Thanks for the tip on the lighter fluid. Am also struggling with a sticking mirror — I tried to lubricate the sticking spinning gear, but it doesn’t appear to have helped much.

Hello all,
I am reviving an old Spotmatic F I haven’t used in years. The thing mostly looks ok, shutter speeds appear accurate. The big issue is that when I use my SMC Takumar lenses, the movement of the aperture ring is stiff towards wider apertures. I can open to around f8 without resistance, but past that it gets too stiff. The lenses are fine when not mounted, or when mounted on my ESII body. Just pushing the aperture coupling lever on the SPF, it’s clear that it stiffens up as it moves toward wider apertures.
Anyway, what gives, and how can I fix this? For the trip I’ve got coming up, I plan to use this as a second body for more deliberate landscape shots — so I don’t even really need the meter in the SPF to work, I just need to free the aperture ring.
Thanks,
Rex

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news: Google Translate
You can still get it in 120 at reasonable prices on eBay, so if you really want, you can build a freezer stockpile.
*edit* I think that E6 in general is on the way out. I'll be surprised if anyone's still making the film or chemicals in five years.

Of course, but Astia is also discontinued.

Very sad news. E100G was my favorite general-purpose slide film. I guess Provia will just have to do, though I doubt its skin tones are as good.

Just thought I'd chime in to say that I sent Eric my ESII to have the meter repaired and a CLA performed, and he did a fantastic job -- and, unlike past repair attempts by lesser techs, this time it's stayed fixed. He is the best, and well worth the trouble of sending a camera.

I'm not sure. I think the lens casts a larger image circle than is technically necessary to cover a 35mm frame -- if it didn't, there'd be issues with vignetting. I mean, shake reduction works on crop-sensor cameras with crop-sensor lenses.

Certainly -- Sony's A900 has in-body stabilization.

Noblepa, the ESII's meter only operates when the shutter button is half-pressed.

Isn't the ME even smaller than the MX?

Sounds strange. Mine did the exact same thing after I let it sit for a while -- I put new batteries in, to no effect. A trip to Eric fixed the problem -- the invoice said "Repaired electronics, auto timing circuit and auto speeds." So, not sure exactly what's up, but if new batteries don't fix it, it's probably something wrong in the electronics.
If you haven't dealt with Eric before, don't hesitate to do so -- he really is that good. When I sent him my ESII, it was dirty and tired-looking, with a dusty finder, dirty mirror, and decaying seals. Now it's damn near perfect. For the ultimate screw-mount Pentax, I think it's worth it.

I would recommend one of the later Spotmatics, which work with the aperture lever SMC Takumars to provide open-aperture metering, as noted by Tom. The Spotmatic F is great for manual shooting; the ESII is simply sublime with aperture-priority automatic mode. Just set the aperture to something roughly appropriate for what you're doing, then focus and snap away. It notes the aperture setting, sets shutter speed accordingly, and stops down when you fire, like a screw-mount ME. You've even got exposure compensation if you need it, and I can get fine results from slide film. They're a little bulkier than the other Spotmatics, but really nothing terrible.

Hello fellow Pentaxians!
I'm a 22-year-old student who has just ordered a K-5 from Adorama, and is eagerly anticipating its arrival! I've been a Pentax user for a few years now, shooting with an old ESII and some nice M42 lenses. I've enjoyed shooting film, and I'm getting fine results from slide film (sometimes the exposure is a bit iffy, but the good shots are good indeed). However, the cost of film and processing is just too much -- I hate looking at the camera sitting on the shelf because I'm too broke to shoot with it. So, I've bought a K-5, after months and months of saving and obsessive research. It does seem to be the total package -- I can't wait for mine to come.
Anyway, I've been lurking on these forums for a while, and they've been a useful resource. Since I've now committed to Pentax, it seems like a good time to start posting!
Thanks,
Jordan
