Change bitrate for Pentax video mode?

DSLRs are much better than video cameras at the same price range. (Excluding Black Magic offerings of course)

Anyway, while the Canons and Panasonics are capable of quality good enough for the big screen, Pentax barely offers good enough for broadcast. That's my only issue.. Do they really want to be that behind on video? Unlike Canon/Panasonic/Sony, they have nothing to lose by making an awesome video recorder of a DSLR. Magic Lantern recently hacked the 5D to record RAW at 24fps, if Pentax had this a standard or even better, ProRes, then without a doubt videographers will be jumping on. The only issue that would concern them is the K Mount.

Got a reply on my email guys

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your e-mail and your feedback regarding the video operation of the Pentax K-5. While we are just the UK office and do not have any control over the development or release of firmware, we are fortunate in that we have short reporting lines back to the factory. This means requests and suggestions from consumers are easily feedback for consideration.

I will pass your comments to the factory and let you know of their response.

If you would be willing to share your thoughts about what other features may be developed I would be very interested to read them and pass them onto the factory also. Although we cannot guarantee any would be developed we do know that they would be considered. Other suggestions from consumers have been adopted and are now available on current cameras.

Kind regards,

Steve

Nice to know Pentax UK is open to listening to us.

In any case, should we compile a formal list of suggestions and a petition from users who show interest?

Haha very true :p, but if they added the manual control to the K5 I think it would be in line with the competition, its pretty good codec imo.

You should add that they should let you change iso and aperture while recording. I think they'd be the first to do that :p

Okay, so I sent an email to Pentax UK about bringing a firmware update to the K5 regarding the video mode and lack of manual control among a few other video related things. I got a reply today;

So I think we should do just that. I have made an online petition just so we can express how many users are showing interest for this so if you would like to welcome a more serious video mode please go ahead and sign here: Petition Pentax to improve video mode

Although I asked him mainly about updating the K5 I think we could add suggestions for future bodies.

The current suggestions I have gathered are as follows:
  • Full manual control of video. If possible, able to change ISO while recording like the GH3 does. (Also I hear the K01 only has manual control with auto aperture lenses? So manual control with all lenses would be good)

  • Possibly 60fps at 1080p

  • Pixel Binning to improve video quality mode (this also improves noise)

  • Focus Peaking during video

  • Better sound recording quality and proper audio control like in the K-01

  • Recording to ProRes/RAW (!)

  • Extra battery grip with XLR inputs (!)

  • Higher bitrates for K01/30 / Choice of MJPEG or H264 in camera

  • HDMI Output

Things with (!) next to them may be a stretch too far, the MJPEG in the K5 is much better quality than the H264 in the K01/30 even though it creates massive file sizes. I think its the only dslr codec that uses 4:2:2 subsampling as well. I would personally love to see a new mirrorless centered around video.

So, any thoughts?

Never been properly out to take photos, today was my first day. Went to Richmond Park in hope of finding some nice Red Deers, took me about an hour to get a glimpse of one which I followed and it led me to a whole herd of them! I didn't want to get too close because I've had no real experience with wild life. Let me know what you guys think and any tips that might help in future. Thanks :)

Why are you comparing just megapixels? Because I fail to see where else the D3200 would be better.

Since you think megapixels make a better camera, why would you get the D3200? When you can get a Nokia 808 which has 41 megapixels?! It doesnt make sense to me /sarc

The K30 has higher ISO, is weather sealed and shoots faster. Also have you seen samples from the D3200? I've seen some and they are horrible.:S

Pentax K-01 vs Fuji X-Pro 1 vs Olympus OM-D

Urm hello? I'm 16. The Pentax K-01 is atrocious. I told one of my friends about it, he looked at it and laughed. I don't know how young you mean. Maybe a toddler would pick up the K-01 instead, but everyone thinks the Fuji looks amazing. You Pentaxians just can't admit its a design fail. I mean its suppose to be made of aluminium yet its yellow? How classy.

Think realistically. In a shop the average user is not going to assume the Pentax is the camera to get, if the Olympus and Fuji were next to it I bet the sales of them would be somewhat 45% each to the Olympus and Fuji and 10% to the Pentax. They are all 16 Megapixel, average person assumes more is better, they are not going to go pixel peeping. If they pictures look good to them they're happy. Not even noise performance matters much..

Design wise, it just sucks really. We all know it has the K-5 Sensor so it will perform great, but that's really not enough if they want large sales. I don't see the problem in doing what Sony did and making a different mount and making an adapter for the current line up. I really don't think the K-01 will be a big seller outside of the Pentax community.

I mean I don't hear a lot of people are pre ordering the K-01. I'm hearing a heck of a lot about people pre ordering the Fuji. At the moment the Fuji is top of Amazons best sellers with the Pentax being 24th.

Wouldn't be surprised if Marc Newson's phone started getting cobwebs after this.

Fuji X-Pro1/Olympus OM-D > Pentax K-01

Seems to me the only people who are loving the Pentax are Pentaxians. I think the only reason its getting so much attention is because of its hideous looks, I mean even if Sigma made a yellow SLR I'd click to have a look.. I think they really missed the boat on this one. Retro design is loved, I don't think yellow cameras the shape of bricks are.. Except maybe in Japan..? :/
