I'm 17 and self taught. I started with film in early 2010 (I had been interested in photography for a while but I was limited to a very antiquated point and shoot), with a Pentax Spotmatic and a good old 50mm f1.4 lens. It was difficult to learn but I believe this paid off a lot. The only classes I have ever taken for photography were to learn how to use the development chemicals. Last April I got a (barely) used k-x, my first dslr. It might as well be my third arm. I use my 50mm f1.4 with an adaptor, as well as a DA 35mm f2.4, the kit lens (shame on me, but I think it can achieve decent shots if one knows what they're doing), and various old manuel lens I've picked up, because I'm not a money bag and I prefer the old glass (though I've come across a couple of pieces of junk...) I always shoot with manuel settings and focus, I think it's the only way.
