What an excellent kit for a trip. I think I would do sort of the same thing, Rolleiflex 2.8f, Pentax MX w/77mm and 31mm, and Ricoh GR. And a gang of film…….

I'm really fond of the Think Tank Retrospective 10. It'll hold 50-135mm on one side and the camera with a lens attached on the other. You'll even have room for other items.

What Should Pentax Do?

Yes yes, we are all very passionate about cameras and what we think Pentax should do. I was only throwing my hat into the ring of opinions. I fully believe that with the pixie dust and size of the DA and FA limiteds it would make a natural companion to a compact(er) camera vs a DSLR sized camera. Obviously, this is all a bit too much to ask but I'm sorely in love with my Limiteds and would love to have something smaller than my K-5iis. Yes, I have a K-01 Stormtrooper but I tend to grab the K-5iis when given a choice and would love a new version of a K-01 with a VF.
I have always believed that inspiration comes from many places and sometimes for me it comes from the inspiration of loving my Limiteds. I can only imagine if it was paired with an equally loved compact( not my GR, though I shoot a ton of fashion with that lil beast ).
We as photographers, are a finicky bunch of artists. I would never ever tell anyone that their way of being an artist is wrong, we all have our path to what makes us creative and how we create our art. But surely, I can say this: for my creative professional life as a photographer, I love the Limiteds. And I believe whole heartedly that if Pentax was going to create a compact camera with an EVF/OVF that utilized the power of the Limiteds, I would snatch it up in a hot second. I can see me on set, between takes, capturing the hidden moments of the young ingenue. I could be working for a fashion gig, walking through the wooded trails of Malibu, shooting a leggy model, as she tries to keep her balance in her heels. Or I could be simply be having lunch with one of my actor friends as I listen in as he tells me of his adventures of weeding through the Hollywood Starlets. Then I would snap a candid of him as he looks away as he gathers his thoughts.
All of this with such a simple camera that just captures with the beauty of a limited lens.

What a innovative and out of the box idea. As it is..... My bag carries a Hassy 501cm and my Ricoh GR. It would be so dope to carry around this idea! But did you mean Pentax 67 since the RZ didn't have a grip or prism bump? I knew what you mean though!

Yeah!!!! I'm already a fan of the 77mm and 43mm and love the idea of the 31mm if I thought I would shoot that length. But it seems that my b/w film loves the other two FAs.
And yes, if Pentax can somehow make those DAs FF ( size ) compatible, that would be amazing!

I'm coming to this late but maybe now that FF is on the horizon, we can figure out what we can do with all those amazing DA limiteds. With such an arsenal of fantastic glass that performs brilliantly and is ultra compact, why not try to finesse the idea of a compact camera powerhouse?
I believe a camera that would execute those limiteds with the sensor of the K-3/K-5iis, AND have it in a compact rangefinder/X-Pro/A6000/updated K-01 would be a spectacular addition to the line up.
Pentax now has FF coming, 2 powerhouses in the dslr corner( K-3/K-5iis ), and The Super Strong 645Z. Wouldn't now be a good time to surprise the market with camera that fills a niche that will attract new people to the brand? We know that that specific type of camera is in demand and that it has a following. Lets grab them with a new camera along with introducing them to the beauty of pentax glass and the specialness of the da limiteds.
Just a thought.......

First Camera that was my daily carry ..... Canon AE-1 ( Fathers )
First Camera purchased with my own money ..... Pentax SF-1 ( 1989? )
then from there it was all easy coasting .....
Pentax PZ-1
Pentax PZ-1p
Nikon N70
Nikon N90s
Nikon F4
Mamiya RB
Hassy 501c ( 1999 )
And from there it's a bit fuzzy. But my early days was crystal clear because they were milestones for my career. Everytime I got a better paying gig I invested in new eqpt.

The thing that pushed me away was how expensive the lenses were. The FA* 85mm was far too expensive for a starting photographer. I switched to Nikon and got the lenses I NEEDED for a cheaper price. I now get lenses I WANT with the limiteds. I met up with Ned on a trip to Southern California and he mentioned that the FA 31mm ltd is like my 35mm Summicron asph and I agree with him. For the days I don't pull out my M6, I grab my K-01 and limiteds. Even though the limiteds are more expensive than the Nikon equivalents ( though they are not equal ), I find I want to shoot them more and more. So, I have a pro kit with Nikon D800/D700s and a Gang of lenses and then my K-01 as my everyday camera with my limiteds. And this is not to forget my MX and Me Super with a smc takumar 1.4. Bottom line.... Even though I left, I was always a Pentaxian just waiting for me to make more money to afford the lenses I wanted!

I became an official Pentax user at the ripe age of 17 with a purchase of a SF-1. And then stayed until 25( I dreamed of a FA* 85mm ) to leave for Nikon. And now I'm back shooting a K-01 at 42 and not ever leaving because the lenses match my Leicas.

Personally, I would love a new K-01/K-02. I have these great limiteds that would be perfect for a new compact.

This is my dream list of features.....

1. EVF/OVF - the tech is out there to make it happen.
2. Better AF - though I shoot portraits/fashion .... Just a bump in AF speed would be incredible.
3. Keep it 16mp - I am just tired of the D800 and its beefy files.

That's it. Not asking for too much. It seems like a very reasonable request. I still shoot my Stormtrooper daily but those things would make it a true alternative for the D800. I bought into it for the beauty of the limiteds and its smaller size than my D800/D700 kit. If it doesn't happen, I'm thinking of just dropping the hammer and going K-5iis or K-30 for size alone.

I too am waiting for a new K-01. I love my current one but would love to see how they plan to update it. Though it was a flop to many people, it was surely a hit with me. I completely believe it was made for the da limiteds and with a lens line like that, it makes complete sense to me to have a compact-er system. I have handled the Fuji X-Pro system and personally enjoy the pentax lens system more.

So, yes. A new K-01!!!!

I wish Pentax would launch a product like range finder type

I love my Leica and shooting the Rangefinder style so I too would love this to happen. I think a K-01 with a simple RF or an OVF would kill it! If they added a FF and weather sealing then that truly would garner some amazing fans, not to mention a powerhouse of a shooter. I shot this to show a friend the size difference in both cameras and how small the " Me " truly was. And now I'll share it with everyone here......

you can def see that the difference between the cameras are pretty nominal. maybe this is why Pentax never made a RF. They are already had cameras that matched the size of Leica and they always had amazing lenses. And maybe they just don't feel connected to the rangefinder feel of shooting, so this is why it was never released.

Again, a new K-01 with an OVF/EVF would be amazing. Paired with whatever sensor, my preference being a FF but from what I have been shooting with the current sensor...I truly don't care. I can't wait to purchase more lenses ( 77mm ltd and 15mm ltd )because I think this would be a killer compact killer!

So yes...I thought I would share those images and I agree a move for a K-01 that grows into a new mirrorless RF would be spectacular.

Calsan,

I would love a new K-01. Love the idea. If it had an evf and maintained aps-c it would be a no brainer for me.

And have you tried the 15mm ltd? I think that will be an awesome wide. I think my kit will be a 15mm ltd, 40mm ltd, and a 77mm ltd . If I get fancy maybe a 35mm and the 100mm macro wr.

And thanks. I have been an OutKast fan for days so when they told me that they want me to shoot Luscious Lefty, I almost pee'd my pants. Let's thank Hollywood for having amazing opportunities for me to be a working photographer.

Pioneer,

I agree. Pentax hit the spot with this camera. I'm not sure why we have given so much power to reviewers. Once this camera came out, I was completely jazzed about it. I'm just so sorry it took me so long to actually purchase it and not spread the good word sooner. The truth, is that as photographers what works for us can only be determined by us living with the camera and shooting with it personally and professionally. Then and only then do we truly get to understand if it's for us. I am still in my infancy with this camera but I have found that it works within my flow. And I really look forward to when this camera has become second nature to me and I really get to create outstanding images.

It's nice to find someone who shares the same old school logical thinking that seems to be forgotten in this age of urgency.

Cheers!

Hello Everyone,

I've owned the K-01 for 2 weeks now and here are my thoughts.

I simply love it. There are so many wonderful things about it. The image quality. The size. The design. Just to name a few.

But before I go and talk about those things let me address the things I was worried about before purchase.

Initially, I read all I could about the camera and what most people complained about.....

People have talked about the ugly design, the rubber cover for a memory card door, the shiny lcd, and how horrible the button configuration is.

I think the only real thing I have not covered is the LCD. Yes, everyone is right it is shiny and in super bright light you have a difficult time seeing what you are shooting. But for me I can work around it. I can also use my hand to shield the screen. It doesn't bother me. I'm going to buy a shield protector for my screen and from what I read this will help a bit. But in general, the camera is completely worth the solution finding for this issue. Again, I mentioned this on my blog. I am very willing to work around whatever issue that people talk about. And in the most part I don't think that they are issues. I personally think that it is an amazing image maker.

K-01 with ACMAXX and Thumbs up?

Hello Everyone,

New Owner of a Stormtrooper K-01 and am wondering if anybody has tried to protect it with an ACMAXX and increased its already perfect hand holdable grip with a Match Technical Thumbs Up. I have tried 2 different Thumbs up from my other Leica Cameras and was wondering if other people have tried this.

I'm super excited about my new camera and can't wait to start posting what one camera and one lens( DA 40mm 2.8 limited ) can do for my photography.

I am a recent owner of a beautiful stormtrooper K-01 from another forum member here and I love it! So far after just one day of shooting with it( DA 40mm limited 2.8 ) it is a simple but yet elegant camera to operate.

OK now for my reasons for purchasing it.....

Only one in terms of getting a mirrorless ......

Size/Design: I know now that it is not that much smaller than other Pentax DSLR's but nonetheless the size/design appealed to me. I currently own D800's and they are monsters to carry around all day. I wanted an everyday camera that wouldn't put a strain on my back and my wallet. It's shape and size made me think that I could fit it in comfortably in a very specific camera bag I own( I carry basically it with a Hasselblad 201f ). And in truth, this works for me as an everyday carry all kit.

Hello Iksobarg,

I'm just a bit tired of carrying around the tanks of the d800s around. I love them but if I'm taking portraits of my GF, I don't always need all that camera. I'm in the opinion, that all I'll need is a K-30/K-5/K-01 and some limited lenses. Who wants to wear a back brace anyway when carrying your gear around. I also feel a bit disconnected when shooting a leica rangefinder. I love a prism and that way of shooting. If I want a small film camera, I'll shoot my MX and a limited( I have yet to purchase any...but I love what people have been showing out there ). Pentax has made a great mechanical camera in MXs and I plan to just enjoy making images with something completely known to me in terms of format. I'm in hopes that I will find a limited soon and also will start scanning so I can share with people. Also, having a DSLR would speed the process too.

Cheers,
Jeremy
