I've always loved the work of this Singaporean Pentaxian, who has shot with film and the Q in addition to the more familiar DSLRs. Great sense of drama and colour, and he has done some cycle touring ... what tends to be called bike packing these days ... in Australia and New Zealand, often with just the K-1 and a few key primes like the M20mm f4.

You know him from his posts, too ... informative, reflected by his experience, and that he's a gentleman.

You should be very thankful that you are not part of this family on Christmas morning!!

A reminder that not all children grow up in fortunate circumstances. Told first hand by an upright member of the family......................

When I was a child, my father cheated on my mother and didn't love her. Later, my parents divorced.

My mother died in a car accident, and my brother and I had to live in my grandma's old house.

Grandma’s sister was an alcoholic.

The whole family lived on my grandma's savings.

Grandma died recently.

My Uncle Andy is barely keeping himself out of jail from day to day.

My brother left home and won’t talk to us anymore.

Dad, now 73, had to go to work to support the family, and eventually he is going to want me to do the same thing.

Yours sincerely,
Prince William

I wandered through the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit at the Royal BC Museum yesterday.

With any photos that really grabbed me I looked closely at the lens and gear that was used. Anyone pondering this lens may want to look at this image.

No.

Also no. The camera array is the feature that lets marketers put high prices on flagship phones.

Video now at 33k views.

The other videos have taken years to reach such levels. I (and others) have been going on about the film resurgence for years. The people who fail to see the importance of film must have no contact with young people or arts/culture. All comments about performance and high tech are misguided. It's old people who are tech optimists and like performance and the new. Younger folks are often very interested in tactile manual and slow things. If they are interested in culture that is. Don't ask the jocks (unless they are also into art)

Phones have solved the "problem" of photography.

Film cameras provide a completely different experience as well as a different look to the results. The film resurgence is emphatically *not* about convenience.

While I personally have no intention of returning to film, I do think it a clever idea to try and develop new Pentax film photography products. Who but a niche player with a rich film legacy would be suited to take on such a challenge? This could indeed be a way to get young people interested in the Pentax brand again, and who knows, once they have fallen in love with Pentax film cameras, some of them may well also try Pentax digital.

As long as the film-related efforts don't prey on the digital system, where I have finally found my home in photography, I'm fully on board.

A few weeks ago I ran into a 20-something from Orlando out doing some event photos with his older Nikon film camera, B&W's IIRC. I spent half an hour or so talking shop. I was told that there are quite of few around his age who have taken a shine to film, they have a couple of very active clubs there devoted to film cameras and film development techniques.

He said he has his cell phone if he needs immediate gratification social sharing pics, and has no interest in otherwise owning a digital camera. Film for him is an artistic outlet, which he said pushes him to be more aware of light, contrasts, lines, and composition. I was very encouraged that photography as an art may be more appreciated by the 18-30 crowd than I had expected.

Others speculation about Pentax K-1III

Pentax already have that for all camera models in composite drive modes. You can even set the Pentax camera to save all intermediate exposures and select the better composite exposure after the shooting session. Pentax could simply advertise (make people aware of) what Pentax cameras already have that other brands don't have. Not only , most people don't know Pentax, but even people who know Pentax don't know the features of Pentax cameras that other brands don't offer. It's useless to add more features to Pentax cameras if nobody knows about it.

Exactly. GM, BMW, Ricoh, , are not in business to provide any particular product, or features of the product. They are in business to make money. Period.
Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's called free enterprise. My point is that they will do what makes money and not do what doesn't.
Let's say you put your house on the market for $350,000.00. You do some research and find that a lot of buyers want a house with a gazebo in the back yard. It turns out that putting up a gazebo would add $20,000.00 to the value of the house but it will cost $25,000.00 to do it. Do you build it?
Business is business. Businesses want to maximize profits. In some cases, if it's a publicly traded entity they are required by law to do, within reason, what's required to maximize profits.

The Story Of The Man Behind The 1932 Photograph, “Lunch Atop A Skyscraper.”

It seems that construction workers become very comfortable with heights. They seem to just go about life as usual with little thought for height at which they are working.

Below is a picture of my dad (light shirt) and another fellow in 1924 or 1925 atop the Ben Franklin bridge in Philadelphia. They are just 60 feet above the Delaware River — not nearly as far up in the lunch crew in the famous photo. But whether you fall 60 or 600 feet, you are still dead. Dad is 19 or 20 years old in the photo and an apprentice electrician. The original photo is about 2.5" x 3.5".

Comparison between the old and new 100mm macros. Contains many large images

So my new 100mm macro arrived, so I decided to do a quick comparison between the two.

I shot an image at each aperture with the focus on the expansion cut at the edge of the saw blade, and then did a focus stack of the entire scene.
I'm only posting crops of the lenses at each aperture. I stopped at f16 as it seemed pointless to go past that aperture.

The first series is of the old lens.

Overall image, remember this is a focus stack at f5.6

At f2.8

At f4

At f5.6

At f8

At f11

At f16

Then the new lens:

Overall image This is a focus stack at f5.6:

At f16

[/url]

Overall they seem to have done fairly well with the new lens. I was able to force purple fringing on both lenses, but there is far less on the new lens and it cleaned up nicely by f5.6
The old lens showed a bit more fringing and wasn't really clean until f8.
The difference isn't earth shattering, but it's there. The new lens is definitely an improvement over the old one, though it may not matter depending on the type of photography one does. Both are adequately sharp.
I chose this scenario as quite often macro lenses are used for photographing shiny objects.

at the top of the label - the purple fringing looks really bad...

Yet on a subject that I would have expected to see a problem, it is excellent....

 ;)

Joking aside - the new HD Pentax‐D FA Macro 100mm f/2.8 ED AW certainly does handle fringing better than the older version.

The old adage the more we have the less satisfied we are seems relevant. Do note that the complaints start up every single time Pentax releases a new product no matter what it is.
It's too expensive: Pentax is doomed.
It doesn't have some particular obscure feature: Pentax is doomed.
They stripped some particular obscure feature from the new product: Pentax is doomed.
It doesn't have flagship features at an entry level price: Pentax is doomed and I'm jumping ship.

People have been asking for a new entry level camera for some time now. They say Pentax needs to make a new sub $1K (preferably less) camera to stay relevant in the market. An entry level price point camera is not going to be a full featured enthusiast camera. That's not a realistic expectation, it's going to be a somewhat bare bones camera using technology that has been on the shelf long enough that it can go into a low price product.

It's going to be a camera aimed at the occasional user. It's going to be a camera that spends most of it's life buried under dirty socks in the back of a closet.

People, you got your wish, you are getting your new entry level camera. I didn't think it was going to happen, I figured Pentax would abandon the entry level market for dead and concentrate on cameras that had ample separation from cell phones.

People, you got your wish, you got a budget camera made for people who still want an SLR experience.

People are calling it a rehash because it has more or less the same feature set as the camera that came before it. I've got news for you, every camera made in the last two decades has the same feature set as the one that came before it, except sometimes they drop a higher density sensor into it and do a tweak here and there because they've figured out how to make a minor improvement.

People, you got your wish. Maybe stop complaining because what you wished for is what you already had.

Why is it surprising that a K-70 with some new parts costs more than a K-70 did when it was first released? If you built a house in 2016, I guarantee you cannot build the same house today for the same price -- even if nothing changes at all. Inflation calculators show a 24 percent increase from 2016 compared to 2022. This inflation hits all of the components that you used to make cameras.

I get a little aggravated when people come up with a list of new features that they think should be instituted on the KF, all while raising prices negligibly. That wasn't ever in the cards. The KF will be a solid photographic tool capable of capturing very nice still images, just like the K-70 was. If there are no aperture block issues, then I would have no issue recommending it to a beginning photographer.

I don't know about you, but my mind doesn't turn off once I leave the office.
Indeed, my job lives rent-free in my head and I solve lots of problems and think up new projects on my own time frequently.
Especially because I like my work.

I can understand easily how an optical engineer who likes their job continues to think about solving problems outside of work.

Internal Revenue "Service".

Cable TV "Service".

The big sign over a counter in Walmart that says Customer "Service".

Those always struck me as an odd use of the word service; then one day I overheard two farmers talking. One of them said he'd just purchased a bull to "service" his cows.

AHA! Now I get it.

As someone who got the message from Steve’s sister I saw the message with the subject “Steve” with dread. I read it last night and I had planned to post about it, but I hadn’t yet found the words. Steve will be missed. I knew him only here, and we had no direct emotional ties. But we shared a passion for cameras and photos and discussion and education and knowledge. We bonded over simply preferring excellence over mediocrity and preferring to be part of the solution rather than simply complaining.

His legacy should be to remind all of us we aren’t going to be here forever. Whatever you plan to do, do it while you can. Find a way to connect with who and what you love, and spend time doing things that fit with that in mind.

Goodbye Steve… I hope your life was as fulfilling to you as it was to us. Thank you for sharing a part of yourself with us. You will be missed.

This is indeed such sad news. Steve was what this forum was all about; sharing knowledge, kindness, and above all respect to all. I always clicked on his posts because I knew I'd acquire more knowledge from him.

Extending comfort to Steve's family.

Rest in Peace Steve, you will always be missed on this forum.
