"Casio's next innovation came in the area of digital cameras. In 1995, Casio launched the world's first digital camera with an LCD screen. This camera gained instant popularity as a convenient device for capturing digital images and transferring them to a computer. Today, this kind of technology is universal, and film-less cameras are the norm." Message from the President - Corporate Social Responsibility - Sustainability - CASIO

Why didn't you buy the K-5? Ohhh now I see what happened--you took it upon yourself to answer the questions I had for Hydriv. He states: " Someone mentioned a "full frame" camera and so I naively thought, what the heck.. I'll get one of those. That seemed like a pretty good idea until my face smacked into the wall called sticker shock." The leap from paying $1400.00 for the K-5 to the 2k Canon isn't a big one.

The full frame Canon is only 2k, and not 20k like it was back in the mid 90's so I don't know where you get the "sticker shock" from. My first K-r failed on me after 100 shots and ended up doing this:

I bought the K-5 last week and am trying to break it so I can return it for a full refund to B&H. If it survives my "boot camp" then it will be a keeper. What took you so long to get into digital photography? I got the worlds very first digital camera back in 1995 when the rest of you were still shooting film. It was a CASIO QV-10 point & shoot with a max resolution of 640x480 and a rear LCD screen. I think I paid $300.00 for it new.

He doesn't move too fast, does he? Was his record label photographer there as well? Probably not, as there are a million photographs already taken of him.

I am not paying Pentax or anyone 20 dollars to fix my defective camera--they can shove it.

I get my K-5 today via UPS, and if this happens to my cam, then some heads are going to roll.

K-5 Build Quality Control issues?

When my new K-5 arrives tomorrow, there better not be any signs of use or I'll be sending it back for a full cash refund. I noticed that Newegg doesn't sell the Pentax camera brand anymore and they are a huge online retailer. I am not the kind of person that does warranty repair either. I'll buy a new item, throw the defective unit in the box and return it as damaged if I need too. I don't believe a mega rich Japanese company such as Pentax should get away with defective issues such as the one above in the youtube vid. And they should do a recall on those bad batch cameras along with the bad serial numbers that go with them. Car companies do recalls all the time on their junk. Camera companies should do the same so a customer can decide on whether or not they might want to replace with NEW instead of having a defective unit sit in repair for 3 months.

It's hard to say what started it; I've read many different possible causes from the battery, to the stock lens, to even a bad batch of built cameras. My K-r was doing exactly like this video shows:

I do remember how it started: I was wrapping up an outside night shoot of this building. The K-r was mounted on a tripod with the 18-55 stock lens; it was damp, but not raining and in the mid 40's. I had it set on a timer in manual mode; F22, 30 sec exposure. I was fumbling around in the dark between shots wanting to review the last picture taken. I was feeling around to press the play button and accidentally pressed the Live View button (This shouldn't be a problem or an accident as that is what the camera is suppose to do when you press a button; it's suppose to work as advertised.) As soon as it went into Live View, I said a few choice words, and tried to get out of Live View. Why on earth does this damn LV button even half to exist is beyond me. My LIVE VIEW is what I see through the viewfinder--why would I care to have this on the camera to begin with. I take my shots; review, and shoot more if necessary. I DO NOT NEED LV. And I can't even disable the button in the menu to keep me from pressing it when I don't want to.

So the camera goes into BEZERK mode and now any button I press causes a mirror flip. I am convinced that once your camera has this issue, you are doomed. I am hoping that Pentax has resolved the issue and the purchase of my K-5 this week will be the end of it. I do know that once I get the K-5 in my hands I will run it hard for a few hours in an attempt to reduplicate the mirror flop issue. If it fails, then I am not going to sit at home for 3 months waiting for it to be fixed. I will return the camera for a full refund and keep buying them until I get one that works as advertised. I think anyone who has had a bad one sent in for repair, should have immediately been replaced with a new camera by pentax. Why should their problems be our problems where we have to spend time and money making it right? If Newegg and Pentax were really cool about my very FIRST Pentax camera purchase, and then my failure with it, they should have sent me another one for FREE as a goodwill gesture.

This was my Newegg.com review of the camera on their site:"Failed under Pressure" Newegg.com - PENTAX K-r Lens Kit Black 12.4 MP 3.0" 921k LCD Digital SLR with DA L 18-55&50-200 Lens

Notice that after my review Pentax never replied to the negative review and also Newegg.com stopped selling PENTAX all together!

Thank god I was able to discover the problem the first week I had the camera and I was able to get my cash back. But what is up with Newegg.com dropping out on Pentax? I know they sent that camera back to them, but to not get a "we're sorry" and here's a rebate or discount to something else makes me wonder about the Newegg/Pentax relationship.

Hope B&H doesn't pull the same crap with me on my K-5 purschase as this is the very first time I have ever bought anything from them. Why? Well I don't like NY and I don't trust anyone in that city!

Wanted to introduce myself to the forums as a new member as I ordered my K-5 with kit lens from B&H for $1350.00 today!

I was some what skeptical in my purchase because back in early October I ordered my first ever Pentax camera the K-r. The last time I had even held a Pentax was back in HS, and that was the K-1000. My several hundred shots went without a hitch using the K-r then something went wrong during my first cold weather night shoot. After several shots and fumbling around in the dark in an attempt to press the preview button on the back, I accidentally pressed the Live View button and that's when the camera went bezerk! Every button or switch I pressed would cause a mirror flip. I removed the 18-55 kit lens, and pulled the battery to try and reset whatever malfunction occurred. I thought everything was okay, but then it started acting up again with the mirror flip issue. I sent the camera back to Newegg.com for a full refund and told myself that maybe I should avoid PENTAX until they get this figured out on somebody else s time and money.

Fast forward to this week. I am in the market to finally buy a Canon or Nikon, but that pesky K-5 keeps rearing it's head. I liked the look, feel, and functionality of that K-r minus my total camera meltdown so I crossed my fingers and made the plunge back with Pentax. Now I am just hoping I didn't make the same mistake.

Did I?
