It's the */WR property which matters 2nd most for me. Even more I like the wider FOV it should have. Not sure about 2.8 though - usually I don't use UW lenses wide open, but this might give the chance for e.g. nice clos-ups.

Instead of any 18-55 incarnation nowadays I would always prefer the 18-50 WR RE, which is optically really good and due to its small size when not used extremely practical. I use it as my "drive-around" lens when cycling.

Moreover, any FF camera would benefit from a battery with large capacity, and this will also need lots of space. You can't plug this into an MX-like body.

What a neat concept that is! And it would cleanly fit Pentax' idea of making "something different".

Not sure, but: German mag "Colorfoto" did a review of the K-5 December 2010 (see Pentax K-5 - Überholmanöver - colorfoto - Magnus.de, german) and they too had a strange (result) in higher ISO quality, but for ISO 400 only. IQ for ISO 100 was found extremely good, and even ISO 800 was considered better then ISO 400 (see table at the bottom of the article). But they also stated an IQ better than almost all competitors (except Canon) on higher ISOs (>=800).

Maybe my writing was a bit confusing, I'll try a different approach to my question:
Suppose you're at a certain distance to some object and you want to have it in a certain final magnification. Due to that fact you choose your shutter speed. You've got 300mm/4 and 500mm/6.3 lense, for simplicity keep all other circumstances constant.
Would using 300mm and crop give better results than 500mm and upping the iso (to achieve same shutter speed)?
(Hypothesis: of course one can't answer that question generally. My point is just that you might get the relatively small advantage of 500 vs 300 mm at the expense of larger grain (due to higher ISO) then you'd have if you crop the 300mm image.)

I wonder which way would yield the better results concerning IQ: using a fast 300mm and crop the image (in case it's needed) or use a slower 500 and having to use a larger ISO. (I suppose one should use equally short shuttering in either case.)
For example, at 500 the bigma has f/6.3, which is 1.5 stops slower than the DA 300/4. Thus you'd need ISO ~4500 instead of 1600, keeping the shutter speed constant. But to get the same angle in the image, you just need to crop the 300-image "a bit" since its more than half the length of the bigma.
What tells experience?

I also bought one soon after the K-5, and I very much like its larger aperture which, together with the high isos the K-5 can manage, might produce astonishing results. I just had the chance for very few non-macro shoots, but I like the one attached esp. because of its nice DOF effect (it's technically not really brilliant though - just an experiment with ISO 1600, f/2.8 and 1/60s, probably to long for 100mm and mid-distance).

Hi all,
I recently bought a K-5 in its "double zoom" kit (18-55/3.5-5.6 AL WR and 50-200/4-5.6 ED WR) and by chance came across some URLs to this forum, so here I am ;-) Haven't had the chance to play around with it a lot, but I hope I can start getting used to it quite soon.
As it seems like quite some of us I started with Pentax a while ago in the late '70s with an MX which I still own, together with old prime lenses 28mm/2.8, 50mm/1.4 and 200mm/4. And the good news is that I already learned here that it's really worth it keeping these and use them with the K-5! :-)
The MX has been more or less unused for ~20 yrs I think, and I came back to photography with a Lumix DMC-TZ10 which isn't that bad and led me to some nice macro shots. Thus now it's time to start the real thing again ;-) Guess a prime macro lens will be the next one on the list...
Christian :)
