Any experience with Norman Camera?

From what I had read before, the APO was supposed to be the better of the 2. I believe it was due to less CA. Just ordered mine, so I guess I'll figure it out.

BTW, very happy (so far) with my order from Norman Camera. They were very niced and even price matched the HOYA filter that I wanted and waived the shipping and handling. Should be here in 2-3 days.

I'm looking into purchasing a SIGMA 70-300mm APO. I saw a good price for it at Norman Camera. Never heard about them, but SIGMA had a link to them from their website. Anyone bought from there before? Any experiene with their "MACK Extended warranty"?

Comparing zoom lenses speed

I'm confused. when you say 2 stops faster, are you talking about the f/4 vs f/6.3? wouldn't 2 stops less opening form f/4 be f/8? (ie f/4-f/5.6-f/8) I thought that the Tamron 18-250 at f/6.3 compared to the Sigma 70-300 at f/5.6 would be more like a 1/3 stop difference. If so, would that even change the speed the camera would need to shoot at to get the proper exposure?

They way I was looking at it (incorrectly probably) was that I would need the same shutter speed to get proper exposure whether I used f/6.3 or f/5.6 due to only being 1/3 stop difference. If that's so, is it even worth it to get that extra 1/3 stop?

Comparing zoom lenses speed

So I guess in summary, I am not really going to see a big difference in the "speed" of the lens if I am comparing the Tamron 18-250, sigma/tamron 70-300 or the pentax 55-300. Correct?

If that is the case, i might as well opt for the Tamron 18-250 and get the wide range in the zoom for the convenience factor of not carrying around multiple lenses. Anyone disagree?

Lowell Goudge -

Does the filter size equate to the apperture of the lens? I know the apperture is measured inside the lens, but your comment seemed to equate the larger the front of the lens, the bigger the apperture (which would make sense to me...)

Comparing zoom lenses speed

I realized that a very important factor when comparing zoom lenses is their speed (f/stop). My question is, how do you compare the "speed" of the different lenses, when they only list the smallest and largest appertures and they have different zoom ranges??

I can't afford a fixed f/stop lens (trying to stay <$500). I was wondering about purchasing the Tamron 18-250 f/3.5-6.3, but now I am wondering if I would be better with a more limited range zoom (ie: SIGMA/TAMRON 70-300 f/4-5.6 or Pentax 55-300 f/4-5.8) IF they do offer faster speeds (lower f/stops) at the same focal distances.

I just have the packaged 18-55mm Pentax, but I did think about perhaps buying a SIGMA 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 if I end up buying one of the zooms that only has telephoto range. I would not be buying that 17-70 until WAY down the road, so for a while I would be using the 18-55mm for wide angle and "missing" the 55mm-70mm range (if I picked the SIGMA/TAMRON)

So the options are:

1) Buy Tamron 18-250 and use it as the all inclusive lens and perhaps sell the 18-55mm

OR

2) Buy one of the telephoto zooms (if they would allow faster speeds than the Tamron) and try to save up to eventually (couple of years) by a SIGMA 17-70 (or comparable) to substitute my 18-55mm (and improve overall speed)

Does the convenience of the one lens 18-250mm beat the possible inc speed and price of the 70-300mm?

Sorry for the long post...

2 lenses better than one??

I currently have a K10D with the kit 18-55mm lens and wanted to upgrade. I was thinking about the Pentax or Tamron 18-250mm but now I am wondering if I be better off just getting the Pentax 50-200mm lens.

Pros of 18-250:

1) convenience of carrying only one lens
2) not having to change lens in the middle of shooting

Pros of 50-200
1) Cheaper
2) Better opticss?? (not sure about this, but people tell me that longer range zooms are worse than narrow zooms)

Any opinions?

exposure test.

I did post a previous thread about my perceived problems with exposures and did not mean to write a duplicate thread. Sorry if it turned out to be redundant in contents. I basically was curious on how different K10D would perceive the same image in terms of exposure, but understand that this could be affected by the printers ability to print the colors.

I do have some pics on the other link that show what I was talking about. I didn't posted b/c I didn't want to come off like I was posting the same thread twice, so I wanted to see the response about the "Exposure test"

Sorry if the thread seemed redundant...

I was having some issues with exposure and saw a test where they measure the exposure using a grey chart:

RiceHigh's (Pentax) DSLR and Lens Measurbation Page on Exposure Accuracy and More..

Any ideas? I don't want have to send the camera (K10d) in if it don't need to be and wasn't sure how accurate this test was

a) auto ISO 100-1600 (checked before, during and after)

b) did not use flash

The flash symbol was flashing. Not sure why the camera would recommend using the flash instead of increasing the ISO...

Just when I thought I had it figured out...

I was trying to do a test for using the top of a Pringle container box to set the AWB (ie a cheap man's version of the expodisk) when I stumbled back on my exposure issue!

I was just shooting picutes of the bed in my guest bedroom as a means to test the accuracy of using the semi-clear lid to set the custom WB feature. I noticed the pic seemed a little underexposed. Base on what we had talked about earlier, I used the OK button and saw that the ISO was selecting 200 eventhough I had it set to AUTO ISO ( I doubled check that under the Fn button). Also, the flash icon was blinking.

Again, why wouldn't the light meter select a higher ISO so as I wouldn't need to use the flash?!?! Really frustrating b/c the "logic' of the processor simply confuses the heck out of me. I was shooting in P mode, but I also tried it in Apperture priority and it behaved the same way...

Do they not look under exposed? How about the one at ISO 100 and ISO 200 having very similar exposures at the same speed 1/45s and apperture f4.0?? Shouldn't they be very different exposure?

I posted the pics in flicr.com:

The OK button worked fine. I was thinking the ISO would be listed in the back display. My bad. Now I'm playing with a remote control to set off the shutter that I got from eBay...

I think I need to go out and try to get pics in situations that may confuse the meter and see what happens.

You keep mentioning pressing the OK button to check the ISO, but when I half way press my shutter button to focus and press the OK button, I don't see the ISO info on the back display. Should I?

It is bothering me that JJ's k10d is not switching to higher iso's for any picture during flash assuming that auto is set, and limits are full.[/QUOTE]

:D That's exactly what I thought! So even if I was too away from the subject or whether I used flash or not, why did the camera decide to use an ISO as low as 200 when I have it set to Auto 800-1600 (can't remember which:o). Wouldn't the camera first try to correct the exposure by raising the ISO before using the flash? Wonder how I could test that?

BTW, thanks for all the posters. Its kind of hard when you have questions like this and don't have a GOOD photo store or anybody else that uses the same camera. You guys seem to take time and deliberation when answering my questions, and for that I am thankful.

I understand how the flash doesn't have enough power to reach the subject that far, but why wouldn't the camera change the ISO to 400 or 800 to achieve the proper exposure?

So do you recommend I use either slow sync or otherwise avoid using pop up flash with the P or Av modes? Is it better to use the flash in slow sync usually?

I was using the pop-up flash and had the flash on regular, red-eye reduction mode. It makes sense what you say about the flash, but I wonder why the camera did not show a slower shutter speed or bigger apperture if there was not enough light for the flash to do the job?

BTW, I am looking into purchasing a 360 flash in hope to have better indoor pics
