Two other no suggestions for excellent FF wide angle lenses, all MF (but who needs AF on wide angles ?)
- Laowa 15/4 macro : a unique wide angle macro 1:1, very compact, takes 77mm filters, shift capacity on APS-C. This one is.always in my bag.
- Irix 11/4 : the widest rectilinear wide angle, very sharp, a bit heavy

It is good to know you appreciate your MX-1 so much, a camera appeared in 2013. It is comparable to the Q7 in term of sensor, although it has a higher resolution LCD screen.
Anyway, a good camera remains a good camera and Pentax excels in giving the "je ne sais quoi" touch that makes users in love with their camera.
Thanks for sharing and preciously keep your enthusiasm for converting it into excellent pictures !

K-3 II extreme motion blur

On my K-1, I configured the "tile menu" with focal length adjustment in one tile. I guess I forgot to adjust it when I put my 15mm manual lens. Or I made a mistake during adjusment because 1600mm is a few steps before 15mm. Anyway, the 1600mm appeared in the EXIF so my explanation is not correct in your case. If the EXIF indicates 53mm, it is a reasonable value for a 16-85mm and the IBIS should not vibrate like that. Strange behaviour...

Hi, Roquefort

I had exactly the same problem on my K-1 with my 15mm manual Laowa lens. Everything fuzzy. I discovered later that the focal length was adjusted for 1600mm by error ! In this case, IBIS over-compensates the smallest vibration by huge sensor motions and it makes a fuzzy photo.
You did not indicate the lens you used. In your EXIF, it is mentioned 53mm. I guess you have a zoom lens. Is it a A/F/FA/DFA or a manual one ?

For an A lens or later, if the mount is dirty and the contacts do not transmit the correct focal length, it could explain your problem.
For a K or M lens, you must adjust the focal lens manually and you should check the input value.

Good luck

C mount q adapter variations?

I think they are basically similar C-mount adapters, but with a one inch thread (=25mm) and mostly used for 16mm film camera lenses. The terminology are ambiguous. But the second adapter is better built, as it allows to reorient the angle of the lens for having the writings on the top, thanks to an adjustable ring held by three pressing screws. The first one does not have this property, but is probably lighter. It depends on your need.
Sincerely

Hi. This is an interesting fact. My point was to say that all recent industrial vision lenses use C/CS mount and no more D-mount lenses are manufactured, to my knowledge.

C mount q adapter variations?

Hi

25mm/16mm: I guess you are referring to the diameter of the thread ?
You have tons of nice camera lenses that can be adapted to the Q bodies

D mount (thread diameter of approx 16mm)
This mount is mostly used for old 8mm / Super 8mm video cameras.
The mount is described here : D mount - Wikipedia
Some nice lenses can be found, mostly for focals longer than 12mm.
Most of the wide angles produce vignetting, even on the small sensor of the Q, and even worse on Q7/QS1
The cheapest adapter I could find on Ebay can be found below
D mount 8mm movie lens to Pentax Q PQ P/Q Digital Camera Adapter Q7 Q10 Q-S1

C-mount (1 inch thread diameter):
This is a more recent mount used on 16mm vintage cameras/lenses and also for recent industrial vision lenses.
Obviously, the larger diameter with respect to D-mount allows less vignetting and better fitting to the Q7/QS1 line.
The mount is described here: C mount - Wikipedia
The cheapest adapter on Ebay is here :
Lens Adapter For C Mount to Pentax Q Q-S1 Q10 Q7 | eBay
This adapter has the advantage of allowing to adjust the rotation of the lens around its axis, so the top writing of the lens can be effectively on the top.
Beware of the confusion between C and CS mount, that have the same diameter but different registration distances (CS have a shorter distance). No adapter exist for CS lenses on Pentax Q, except if you drill a 25mm thread into a D-mount adapter and add a suitable spacer, which requires a lathe.
So double check to buy real C-mount lenses for your QS1. CS lenses are mostly cheap plastic things that can be found on recent vision cameras. C lenses are generally more substantial, often with a metal body.

You can have a look at the (really) long thread "adapted-lenses-tested-q-reference-thread"
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/136-pentax-q/209474-adapted-lenses-tested...ce-thread.html

One of the very best C-mount lenses I can recommend to you are the cute Swiss Kern-Paillard lenses, particularly the 16mm, that are gorgeous. And also most of the Fujinon are pure marvels. Some Pentax/Cosmicar are also nice. The Kowa are also of very high optical quality.

Enjoy your time and welcome to the world of C-mount lenses for Q.

To prime 200mm or zoom to 200mm?

Dear AmaZing

Given the fact that most of the people buy a 70-200 for using it at 200, is it really useful to carry a big zoom ? If you are a birder, I guess you are also in this category (to which I belong).
The DFA* 70-200 is more than twice the mass and 70mm longer than the DA*200. Think of your future use. Will you really want to add a 1.7kg lens in your bag, particularly for hiking ?
For me, the DA* 200 has an incredible quality for a super compact format. It fits in my small bag, with a 17-50 2.8, a 100 macro and my precious 10-17 fish-eye.
I made great portraits with my DA*200 on my K-5 because I can be out of the field of vision of the people that I photograph. So their attitude is very natural.
Another advantage is that the minimum focusing distance of this lens is only 1.2m, good for proxi-photo.

For birding, the DA*200 is probably too short on APS-C, but it is a great companion for an inexpensive Q (1120mm equivalent focal) or Q7 (900mm equivalent) body.

The DA*300 is probably a tiny bit better in term of image quality because the DA*200 may be prone to blooming.
Pentax SMC DA* 200mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM - Review / Test Report - Analysis
But the DA*300 is a big beast and the DA*200+1.4x converter provides a more flexible solution.

Now it is up to you to think of your need.
Hope it helps

SIncerely

It is strange that no one mentions this lens as a super wide full frame option
LAOWA 15mm f/4 Wide Angle 1:1 Macro Lens | Venus Optics - Anhui ChangGeng Optical Technology Company Limited

It is super sharp with low aberration (except a bit of distortion).
Most of all, it is the only one to provide true immersive macro: be prepared to bring the object at 1mm of the front lens at 1:1 macro !
It accepts 77mm filters, contrary to some bulbous zooms. A polarizer can change your landscape!

It works marvelously well on the K-1 and super nicely on the K-5, with an additional shift function on APS-C. The lacking AF is acceptable at such short focals.

And all of this for $500 brand new.

Dear All

I confirm the SD problem of pony97 described in p.8 of this thread

I had planned to use a pair of Kingston SDA3 128Gb SD cards that are fast (80 Mb/s write) and inexpensive
SDHC/SDXC UHS-I U3 Card - 16GB-512GB | Kingston

I first inserted one single card into slot 1 and formatted with the Settings>Format option of the menu. The formatting happened nicely.

But since then, after each shot, the buffer led blinks orange for a super-long time (between 6 and 10 seconds for one single PEF). The picture can be seen in instant display.
But when I try to display the picture by pressing the Play button, an error message appears on a black screen saying "This image cannot be displayed".
I have to switch the camera off and on, then go to Play for displaying the image. This means the image is recorded, but probably very slowly.

I noticed that this problem does not occur when I use only one SD card in slot 2. In this case, the camera runs smoothly and the buffer led never blinks more than 2-3 seconds per PEF image.

The cards also seem to work flawlessly and at full speed when used in a USB3 card reader.
I suspect a SD card compatibility or SD slot issue. The fact that the same card works differently in slot 1 and 2 is strange.

This problem happened with firmware 1.00 and still happens with v1.10.

For pony97: slot2 is your friend :-) You should try it.

Let's wait for a firmware update.

Dear All

Thanks for the informative post. This Samyang looks like a killer lens. The Lenstip review clearly states that its minor weakness is only vignetting.
There are also beautiful samples of the Pentax version on Pentaxians.de

I wanted to share this very low price of the Pentax version on Amazon UK.
Only £304 and free shipping to UK or 434€ including shipping to France !!!
A real bargain. OK, I ordered the last one today but a new batch is supposed to arrive at this price soon. Let's be patient now :-)

Hope it helps

Thanks for this nice article about LBA or the more general GAS syndrome. What is fun is that the writer is trying to convince himself. So its preaching becomes acceptable and even touching. Discussing and exchanging with non-photographer friends also helps to realize how unsane and greedy LBA can make us. Cheers!

Here is a test of the Lensbaby fisheye (in French)

Test Lensbaby Circular Fisheye 5,8 mm f/3,5 - Focus Num

It appears to be sharp at f8. The brilliant ring around the picture is supposed to be a feature. The paper also notes a problem with decentered picture. As the test was made on a Nikon D300, it cannot be sensor shifting 😀. Overall, a nice inexpensive ultra-wide focal. Enjoy

Yes, good question. I guess it is only useable for static objects, with a tripod. If the K3 exceeds 8 fps, I suppose shifting the sensor can be quasi-instantaneous, so probably a picture like this could be taken in less than 1s. If the mirror is left up during the exposition of the four shifted shots. Only tests will show, probably...
However, it is good to see Pentax experimenting novelties and taking advantage of their proprietary expertise.

Good to know that it helped.
Perhaps may you find an inexpensive 08 on Yahoo Auction (Japanese site). The 08 is mostly worthy as a companion for the Q7.
It you have a Q, you may also find Chinese C-mount wide angle lenses covering 1/2 inch sensors, which would cover the 1/2.3 inch Q sensor. I had great time with a 2.8-12mm f/1.8 lens bought on on Aliexpress.com for $60 shipping included. It had a 2 megapixel resolution and I made many photos from Bulgaria with it. The resolution was correct, however with chromatic aberration and a blue cast easy to correct in RAW. The focusing was very very delicate to achieve. The 2.8mm focal length and very short focusing distances are a must for the Pentax Q. Unfortunately, I could not re-find the place where I bought it. The dealer disappeared.

Attached samples below. It is a fish-eye!

Thanks for the interesting information, reh321.
I had a look on Pentax CCTV product catalog.
Security Lens | Industrial Products | Ricoh
You can find there a 3-8mm f/1.0 lens, but it covers only a 1/3 inch diagonal sensor. The sensor of the Pentax Q is bigger (1/2.3) and Q7 has an even bigger one (1/1.7). So it means the lens will not cover the sensor (vignetting). Additionally, carefully check the lens is not a CS mount, because the registration distance is much shorter for CS than for C mount, and commercial adapters are only for C.
C mount - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Overall, it would deeply surprise me if you coul find a bright 3mm capable to cover the Q7 sensor. My recommendation could be the Pentax 4.8mm f/1.8, which is good and with fix focus. But the 08 is a cute autofocus ultra-wide lens with few equivalents. After intensive research, I finally bought one because I could not find any equivalent in industrial vision lenses. A cheaper solution can be to buy it new on Amazon.jp and import it with Buynippon.com. But the 08 is an expensive (and excellent) lens. Good luck for your quest.

Thank you for this very interesting and extensive test. I guess it took you several hours !

Your test confirms my feelings when using Q and Q7. The Q pictures are nice and can be improved in post-processing. But Q7 directly creates sharp and contrasty pictures with moderate noise, even at 1600 ISO.

I remember a time when my K10D at 1600 ISO could not even dream of such a performance !

New uses for quick dial

So let's start.

Here is my first idea : I shoot a lot with fast manual zooms that do not have electric contacts. So I have two choices :
- either adjust once the focal length in the menu with the shortest value -> but stabilization will be less efficient with long focals
- either change the focal length each time I adjust the focal on the lens -> what a hassle !

The idea would be to have four customizable values of the focal length for the dial. Ideally, I would just have to type the minimal and the maximal focals and the Q would interpolate the two other values. Say, for instance that I use a 10-100mm. I would type Min=10, Max=100 and the Q would understand that
- Position 1 if 10mm
- Position 2 is 40mm
- Position 3 is 70mm
- Position 4 is 100mm
Ideally, positions 2 and 3 could be interpolated automatically but could be customized afterwards if required. It may be nice to make correspond the position to the marks indicated for focal length on the lens (for instance : 35mm)
In the best of the worlds, several configurations could be defined for easy retrieval in case of lens change.

Tell me what you think of it...
