it is too late in the season now.:( Started using a ring flash for my macro photography. This flower was in the shade and looked very flat and uninteresting without the flash. Thanks for taking a look.:)

I don't think I have posted any pictures in this thread...yet! And now I have two of a Godwin flyby. It used to be a very common bird in oud meadows en fields but their numbers have declined after farmers with government aid intensified the use of the land... Both with the DFA150-450. Shooting BIF's is a skill I have not mastered fully yet but these turned out allright. I must say that I am positively surprised by the ability to of this lens in combination with the K-3 to lock focus and produce a acceptable result. Both are slight crops.

Cheers, Remco

I posted this on another thread once but thought it might be of interest here where we are talking long glass.

A dinky Cape May Warbler taken across a small stream at about 70? feet. K5 at 560mm.

Tried an extreme crop - FF and crop.

Taken with a much cheaper 500mm achromat - requires a bit more PP to get it right.

Photography has been on the backburner for awhile since selling and buying a house.
Went out this morning and found my arch nemesis but wish I would've had my tripod for a sharper photo.

Here are some shots from today. Top shot of Bald Eagle with clear eye and then shot of Bald Eagle with nictitating membrane closed. Nice to see the cropping ability of K-1.
Some birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and mammals have three eyelids – two similar to ours, and a third translucent or transparent eyelid, called a nictitating membrane. This membrane moves horizontally from the inside corner to the outer edge of the eye, much like a windshield wiper, when needed for protection, to clear debris, or to moisten the eye.

Shot with K-1 and SMC 500mm f/4.5

Normal clear eye

And now with nictitating membrane closed. You can see the veins in it.

smc PENTAX 1:4.5 500mm

Based on entries in the PF Serial Number Database this is likely a mid- to late-90's manufactured lens.

After many years of looking I have acquired a really nice copy of the classic manual focus Pentax 500mm extreme tele, from a Forum member. This one is the K version with the bayonet rear mount tube, 128mm 'dinner plate' front and K-mount rear caps and OEM case.

I once owned a copy of the M42 version that had the mount tube hacked to Nikon bayonet through a T - to Nikon adapter. I bought it from another member after he had queried the membership (very early posts in the 300mm+ lens club) for assistance figuring out how to K-mount it. Years later I acquired the very lens, but sold it on to a local shooter who really wanted it.

There was a story floating around the web (gone now) that in 1971 AP had 50 of their Asahi Takumar 500's modified by their internal technician when they switched from Pentax to Nikon. I have enjoyed imagining I owned one of those for a while.

Now I have the real deal.

Tony Northrup - K-1 Review

To be honest, if you look at where Tony Northrup is coming from, it's pretty fair comment - people making a buying decision who are familiar with other brands but not with Pentax will not immediately see all the things we see as being great about Pentax, and in the end what did he say? Pentax range of modern FF lenses isn't the best - we know that. Pentax AF isn't the best - we know that . What Pentax set out to do with this camera - make a great 'field camera' - they succeeded in superbly - I hope we know that. Even the comparing of new with old is fair from that point of view. Yes he missed a few things and yes he reviewed it in terms of how it suited his personal style, but I really don't think he was wilfully or actually unfair or biased. He was as unstinting with praise where deserved as with criticism where deserved - that's his style, and I prefer it to - find it more useful than - gushing over something or being more interested in yourself than what you're reviewing. I think he works hard, and I respect his opinions, even when I don't agree with them.
