Yup the K5 is a bit hopeless when it comes to flash im afraid. It does work well if you set the preflash working though. ( red eye reduction ). This is obviously not always ideal but it works and it works reliably and consitantly. :)

Also, wether you use 5 point or eleven point autofucus is more down to your subject matter. For example.... 5 point is better for say tracking an individual rider
but if its a group I would use the full 11 points. I cover a lot of the horse racing and I use 11 points because you never Know which horse is going to come over
the fence first and its a wide spread group. With the K5 you could opt to use TAV too. Set your shutter speed to about 500sec aprature to about 5.6-8 and let the camera choose your ISO to suit. Nothing is a substitute for experience though. So just use this info as a starting point and enjoy.

Since your shooting fast moving objects you will most likely be shooting high shutter speeds to freeze the movement so SR is best left off.
Also... SR doesnt like shooting in quick sequence and needs a couple of seconds to settle for each shot.
You can also try panning techniuqes to try for different kind of images and you can have fun experimenting with that too.

That only makes any sense if the photographer only works in carefuly set up situations. like studio work etc. I have been a Pro for nearly 30 years and I use both methods as every pro photographer does unless they specialise in something that permits the time to set up manualy. I often use two or three guns with the nikon using TTL and it works superbly. To enable me to work quickly at weddings I use people as flash bearers lol. :)

I had simlar withdrawal symptoms when I sold a lot of my Nikon gear lol so I know just how you feel. Just remember its the results that count... and judging by the results you should be happy enough indeed. I still use Nikon too. Trust me... Nikon grows on you. Its just reliable. It performs as you expect. It simply builds your confidence and trust. Enjoy my friend. You wont be looking back for long. :)

I am in the same line of thought as JinDesu here. I would also add that high ISO performance of the camera is more important for low light work. Since the depth of field is so shallow at such wide settings its not really much of an advantage. People mostly buy fast lenses for shallow DOF rather than low light work.

I can not believe the amount of FF v APSC that goes on in these forums. They all have there Pros and Cons. Who cares what who uses ? The best format is the one thats best for the individual. Anyone claiming that one format is better than the other for anyone but themselves is simply an idiot. Between the three main contenders of Four thirds, APSC and FF , I prefer APSC format and would choose four thirds even over FF. Thats just me though. I spend more time after more DOF than less. Its not difficult to get shallow DOF with APSC either. Surely to god everyone is well aware of the differances by now between the formats. Im going have to stop reading posts lol.

Since I use just one sensor for 95% for my work, I dont mind that there is only elleven. There has been no mention so far from pentax to say the ridiculously large sensors have been shrunk down and Ive yet to hear if the flash opperation has been corrected. Its one thing to say it will focus in low light, but there is not much point without knowing what it has focussed on. My fingers are crossed ! The fact it is still using safox 11 point is not that prommising but i wouldnt think impossable. So I await for a full review with baited breadth. These two things make the K5 very much bottom draw stuff. The only way to get correct exposure using flash with any amount of reliability is by using pre flash. In this day and age that is totaly unacceptable for a supposedly top draw camera.

More food for thought for you.... You can use a single image in photomatics and produce results like this in tone mapping ! |
