AF speed watch.....dedicated speed thread

Given the fact that the new AF system is contrast detect based, I would be VERY surprised if it is truly good enough for action pictures.

The only mirrorless system with that kind of AF speed is Nikon 1. It uses phase detect while the light is good, then contrast detect - and, of course, as soon as the light goes down its edge in AF speed disappears. The fastest contrast detect AF system I have tried, used on the latest Olympus PEN cameras, uses 120 Hz focusing on contrast detect, and is still not fast enough for many action pics, for instance kids in motion within 15 ft of the shooter.

Spotmatic and M42 lenses

Congrats on the Spotmatic! M42 lenses can be really amazing. Even the early ones can have great optical properties, but the SMC Tak range also has excellent coatings - earlier versions can be subject to flare. Still, that is very controllable with a decent hood and some care in framing.

If your Spotmatic is an early version and is not functional, you might want to get an F model in decent shape, the model is quite superior to early Spotmatics, and it is cheap to find. Avoid ES models which can have metering issues.

Pentax K-5 or Sony A580 for baby pictures

Daffy- congrats on the baby!

I understand the A77 is not in your budget. Did you have a look at the A65? Significantly cheaper with pretty much same performance, small, lighter (but not magnesium).

K-x? K-r?

Pentax has been taking its time to fix focus issue, but now that (1) the K-x is discontinued and (2) Pentax has just been bought again, I am starting to think they will never fix it. I have been waiting since Feb to see them fix the focus issue on the K-x before purchasing one - I am pretty much ready to quit and look at something else. Have you considered the Sony A65? Great IQ (in my opinion), will take all your M42 lenses and can shoot faster than the K-x.

Have been lurking for a long time... I have a Spotmatic F and an ES-2, several Chinon boxes (CE-II, CE-III, CS), and a fairly good collection of SMC Taks, Chinon and Sears (mostly Ricoh) lenses, all M42s.
