Hey Sandy!
I work a lot in extreme cold environments with Pentax cameras (K-1). Last expedition I was on, I had a similar consideration to yours regarding weight and volume for transport and whilst I was out skiing.
What I discovered from a pre expedition trip was my goto lens was my FA 31mm on my K-1 body. Nothing else. I did carry the FA 77mm for a short tele, but only used it once. I used my feet instead. To be fair, I was in a place that allowed me to do that, no restrictions on where I could go (you won't have the same in Antarctica) except for if the terrain was dangerous. I was also photographing people and landscapes mostly, not wildlife or distant objects. I found 31mm was decent enough for wides (sometimes wish it was a little wider), a little close for portraits but delivered nice images. Only disadvantage, it's not weather sealed. But if it's cold enough it's dry, so you don't have to consider moisture other than when you try to go from a cold environment to a warm one. If you do this all of the moisture will stick to the camera and condense on it.
So for that you'll want either some zip-loc bags or a dry bag. Waterproof dry bags are more durable and reliable. You leave it in there until the camera temperature is raised to the warm environment. If you go from a warm environment to a very cold environment, it doesn't matter as sublimation usually takes care of moisture.
In truth if you had the option of the classic lens setup 24-70mm & a 70-200mm (or equivalent) you're covered for most. As riseform says you may wish to go longer if you're photographing birdsetc. I know you may have discounted the 24-70mm beacuse of weight but that range is incredible, if you need flexibility. Other than that your mostly in prime territory.
Couple of things I found really useful were the Peak Designs Capture Camera Clip (if the total weight of the camera + lens is not so high) - works great if you're wearing a backpack, and makes the camera very accessible. The metal body cameras like the K-1 are incredibly robust, and as a rule it's the battery that needs to be kept warm for the most part. You'd be surprised how cold they work down to....
I also took a travel USB battery charger for the Dli90, which meant I could take carry fewer electrical goods.Just a multi USB quick charger. You can also, recharge a battery from a solar panel or a battery pack.
Here's one from Siberia :)

Looking for one of these beauties the Voigtländer Color-Skopar 20mm F3.5. I'm far too impatient for a new Pentax prime. Would also consider the Pentax FA 20mm. If I have no joy finding one, I might have to purchase the Irix 15mm.
Thanks!

I couldn't. Switched over to mirrorless for a while (work), for the convenience with the weight. But I just miss the way Pentax handle. I've had pretty much every modern Pentax DSLR. The worst of it is, and I feel ashamed to admit it, but I had a K3ii last year very underutilised. But I've decided to go back to all Pentax, so I'm armed to the teeth now :) No excuses.

Hi Guys,
Been a long time since my last post but nice to be back. I'm happily shooting Pentax again as my main workhorse. Looking forward to sharing some images!

I loved using the K7, had one for years. I filmed a documentary with it at -30c to -40c, so I appreciated the weather sealing. Night filming was interesting, with having to shine a light in to the lens to get my desired shutter speed. Huge file sizes from the MJPEG and they'd crash a lot. Still a lot of fun.

Today is a great day! I've just taken delivery of a new K-3 ii, with 3 new lenses. Very happy indeed. A couple of years back I had to invest in Lumix, as I was doing a lot of combined videography and photography. Now I have the budget to get back in to Pentax as my stills workhorse. I've really missed working with Pentax cameras, to me they're just the most intuitive to use, so I don't mind if they're considered rarer than other cameras - feels like I know something others don't.

I honestly don't think Pentax are going to go FF. They're smarter than they appear! It's probably been said many times over but they just wouldn't be able to convert Canon/ Nikon users over. People are almost fanatical (to the truest sense of the word) about their camera gear. I have less concern over the small differences between APS-C and 35mm as much as I do between APS-C and MF.
I think it will be a technological advancement/ evolution in mirror-less technology like we are seeing. More accurate translations of the visible spectrum on to smaller chips more pixel packed chips, perhaps even different ways of seeing light ie infrared capable cameras.
Pentax may be bold but it may well be in what is the next generation of camera technology - in 10 years time who is going to be thinking about a 35mm sensor? We may well be on Large Format compact by then!
Good glass + good handling = Good pictures

I would definitely recommend hiking in Scotland I've been up there many times and I can say it's one of the most beautiful places on Earth! In answer to your question I used a CPL for most of the shots and and grad ND 0.4 (I think). I prefer working with filters than Photoshop when I can.
I'll post a few more up seeing as they are going down so well!

Thanks Slowpez,
I was thinking of upgrading my K7 body to the K5 but for landscapes it seems to add some interesting character to the shots.

It was quite an atmospheric part of the world so glad I captured that. The second image is one of my favourites because of that. The contrast is really well balanced.

Thanks! They certainly are. I spent about 8 weeks wandering around snapping away. I'm heading up to Arctic Norway next month for 5-6 months so hopefully I'll get some great landscapes and natural phenomena.

Hi Guys,
I've just picked up a mint condition Tamron 19AH but it doesn't have a lens collar/ mount.
I understand it's approximately 65/66mm collar that you need but I just wanted to be doubly sure before ordering!
Thanks,
Scott

Maybe there's a slight difference but this works well in low light situations, when the camera automatically ramps up the ISO. If you set this in the user mode to something more bearable you can reduce the noise on the recorded image.
As far as I was aware the same manual lens hack works from the K7 to the K5. On the K7 in user mode, once you have attached a manual lens you simply set option C>6>38 to use aperture ring '2' and from the user mode if you lock the settings they transfer through to the Movie mode.
Whoever discovered this was a genius!

Hey Guys,
I work a lot with manual lenses using the Pentax hack on a K7 for video work... so apologies for putting this in the K5 forum; locking the aperture settings, shutter, ISO etc from the User mode into the video mode. This may or may not be new but I think I have discovered a way of applying this fix to all automatic lenses.
Simply hold the AE-L button down, rather than pressing this once to lock it, whilst you turn the dial from User to Movie and voilà! The exposure is locked as soon as you hear the beep. I've tried it on 2 lenses multiple times and it works a treat!
This may or may not be new - I think it is and it has just opened the camera up for me a lot being able to use lenses with Autofocus and Automatic aperture control.
Hope this helps someone as much as it will help me!

Hey Dosdan,
Thanks for the speedy reply! I know, I know.... It's the left channel I meant to say not the right on closer inspection. Clear as a bell through the right channel mind you. It means removing the left channel in post which I can live with for one project :-( What id does mean though is that playback through say VLC or WMP has no audio because of the damaged left track.
Looks like a repair which is what I suspected and whilst it is under warranty it would be worth doing once the event is over. Thanks again!

Hi All,
I believe my camera (K7) has developed a fault but need my camera for some work in early January.... So no time to send for a repair! But before I do I'll provide a breakdown of the problem:
I have just bought the new Rode Videomic Pro which is a Mono Mic that has a stereo output. It records to the right channel fine, but not the left. Has anyone else experienced a problem such as this? I have tested the mic and both channels appear to be working.
I can (frustratingly) work with this for the next job I have but believe this to be a hardware fault with the unit - anyone else have a differing opinion?
Thanks for the help guys!
