Okay, panic over! I worked through the C menu and changed some display settings and magically the back LCD (monitor) is displaying information on startup. Of course I didn’t do them one at a time, so no idea what I had selected that turned it off
Thanks to everyone who responded so quickly - this is a wonderful resource!!

My new K-3 III no longer shows the status screen on the back LCD when switched on?? What have I done? The manual doesn’t indicate how to switch the status screen on or off…

The main advantage of mirrorless that is so often touted is its size in comparison to a DSLR. Well the iPhone (Smart phones) has taken that to the ultimate extreme. I don’t need new equipment and the need to learn other menu systems so Pentax with its legacy compact lenses is all I need...

Has anyone tried to compare the images made by these two lenses? I have the FA77 and like it for portraits and flowers but at a recent workshop was blown away by the OOF rendering of the Lensbaby velvet 85.

From my experience of electron microscope images, there’s something off with the scale of this image..? To be able to resolve an atom, the rest of the picture would be maybe a football pitches distance away...

I'm too in the herd of Black Friday bargain hunters burned by BrandShop. I tried to control my LBA but the offer on the FA-31mm was just too good and I finally pulled the trigger on Nov 30, even though it was already listed as out-of-stock (how that for internet buying confidence...!). Imagine my surprise and delight when I got a notice that it had shipped on Wednesday, Dec 3 at 9:44PM! Ah but the price had jumped from the web site 773.42 to list 1299.95. Also, the higher price appeared as pending on my CC.
Yesterday, I called BrandShop (Sarah was super professional and very sweet!!) and was given an email link to upload my original receipt that I'd downloaded as a pdf file. I was able to do even better, as when I logged on to My Account at the webstore, my original order was still accessible and for the 773.42, so I was able to send a copy of that!
Lens was delivered by UPS this afternoon at ~2 PM and Sarah's email confirming refund of the difference arrived at 2:11 PM. Now just waiting on the CC company to register the refund before I start using the lens...

Thanks for the interesting find! What camera are you using it on. The feedback on the B&H web site indicates it doesn't fit well on all cameras? I wear glasses, would that be a problem?

I've used ACDSee since 2004 and currently ACDSee Pro 6. It's very similar in functionality to Lightroom, but is much more intuitive to use than anything written by Adobe (IMHO). They currently have some amazing discounts on offer thru March 19!!!!!

I gave up on neck and shoulder straps in favor of the OP/TECH USA E-Z Grip Strap (Black). This fits snug around the back of my right hand and properly adjusted, allows just enough movement to reach the shutter and exposure compensation buttons. The real advantage is that walking around, its just an extension of my hand. I don't notice the weight of the camera and lens, whereas I was always uncomfortable with the weight around my neck, especially with telephoto lenses. Another addtion was to use the Camdapter Manfrotto Adapter as the lower strap connection as this now allows me to clip straight onto the tripod and I don't have awkward straps getting in the way all the time.

I use ACDSee for PP and they advised an i5 CPU is enough but max out the RAM as that's where the image
Is stored during processing. 8 GB min and more is better. An i7 CPU is overkill in their opinion. I would also recommend getting the best screen resolution - 1980 x 1080 and upgrade the video card with one that has dedicated graphics RAM.
BTW, ACDSee Pro6 is much like Lightroom but I find its much more intuitive compared to any of Adobes products...

@Sig0431
FWIW, It should be "Brass Tacks" - i.e., fundamentals, not rot (as opposed to steel tacks that rust :D)
My experience says the 18-55mm kit lens is the answer to your question without getting more specific as to subject. For max sharpness, recognise the need to stay in or close to the lens sweet spot between f8 and f11, adjusting ISO if needed for the exposure. Also, use RAW and deliberately underexpose by 1/2 to maybe a full stop to avoid blowing out the highlights and then correct the exposure and sharpen in post-processing...

The unprecedented price increases in the UPP abruptly stopped my purchases of new Pentax glass and caused me to seriously consider switching brands to Cannikon. This after being loyal to Pentax since my 70's K-1000... 'nuff said!

OK, see if I understand correctly? If my screen resolution is, say 1920 x 1080 (which it is), if I set my crop tool to 1920 x 1080 and crop an image with larger dimensions, the resulting section of the image will be a 100% crop?

I see constant reference to "100% Crop" in many lens tests. What exactly is the definition and how do I go about making a 100% crop of an image?

Apart from his verbosity, he's conclusions are valuable (maybe someone really needs to script him...?) - "If image sharpness is your major critera, FF sensor has APS-C beat by a hair."
I've been waiting ~2 years to upgrade from my 2005 *istDS that makes perfectly acceptable IQ for my primary purposes - viewing images on my computer LCD screen or LCD TV. I've just this week finally given up on the Pentx FF speculation and upgraded to a K-30. I'll report my very favorable initial impressions in a more appropriate thread but as far as IQ is concerned, it's only noticably better than the *istDS when the image has to be severely cropped.
Now I have to make an image worthy of a large format print to justify 16.3 MP versus 6...

OK, after lurking on this site for nearly 12 months before joining in December 2011, I've finally given up on my dream to own a FF Pentax DSLR. Today I placed my order for a K30 with the kit 18-135mm to upgrade (suppliment) my trusty *istDS I've had from May 2005. Now have to wait patiently for B&H to deliver (fingers crossed they are above water and can ship out over the GW Bridge...)
Nov 1st update - reading the PF News today, saw the $50 price drop, so got back to B&H and they immediately credited me with the new price. Fantastic customer service!!
Nov 12 - finally the sun broke through for the first time in a week! Less favorable impressions compared to the *istDS - battery cover, on/off switch and e-dials feel cheap. SD card difficult to remove. Polycarbonate body is OK but not yet as comfortable as the *istDS. IQ is not noticably better lens for lens when viewed on my computer screen - now I have justification for a large format Espson printer :) :)
Positives: Shutter sound is "buttery" and I love it! AF is quick and positive with hardly any misses. VF information is complete and I'm thinking to shut off the LCD dislay, once I learn ALL the functions. Love the large LCD after squinting at the *istDS display for way too long. Couple of quick shots for comparison... *istDS then K-30 and then a K-30 action shot which the *ist DS cannot manage...

Hi everyone,
I started my hobby in the UK at 13 when I bought a Baldessa range-finder 35mm camera with Prontor SVS shutter! That's when I decided to only make slide images - can I say i'm "cheap"?
I switched to a Pentax K-1000 when on assignment in NJ in 1976 and have been loyal to the brand ever since. I added an ME Super body in ~1988 when it dawned on me that to switch lenses from normal to a slow telephoto, you also needed a faster film speed - duh! I switched from slides to 100% digital in 1999 with a 2 MP Kodak DC280 that took remarkable images :)
I bought my current *ist DS in 2005 when my company gave me a one-year practice retirement :D It's been around the world a few times since. I've recently joined a couple of local camera clubs and I enjoy competing in the DPI class (can I say still too cheap to buy a large format printer...)
I really want to upgrade to a FF and joined Pentaxforums to be aware of the rumor mill - need I say more...
