Mine is certainly not as fast as the K1-II, but I think the Sony body (A7 II) is the bottleneck in my case.

Nice to see this lens get some appreciation. I remember how impressed I was with it from the outset. Earlier I had experienced the Sony A-700 with a kit lens so lousy that the body+lens combo was sold for less than the body only. That was realistic pricing.

Seems correct to me, judge for yourself (and yes, viewed on computer the orientation comes out right):

Actually this lens works quite well with the adapter. One of the best. I've tried it both with FW ver 3.0 and 4.0.

With the great lens line-up (considering all K-lenses) and the good layouts of menus and screens I still think it's a pity Pentax will not advance into the mirrorless sector. That is just about the only one with growth potential. The reasons are many. Among them the decline of car travel, which makes it essential to shrink your luggage and also your photo equipment.
Another is the vast selection of lenses available with adapters when you go to thinner bodies. Point in case: I own both of the bodies below, they produce images of roughly the same quality, but the one on the left takes only Pentax lenses and is hard and slow to use in manual focus, the one on the right takes every Pentax, Konica, Minolta and Konika-Minolta lens I own and it's a breeze to focus manually. Weight and bulk difference almost 2:1.
The only situations that keep me using the K-1 II from time to time is outdoor daylight photography, where the Sony EVF is not bright enough, or when AF is essential (I happen not to have any Sony FE-lenses yet).
Pentax might consider what the buyers value in future cameras. What the producers value is, frankly, less interesting.

Simple workaround (for the symptoms originally described) if the lens is outwardly undamaged: Switch on live view and try to focus there. It will take a minute or two of trying, then it springs to life, and after that it works also with PDAF. And it will work right away later today and tomorrow again.
If you leave it to sit for a week you may need to repeat the procedure.
So the good news is, this is not a sign the SDM will fail anytime soon. I've used mine this way for years already.
Why does it work this way? I don't know. But it does, very consistently.

Sirs,
I've been using the K-01 extensively for a special purpose, that is photocopying printed matter and photographs (mostly for my own personal archive). This is actually a very large photographic segment as the world is (still) in transition from a paperbased culture to a digital. The need for such cameras in archives and libraries is great.
The K-01 is very very good at this. It's light, it has snappy AF, it has a screen where the image is visible even when the M-settings suggest an underexposure (note, your DSLR:s don't) which is very important since this kind of photography is done with remotely controlled flashes. It has the option of remote control with or without AF, a good range of options for interval shooting (very important) and lastly it has controls for image aspect ratio, image size and image quality easily and extensibly adjustable. An important feature is the possibility of applying filters in interval shooting.
DNG ooc is also a great asset.
Now, just bringing the K-01 back into production would be great. Better still:
- with an improved sensor of about 24 mp without lowpass filter.
- with improved focus peaking (see Sony A7II) for using manual lenses
- with the horizontal adjustment indicators also made able to indicate when the camera is pointing straight down
- with an articulating screen. The K-1 model is great.
What you don't need to bother with is weather sealing, tracking or otherwise fancy AF (a large part of the image needs to be covered by AF, though) or extreme miniaturization of the body.
This should be possible with your existing technology and without any hard of costly policy choices.
Yours truly
ML

Not arguing at all, it's a nice lens and it's unique in that it's able to produce the same angle of view on APS-C and FF. But with good quality only around 19 mm on FF. The Vivitar I mentioned does 19-35 and it can be had for dirt cheap second-hand.

I works around 19 mm, corners may get a little fuzzy. Another option is a Vivitar Series 1 19-35 mm f3,5-4,5. Doesn't look like a quality lens but it actually holds it's own against the 12-24 and has a nicer bokeh.

Sorry, didn't notice the comments right away.
No, it was not moving, but the bus from which i shot it was. So there is a small blur.
It has most likely been repainted many times since about 1942 when probably was produced.
Nazi Germany produced these Series 52 locomotives to be used in the war effort, thus the nickname. When the Germans withdraw many were left behind in Eastern Europe, plus some taken from Eastern Germany as war reparations.
Seems to have been a real juggernaut because many are still running as museum locos.

The comparison is meaningful again now that there is a full-frame camera, so here's my fresh input:
– The Tokina is sharper, especially in the corners. In the dead centre, not so much difference
– The 19 mm of the Tokina actually seems to be 20 mm.
– You will get closer focus with the DA-J
– Both are rather soft at 35 mm.
– Both produce a lot of flare, and have a bluish cast.
– Neither one makes sense on APS-C. On the K-1 they make sense if you cannot for some reason (money or weight) carry along the DA 15-30 or FA 12-24.
– The build quality of the Tokina is much nicer. The DA-J is all plastic. Both are comparatively small and light.
– Focusing may need heavy correcting with the Tokina (mine needs fine adjustment -9)
Attached some comparative images - of the lenses, and the 12-24 for comparison, and one shot at 18/20 mm and f 5.6 with the DA-J (left) and the Tokina. Same scene, two months apart - sorry I can't make it simultaneously, since my DA-J is no longer operational.

Had already decided not to vote for one of the river/lake reflections when I came upon this. It's using the reflection fully to create an artistic illusion, it's simple and well composed. The only small improvement I would think of is correcting the horizon a tiny wee bit (but the edges are sensitive, I know).

Yeah, I did some more testing on the long zooms and found that focusing on infinity evens out the field. The "focus breathing" phenomena seems to reach up to some 30 feet with these lenses.
Still, it means that if you are into for example flowers or butterflies you should reach for the 200-mm DA 200 and not for the longer zoom, which will give you a smaller magnification at it's closest distance (tested that, too). And the Tamron also appears not to be affected by the focusing distance.
