Quite true!

We also need more round tuits.

Lerts can spot problems quickly but they won't fix them until they get a round tuit! ;)

 Yep! I'm alive and well! Thanks everyone for your concern. My apologies for not stopping in daily like I have in the past. I'm a Moderator on another forum, and with "virus" threads, we have all but been glued to our computers, in order to keep the peace.

I'm getting ready to move all my seedlings that I have in the house out to the greenhouse, but that will wait for a few days; under a bad winter storm warning; up to 10" of snow here.

Again everyone, sorry for my absence, and I'm so thankful I have such great friends here!

Everyone, please stay safe!

My orphan squirrel "Pip", dedicated to Rupert

As a Moderator I occasionally had runins with Rupert - I'm sorry but being old, grumpy and generally over the hill means that I'm afraid there was a limit to the amount of squirrel postings I could handle in any one day period :). But, a couple of years later, I find myself in the supremely ironic position of having been adopted by a 5 week old orphan baby squirrel, which I'm hand-rearing until it is old enough to make its own way into the world. 10 days in she's doing fine, on a diet of rehydration liquids, puppy baby milk formula, nuts, veggies and bread, living in my photostudio with a microwavable hot water bottle as mummy. She's incredibly smart - learned to use the hamster water dropper thingie within one day. Incredibly endearing, whenever I take her outside to get used to that great big warm yellow thing in the sky she comes running straight at me and buries herself under my jumper. Meet "Pip" (name courtesy of my daughter). Rupert, this one's on you :)

I wonder if the industry is just pandering to it's perceived photo base rather like a politician panders to it's political base - pandering keeps them in business.

I think the kids are spot on. They know what "photography" means to them and, much to the chagrin of the industry, it's not a clumsy, bloated, complex DSLR with 2000 bucks worth of glass rattling around in a camera bag. I only wish the industry would get it and get on with designing real, practical, shooters gear optimized for those of us who are serious about available light still photography.

Weekly Challenge Picture of The Week (POTW) 400 - April 24-30, 2016

This week has so many superb photos!

I've not participated in POTW in a long time, mainly because of the press of work, but also because I've been so lazy in processing photos in the week I shot them. But seeing as it's a milestone edition of POTW -- #400! -- and to thank Stu for his valiant efforts to keep this venerable weekly event going, I thought it worth getting my backside in gear to take part. All these were taken with my Pentax K5-IIs and Pentax-M 28/2.8 manual lens.

A challenging location to shoot, but a promising one full of potential, this dark reach of river is studded with river potholes. In the foreground there's a pothole -- in gneiss, if you like knowing that kind of thing -- about the size of a pickup truck tire. That crusty light-colored tinge on the rock is dried algae, a relatively recent occurrence, which in shade always appears a bit blue:

The same pothole from a higher vantage point:

Though the sun doesn't manage to hit the water here in many places, the sun-lit tree canopy high above the river is reflected. My M-28/2.8 produces very blue photos in shade, but even this is as close to the colors as I remember them:

In another place, I'm never able to pass this convoluted ledge drop without shooting some photos. The sun doesn't hit the spot directly but here, either, but the waves reflect the tree tops. And at this water level, the flow is always glassy as it makes this little step down.

Ooh great stuff here! Nice work.

I took advantage of National Park week and went to my nearest park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison for free for the full moon rise.
I found it challenging to frame a shot that included the dark hole in the ground and the bright ball in the sky.

How to judge camera reviews

+1.

I mostly assume any camera made today will take pictures far beyond my abilities so I'm just interested in things that are hard to quantify. Like how does it fit in my hand, are the buttons responsive and placed well. Beyond that kind of stuff, well if an extra 1/2 stop of DR is important to you then I guess look at the technical reviews. For me I'll never be good enough to see the difference anyway.

The business of Adobe cloud subscriptions

No one takes what the other isn't giving willingly, otherwise it would be illegal.

Here's the deal... if you don't like it, no one's holding a gun to your head; just say no.

I added it up... $150.00 for Lightroom and $600.00 more or less for Photoshop comes to $750.00 to get me roughly the same functionality I'm getting with the subscription at $120.00 per year. So, 750/120 = 6.25; it would take more than 6 years for me to break even and in the meantime my subscription is being updated regularly so I always have the most recent version and I have it installed on 2 computers which I don't believe you can do with standalone versions. In fact I can install it on more computers if I like, I just have to log out of one first. So to my thinking it's far from a one way street. I believe I'm getting my money's worth and more. As always, others may have a different view. "Opinions are like ********, everyone has one, and they all stink."

Wedding photography.. lenses? Gear?

If you're a people person and like weddings, you can be a wedding photographer. Gear has little to nothing to do with it - a good wedding photographer knows where and WHEN to be. That's far more important than gear.

You don't have any Pentax gear?

A Nightmare Turned Into a Fairy Tale...

Hopefully that title isn't too dramatic, but I think it aptly describes a recent experience of mine.

My brother got married this weekend, and while I wasn't the official photographer, I had a pretty great vantage point and got a few once-in-a-lifetime shots. I stayed up late the night of the wedding and the next night, working on the photos in Lightroom. I worked out a new look for these photos and hit a good stride, so close to midnight I was toiling away on my laptop, using the brush, when my laptop just died. Apparently my battery wasn't actually charging even though the laptop was plugged in, and rather than powering down, my laptop just completely lost power.

When I turned it back on, Lightroom wouldn't open the catalog with the wedding photos. It wouldn't open ANY catalog. After a bit of research, I discovered that updating the Preference file in the registry would prompt Lightroom to open and allow me to choose a catalog, and it was at that point that I realized that the wedding catalog was corrupt.

All of my photos were safe, but the work I'd done - things that were new to me and were painstakingly done - all of that was gone. Or so I thought. I found an old thread from a different forum (seriously, it was from 2012) that mentioned the name of an Adobe worker who could work magic with corrupt catalogs. I sent off an email to him, hoping he was alive and that he hadn't changed email addresses. Another person knew someone at Adobe. I sent her a message through Facebook. Within 12 hours, I had the catalog back to me, uncorrupted and fixed! And a couple of hours after that, I had another offer from an Adobe employee to fix it for me. All for nothing in return besides my effusive thanks.

So that's the fairy tale. In an age where you hear so many discouraging stories about companies and individuals, this story had a great ending. So to Dan Tull of Adobe and Victoria "The Lightroom Queen" Bampton...you guys saved the day!

I use a lowepro microtrekker which holds 2 bodies, a 70-200/2.8 a 28-75/2.8 and a 10-20.

The only issue I have and thins is an issue with all small bags, is the straps. The shoulder straps and hip/waist strap come off the body of the pack, and since the body is small, you can have the shoulder and chest straps correctly placed, with the waist strap around your stomach, or the shoulder straps lengthened to have the waist strap on your hips where it should be, but then no padding on your shoulders, and the chest strap around your neck.

The issue with all small packs really is they lack a proper harness arrangement.

Pentax dslr: apsc costs more than one stop (relative to full frame)

Internet misinformation like that just makes things harder to understand for beginners.

Crop factor is an irrelevance. People who regularly switch between different formats will be aware of differences in angle of view and depth of field from personal experience. People who only ever use one format don't need to worry about it.

The assertion that, say, a 50mm f/2.0 lens on "full frame" would become a 75mm f/3.5 lens on APS-C is just plain wrong. It would still be a 50mm/2.0 no matter what camera it was mounted on. The f-stop is the ratio between the lens's focal length and physical aperture size, and using the lens with a different sensor size doesn't change that.

The notion that manufacturers should advertise their lenses with maximum f-stop values based on depth of field rather than exposure is simply moronic.
