It is a solid little camera and could not be simpler to use. A battery is only required to run the LED meter. Without them, you can use a hand held meter or shoot using sunny 16?

He replaced the meter on my Spotmatic SP II along with giving it a CLA. It now works like brand new. Next up is my K1000 for a CLA and re-cover in red calfskin. ☺

I have the Pentax-F 35-70mm and it is a great lens! If you are mounting one to a K1000, you might want to pick up the "A" version, which I hear is optically identical?

I know this is an old thread, but the SLR I like (after first shooting in 1980 with a Yashica GSN rangefinder) is the Ricoh XR-7. Yes, it needs a battery to function, but it is a great camera. It has an electronically-controlled shutter that ranges from 16 secs to 1/1000. More info can be found in this thread:

I bought one of these on eBay that looked immaculate... The problem was that batteries had been left in the battery compartment and had leaked everywhere. I got most of it cleaned up fairly well, but one of the terminals at the far end still looks a bit dirty/corroded. Would this be enough to keep it from focusing correctly, even with fresh batteries? Or is it more likely that acid has leaked outside of the battery compartment into the focusing/motor housing and is causing other problems? It will hunt for focus about 6 out of 10 presses on the focus button. Sometimes it will get close to in-focus, sometimes not. But, it never seems to be spot-on and always looks a bit off on the fresnel and split-image screens. I've got it installed at the moment on a Ricoh XR-S that I also recently picked up on eBay. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
