Help with what lens to obtain for K5IIs

Hi , the Pentax K5IIs sensor delivers such high resolution that any zoom will be easily outperformed ( buy a cheap new K 5 or K5II to match if you consider zoom ) something like Sigma EX 70mm F2,8 Macro ( annexed tests taken with this lens ) or Pentax FA 35mm F2 AL , excellent image quality , more suitable for family shots , low-light , works similar to a "normal" lens on 24x36mm format . Good luck .

Mirrorless vs DSLR? What are the advantages?

Logically , by diverting some 15-30% of the light provided by the lens would the image on the sensor be exacly the same quality as with a an optical viewfinder ? The answer is NO , you loose some 15% in image quality , and this is not something that adds will tell you , they only talk about the advantages ... Secrets of the Sony A55
No problem as long as Pentax has the OVF K-5 in it's line-up , a parallel EVF with 15% loss of image quality at a low price could be a nice entry-level camera , nothing wrong with that as long as you know what you are buying .

Eddie1960 :
"What makes you so certain that they couldn't fit it in a K-5 body ? ..."

By looking at this The Guts: Sony A850, A900 Image Stabilization | Popular Photography I imagine that it would be ( very ) difficult , plus the necessary space for a larger OVF as you mentioned and then the whole concept of a low-price , as simple as possible and robust and compact FF would be lost . It wouldn't be neither simpler nor low-cost anymore , it would be a Pentaxsony 900 . My point was that most
serious pentaxians already have a very good APS-C camera with Shake Reduction ( and video if we refer to the K-5 ) so a "stripped down" K-(5) FF with even better image quality would be a perfect complement to the system , would'n imply massive investment in a new chassi and you could even use the same battery grip...
It would be the perfect "combo" which would make everybody else jealous and would nicely fit the gap ( no sense denying there is one Pentax...) between K-5 and 645D . Canon and Nikon are making expensive FF monsters and Sony , being what they really are , an electronics company , have started making electronic "things" . In this context Petax should remember what they primarily are , an innovative PHOTOGRAPHIC company and act accordingly .

Philbaum :

"I also think that just following along on the heels of Canikon and Sony FF cameras is not going to be a successful bid - unless they do something different with the FF sensor. Make the camera stand out in some way.
Eliminate the mirror for sure, and stuff it in a K5 size body. It would be smaller than any other FF out there and likely cheaper. Keep the K mount."

Correct Philbaum , I agree that this would be a reasonable approach , but could Pentax fit in a FF sensor in a K-5 body with the Shake Reduction Module attached to it ? No , so you have to choose , either a K-5 APS-C with SR or a modified K-5 with FF sensor but without Shake Reduction . I myself find SR in my K20D inefficient so it stays on "OFF" all the time so an affordable K-(5) FF , simple , robust and providing higher image quality would be me decision if I were the boss of Ricoh . Fortunately I am not ...

How about APS-H ?

There is , as "fstdslrkx" pointed out , the annoying problem of finding a suitable APS-H sensor ... If Samsung or Kodak would not develop a APS-H sensor just for the fun of it than renounce the shake reduction module , compensate it with a secondary "eye blinking shutter trigger" and use Sony 24MP FF in a K-5/K-7 chassi . You cannot have everything affordable at the same time and FF should be targetet at very advanced prosumers / professionals who know what a tripod looks like , as for the rest there already is an excellent affordable APS-C camera with SR , isn't there ?

Worth reading this , you'll be completely illuminated or plunged in total dakness ... My point was that an upgraded K-5 with a APS-H 20MP sensor should cost a lot less than a newly developped FF and there would be considerable improvement of the image quality . And the real professional photographers can afford Pentax 645 D to compete with top of the line Nikons and Canons and Sonys .

I have to agree with Clavius that a 20MP APS-H sensor would make more sense than a 24MP FF sensor ( we wouldn't be able to distinguish between results from the two with the naked eye anyway ) , the camera would be affordable and many of the current Pentax lenses could be used , both arguments meaning that no massive FF investment in the near future would be necessary , I for one would be quite happy with a K-5 / K-7 body with a APS-H 20MP sensor inside ... I don't mean that a "blinking eye shutter trigger" is for sure better than in camera shake reduction ( just give it a try Pentax Ricoh Imaging Company , that's all ) but if I had to choose between a 20MP sensor and the SR module in a K-5 body ( Pentax K-2 ? ) I would rather have the larger sensor and the extra image quality . Others may disagree of course but wouldn't then K-5 suit them perfectly ?

How about APS-H ?

There is less competition in the APS-H range than either the APS-C or FF crowded world . Another "set of equivalent focal lenght" isn't necessarily a bad thing , on the contrary , if you own both an APS-C and an APS-H camera there would be more flexibility provided one knows what his intention is in the first place ( or buy a 17-300mm F6,3-9,5 zoom instead , but then the addeed image quality of a 20MP sensor would be useless ...) .
Blinking WITH BOTH EYES is a natural reflex which induces far less muscular tension than pushing the conventional shutter trigger and would become useful at , let's say , 1/25 - 1/5 s . And I don't mean replacing the shutter trigger button but the shake reduction system which is bulky and inneficient ( 1 EV Falk Lumo: Pentax shake reduction revisited ) where it is most needed at longer focal range . It may be so that even a FF sensor would fit in a Pentax K-5 / K-7 body without the shake reduction mechanism ( I am not an engineer to calculate that but there must be somebody at Pentax or Ricoh able to do it ...) . So how about a FF 21-24MP sensor in the K-5 / K-7 body at a reasonable price , wouldn't it be lovely ?

Regarding the effectivenes of the SR in Pentax K-7 there is a well documented study showing that where it is most needed ( 100mm - 200mm ) it's just helping by 1 EV , which I think would be easily matched by a "viewfinder blinking shutter trigger" since you don't even touch the camera with the eye just support it without applying any force on any part of the camera :
Study of the Effectiveness of Shake Reduction in the Pentax K7
If this is true than by removing the SR module ( which is quite large Pentax K-5 Camera - Full Review ) a quite larger sesor , 20MP , maybe more , woult fit in the K-7 / K-5 body which means that in theory you could drastically improve image quality in an existing body with negigleble development cost so such a "stripped down" 20MP APS-H "K-2" camera should cost much less than a newly developped Pentax Ricoh FF . Makes sense to me .

By implementing the "blinking shutter" the shake reduction system would no longer be needed thus making room for a larger sensor than APS-C in today's Pentax K5 / K7 body . So the cost of this intermediate sensor camera should be closer to Pentax K-5 ( but with a 20 MP sensor sufficient for professional image quality ) than to a newly developed FF and Pentax would have kept it's promise not to give us a FF camera ... Lots of advantages , no disadvantage , plus the glory of being the first introducing a new feature in the DLSR market ! Go for it Pentax Ricoh Imaging Company , nothing to loose , a lot to be gained , don't mention my giving you the idea , you're welcome !

Why not a medium sized APS-H senzor 18-21MP , wouldn't it be sufficient for professional image quality ? I bet it would , then there will be full compatibility with all K lenses , Limited and especially DA* lenses , the camera could be made more compact and cheaper and there is a huge gap in the market there , lots of advantages ...
And a second shutter trigger connected to the viewfinder so you could take the picture by blinking ( has to be activated by a dedicated button of course ) would help taking photos at incredible low shutter speeds , no other competitor offers that and it could replace shake reduction .
