Reasons to use RAW over best quality JPEG

I am mostly a RAW shooter, but there are pros and cons no matter what you shoot. The simple fact is there is no right and wrong, only the best way for the individual. Once you know all the Pros and cons you make your own decision. I personly have no time for those that profess one is better than the other, other for themselves. Just enjoy :)

It just seems every camera gives a certain look or feel. I only go by the resultant image. There is something about the pics I just do not like from the 2s.
I can not even say what it is. It certainly holds a lot of detail but I just do not like the images. I love the images from the K5 though. :)
Everyone has different taste though. :)

Pentax: Is it really that bad for moving objects?

The k5 2 is super in low light. The focus sensors are huge which is probably its only reall drawback now. The CF is not bad at all though. The focus system works better with longer focal lenghs too it would seem. Wide angle is where it often gets a little undone. Being aware of the ultra large sensors is about the most important thing. Bear those in mind and it should hold its own against most. As you already mentioned, Nikon is in a leauge of its own for focus ability. Bear in mind also, that while the large sensors are not so good for pin point accuracy on small objects they can actualy help when it comes to tracking moving objects as long as they are obviously not too small an object in the frame. :)

I saw this lol. I have just tried find my example. To say mine showed it more clearly is an understatement :) I fear I may have deleted it unfortunatley. Yours is extremly mild case. The moire I saw in my pic ruined the shot and was not usable. There was no need to blow it up to see it. It stood out like a sore thumb :)

Heres the rub lol Yes, of course it will get moire and more so than a camera that uses an AA filter. Thats what the AA filter is for lol. Except here is the other rub. The materials that produce moire you will also see with a lot of cameras that have weak AA filters. I use a Fuji EX1 which also has no AA filter. I have shot a few thousand pics so far and have seen moire once in a single shot. It shows badly on a mans jacket from a wedding I shot with it. Fuji uses a different type of bayer that seems to work really well and it produces outstanding pics. It also produces a big problem for RAW files though. Wedding and fashion photographers may want to think twice, but the fact is, even then it is rare enough not to be a huge problem. The guy wearing the jacket was in a couple of other pics too and it had no moire. So even that was a case of just being at the wrong angle or light or watever. In my opinion it does not happen enough to become anything of a huge problem. What I would say though, is that I much prefer the look of the K5 images to the K5s images. I would opt for a K5 2 rather than the K5s but and its a big BUT... not because of moire. No matter what anyone says about K5, its sensor is simply superb.

Reasons to use RAW over best quality JPEG

Another point in question is the simple fact that every camera is different. I started off with the Olympus E1 which was fantastic, but it was also only 5 million pixel.
To get enough quality to match top 35mm you needed to shoot in RAW. I used it for years. Then the D300 was born which became a giant leap forward. Even JPGs were better or as good as medium format. Not only that, but different cameras can produce good or not so good JPGs. The D300s are not bad but RAWs are notably better.
The K5 can produce great JPGs which are more than just usable. Things have moved on. I am a full time pro and I shoot and use both. If i was not a pro I would prob not change much. I would likely shoot in RAW. Thats simply because I simply get enjoyment from getting the best out of my images though. The truth is, thats a bit sad in many ways lol. When is enough enough ! How much quality do we need in reality. There would still be those thinking they are better because they shoot RAW if they were shooting a camera with 100 milion pixels with every lever of DR lol. JUDGE THE PICTURE AND NOT THE METHOD :) Use whatever works for you.

I would hold out or trey to obtain one from another source. The samyang lenses come under a variety of names such as Rokinion, vivitar etc etc. They have superb IQ and at the price they sell at, they dont realy have much in the way of competition :)

I think thats a question only you can answer lol If you dont want or need them, delete them, they take up a lot of space. If you think they maybe or could be needed at a later date then keep them. It is easy to think they have done there job already. Indeed that could be the case for many a folk :)

Yup, people often state and or talk about JPGs as if you cant edit a JPG. That is total rubbish. You can do lots with a JPG just as you can a RAW. As has been said though, a RAW just gives you a little more headroom in most departments. If you are after the best poss you shoot RAW. The gains are small but they are there.
There is certainly nothing wrong with shooting JPG. A lot depends on the camera of course. Most modern cameras produce great JPGs. If you do shoot JPGs though I always advise making two lots on your PC. Then at least you always have the originals too. I prefer RAW but its a matter of more keeping the negs for me. A raw in itself is useless, so they still end up as JPGs for the most part anyway. There is another side of things too. If you have a good program, and you edit JPGs you could argue that you may as well shoot RAW anyway. Then there are arguments again for shooting in JPG. Faster and longer frame rates, auto lens corrections etc so it is all swings and roundabouts. The bottom line is you shoot what suits you and you are happy with. Once you know all the pros and cons it is easier to decide.
It is no different than choosing aperture or shutter priority in your camera. They are just choices or tools that can be used. :)

What if 3rd party battery grip gets wet?

If you were seriously that worried about water you could easily seal the base with that waterproof thin white tape that plumbers use. I have never heard of one single incident where a grip has failed due to damp or getting wet though. If the grip itself ever did get dammaged... so what.... you could buy 6 of them for less than the genuine artical. I have the original grip on my Nikon. Yes it is good but what a waist of money. Its just a grip at the end of the day. The quality of the cheap ones far exceeded my expectations. I expected it to be cheap and nasty, but it simply is not the case. :)

You need develop, fix and stop bath. A wetting agent for the final rinse is nice to use too. The wetting agent helps to prevent watermarks on film and print.
I used to buy my chemicals in liquid form, and by the gallon. It worked out much cheaper in the long run. Are you just developing or printing too ? :)

The 40mm and 70mm pancakes give superb edge to edge sharpness even from wide open. Wide angles of comparable performance are a little thin on the ground. I would opt for a wide angle tokina here. :) cant think which one exactly now lol Im sure someone will say. But one is outstanding for sure :)

K-5II P-TTL overexposure with tilted flash - test and analysis

The best way to avoid most of this is to use a flash with an auto mode built in. The metz certainly give very accurate readings. I once measured the accuracy of my hammerhead metz with my seconic light meter. I found it to be spot on. The worst was at F16 where it was one third of a stop under. Of course it used to be the norm. These days it seems it is only implemented on top range units. So if PTTL is not reliable... bypass it altogether. I am sure there are lots doing it already.

Im sure I already have on here, but, I was getting loads of ooomph pics just like the OPs. It turned out to be the SR. Not a problem once I knew.
it just needs time to settle so it does not like shooting in quick succession. Thats why i was convinced it was SR. Until he posted the one with the sharp rail. I have not had any sharp areas if it was caused by the SR.

Yes i can understand your frustration :( I had problems with my K5 too. I managed to resolve them for most part. Mine was SR and finding out about the huge focus sensors. Mine was not as bad as this though. There has to be a fault here. I would take it back and demand an exchange if possable. I ended up selling mine and buying the XE1 fuji. The K5 is not that bad though. It certainly should not be doing what yours is doing

Well its a little more complex than that but you are correct, in that if you used center focus point, this is not the problem either. The sharp rail also discounts SR thoughts too in a way, since SR ooomphs the whole pic as in the first set. Im wracking my brain here lol. This is a good one as Im at a loss at the mo. If you can be sure it is none of the suggested possibilities then I think the camera just has to be faulty. It is catching that bottom rail while using a center focus point that has got me. Other than a faulty camera, the only way I can see that is possible would be you accidentally locking on first pressure lol I hope you manage to get it sorted but I am fresh out of thoughts on this one.

mmmmmm true.... but i would still make certain. This looks very much like it, but OK. it is unlikely to be a sensor size issue due to the subject, but not impossible if you were targeting a small object such as the lamppost. Despite what you say, which is indeed correct i still think its an SR issue. The front and rear focussing will no doubt be caused by the large sensors unless you are already aware and compensate for it. The only other issue that springs to mind regarding the tamron 17-50 is that it suffers greatly from severe field curvature at the 17mm end. This means the lens needs stopping down to at least F8 for an even field of sharpness, pref even F11.
Those are my thoughts anyway.

Turn your SR off :) That is the most likely culprit. It takes a short while to settle, so taking pics in quick succession will do it.
Secondly, be aware of the size of your focus sensors. They are far bigger than your square indicators suggest. The center point reach out all the way to the () spot metering markings.

Poll: Staying with Pentax or jumping ship?

I have sold the K5 and equipment and bought a Fuji XE1 with the 18-55 zoom. It is different for sure and much more portable. They are toooo different a camera to compare in any way realy.
The biggest let down of the fuji is Adobe etc still have not yet sorted out how to process the RAW files properly. Even though the JPGs are outstanding I want and miss the RAW files.
I am happy with the change over though. It suits me just fine. Image quality is on a par with the Pentax but I would not say better except for perhaps 6400 ISO where the Fuji is superb.
The fuji certainly will not be everyones cup of tea though. :)
