I'm thinking about getting a K1 (not the Mark II), upgrading from a Nikon D750. Two questions about focusing:
1. Can you set up "Back-button Focusing?"
2. Can you easily select the focus point using the LCD screen in live view, then zoom in to check focus BEFORE you shoot?

Thanks. Downloaded the extended User Manual and studied the details of doing this. I shoot in Av mode, so I set the front eDial to adjust aperture while the rear eDial adjusts ISO. Works great, even w. the LCD screen turned towards the body for protection. I can see the adjusted ISO in the viewfinder. Thanks.

Nope. Looks like none of the four-way controller based settings can be adjusted w. the LCD screen facing the camera body.

Thanks, but that work-around doesn't seem to work on the K-70. With LCD screen turned towards the body and meter on, pressing the "OK" button doesn't seem to do anything when either eDial is used. Holding the "OK" button also doesn't seem to do anything.

Thanks Steve, but the procedure you laid out doesn't seem to work.
Tried it in the Av (Aperture Priority) mode, which I normally use, and also the AUTO and P modes. And a line never appears below the ISO setting in the viewfinder indicating it can be changed via an eDial. The only way I can achieve this is in Sv (Sensitivity Priority) mode, but then I lose control of the aperture & shutter speed settings which are being set automatically.
Also tried having ISO AUTO set initially, and then your procedure, but no luck.
Actually, it looks like none of the four-way controller dial settings can be altered w. the LCD screen closed towards the camera body. Looks like I need to come up with another work-around.
Even w. an LCD protector installed, the screen is going to get smashed eventually shooting one-handed from all the action in a moving kayak. Rapidly changing luminosity from canyon walls, trees etc., really require ISO to be changed. I have tried the ISO AUTO setting, but it just doesn't seem to come up w. the best aperture/shutter combinations I require.

I do a lot of shooting from a kayak and was planning to reverse the LCD screen so that it faces inward against the camera body when things get rough. But it seems certain adjustments can not be made w. the screen in that position, ie. ISO.
Does anyone know if the K-70's ISO adjustment can be set up to work w/o viewing the LCD screen in its normal position? Thanks.

Thanks. This JJC product looks like it would resist scratches better than a film protector. Price is a bit better than the Vikuiti.

I want to put a screen protector on the rear LCD screen of my new K-70, preferably hard acrylic, or clear film will do.
I do a lot of shooting from a kayak and was planning to just reverse the LCD screen so that it faces inward against the camera body when things get rough. But it seems certain adjustments can not be made w. the screen in that position, ie. ISO. I have not been able to find one. Anyone know of a source? Thanks.

Thinking about purchasing the Pentax 100mm f/2.8 lens for macro work.
It would be great if this lens is also sharp focused at infinity, since this would give me an equivalent 150mm f/2.8 telephoto for my K5 & K70. Anyone know if this is the case? Thanks.

Even though I now use both, I still prefer an OVF over an EVF for my type of work -- stills and landscapes. The advantage for me is very subtle, as the better tonality and perceived dimension often helps me in composition. In comparison, I feel an EVF tends to render slightly more contrast and a flatter dimension. With an OVF, I tend to feel the mood of the scene better, and when the the mirror pops up and the view goes dark, the image is not only recorded on the sensor, but also in my mind's eye -- like an instant visual to neural conversion.
That memory helps me in post to recreate that moment, regardless of weather what I remember was exactly what the sensor "accurately saw" and precisely recorded, which is what an EVF shows you. As you may guess, I usually end up doing a lot of post processing to reproduce that "memory." Regardless, the jpeg equivalent image on an EVF can never match what I can achieve via 16-bit RAW processing in ProPhoto. So my memory is usually recoverable.
However, I think Gene, 2351HD, and others have made several good points in favor for EVF's. One that I acknowledge is that EVF's are often superior in low light or when stopping down. In low light an EVF can "boost the gain" a bit and render amazing detail relative to an OVF. I have found that for indoor family pics, concerts/plays and low-light nature shots EVFs rule.

I REALY tried to like the EVF in the Sony A7's. Coming from a Pentax K-5, I prefer compact form factor DSLR's, but have found I now need the additional sensor real estate of full-frame.
Comparing the two cameras side-by-side, the K-5's OVF has more color depth and clarity. The EVF was just too contrasty (little detail in highlights) especially when shooting outside, and the Sony has one of the best EVF's available.
In this test of viewfinders, I tried not to be overly influenced by Pentax's ergonomics, but in comparison the A7 models felt like grasping a brick w. a lens mounted on it. Glad I held off on the purchase, and now looking forward to the K-1 which should fill my personal preferences (and budget) much better.:)

So it sounds like the final sensor performance will depend on what the Pentax engineers deem most important for the K-1. In the past, mixed results have occurred with Pentax's implementation of Sony sensors.
The APS-C 16.x Mp sensor performance was superior in the various K-5 models relative to other manufacturer's adaptation. But apparently not so with the APS-C 24.x Mp sensor, where the K-3 models' sensor adaptation fell a bit short in color depth performance and dynamic range relative to Nikon's and Sony's implementations (as per Dxomark).
Regardless, going to a full-frame sensor is going to be a big improvement over the earlier APS-C cameras. Just how big an improvement will soon become evident.

Anyone know who manufactures the CMOS sensor used in the Pentax K-1? Is it Sony?
One source I read said this sensor is not similar to any other full-frame sensor presently on the market. Thanks.

As I mentioned, HDR Tone-mapping in Photomatix will bring out ANY noise present, unless Micro-smoothing is cranked up (which destroys detail). Also, a hot CCD will yield more noise than normal, as is the case with shooting in New Mexico in the summer. In the 17" x 25" enlargements I do, noise can be noticeable in smooth gradations like the sky and clouds if not corrected before output sharpening. Again, I am talking about HDR processed imagages and not straight RAW images shot at normal temperatures below 100 degrees F.
In the RAW test shots I did yesterday, being able to shoot at ISO 100 certainly helped. Thanks everyone (except Pornosby Brit) for your help and the french lesson. Voila, it solved my problem.

Thanks Na Horuk. I'm mostly shooting landscapes with lots of sky at sunset with temperatures near 100 degrees F here in the high desert of New Mexico. Also the light is low, especially in deep shadows at this time. Those factors, a hot CCD, low light, and smooth sky gradations tend to accentuate noise from any camera. HDR processing in Photomatix further accentuates any noise that may be present during tone-mapping.
I'm not sure what magnification PS Bridge's "magnifier" loop works at? I think it's 200% magnification that I'm looking at and seeing noise in the skies of RAW files shot at ISO 200.

When you say "DR expansion," do you mean the "Shadow Correction" under the D-Range Setting" menu? If so, what does this setting do. I notice it has four settings: Off, Low, Medium, and High. Presently mine is set to "Low" (default?). The lowest ISO I can set is 100, after turning "Highlight Correction" Off. Thanks.

Yes, I do. It was on by default, so I turned it off and wha-la, ISO can now be set to 100. Thanks. Hopefully this will reduce the noise that I'm seeing in Bridge.

I shoot bracketed multi-frame RAW exposures for processing as HDR. In the past I always shot at ISO 100 with my Canon 40D to get the absolute minimal noise, which can be a problem with HDR processing.
But the lowest ISO I can set on my K-5 seems to be 200, and I am seeing noise in my magnified views from Photoshop Bridge. Then one day I accidentally brought up a default USER preset on my K-5 that set it to shoot JPEG's and I noticed the ISO was pre-set at ISO 100. So, is there a way I can set my ISO manually to 100 for shooting RAW? Thanks.

What I meant to say was that I have conducted TWO tripod tests. One with a remote control shutter release, and the other test by manually depressing the shutter w. shake reduction ON. The second test yielded sharper photos than the first test. Go figure?

The only testing I have done is using a remote control shutter release, which I believe automatically disables shake reduction. and then manually pressing the shutter button while using the tripod and shake reduction ON. The later test (manual shutter) came out sharper in all shots. Still don't understand what's going on here.

I have heard on this website and read in the K-5 operating manual that you should turn shake reduction off when using a tripod? Why? The camera can still move if wind is blowing, or when you manually press the shutter button, or even the motion of the mirror. Thanks for any help in understanding this. :confused:
