I replied to a For Sale thread yesterday with an offer via PM and also replied to the thread. This morning I had a notification of a PM but when I tried to look at it, it said I wasn't logged in which I was. Now I can't find the PM in my inbox or sent box and the thread is missing. I can't seem to locate it in either the For Sale or Sold sections and when I look for " my posts" it doesn't exist.
Understandable if it was sold but if they accepted my offer I'd hate to leave them hanging. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Should I quit drinking coffee or maybe I'm not even awake yet!? :D
Thanks

My girlfriend just picked up a K50. I haven't had time to play with it much yet but I can tell you the viewfinder alone would be worth the upgrade over my K-r. I, too, wear glasses. Others would be better at pointing out the techical aspects but it does have dual control wheels and was fairly easy to use. My birthday is in October so I'm waiting to surprise myself with a K3ii or I'd have one too.
Good luck with the purchase!

I worked in DC for 30 years. There are a lot of good places to go and you got some good suggestions. Depending on what you're looking to do, anyplace along the Tidal Basin and up river to the City Docks in Georgetown is good. Also, on the otherside of the 395 overpass on "M" Street is a big marina and fish market. All within (a generous) walking distance of the mall. The problem with working there was I never wanted to go back and and spend the day or evening with the camera. I always wanted to shoot in the evening/sunset as you can get some beautiful colors in the sky if the weather is right and some of the buildings really come alive at night. I would suggest a tripod if at all possible.
Oh and if you're on "U" Street, go to Cakelove. They have really good cupcakes but get there early because they go fast! Sounds like a fun trip!

Thanks for all the tips. I decided to go for the Dell.
Bob, I thought about having a small shop build one but couldn't find one close by. This one comes with a 1TB hard drive which I though was more than enough but your post makes sense about having different drives. Maybe I can add one later. I had planned to get an external drive for storage but your setup makes more sense. It does come with a built in card reader.
Now I need to research the best program for working with raw files. I'm sure I'll be back.
Thanks again!!

Hello all,
I wasn't sure where to put this, but this seemed like a good place to start. I need to get a new desktop computer, mine is 7 years old and on it's last legs. Right now I shoot in jpeg and really don't do any post processing but I would like to start shooting raw and get into some editing. Other than thinking faster is better than slower and more memory is better than less, I don't know what I really need to look for.
The new computer will be used mainly for photo editing. I don't see much video work as I have yet to shoot a video. :D This is strictly for home use so volume would be low compared to someone at a more professional level but I would like something with a little room to grow. The only software I have currently is Silkypix and GIMP. I was thinking about possibly going to something like Lightroom in the future. Other uses are standard home use, internet surfing, reading PentaxForums, etc. I have no interest in gaming or streaming beyond a few youtube videos.
My previous computers have been Dells and I've always had good luck with them. I was browsing their site last night and saw one that caught my eye. It's on sale until 7am, July 16. I thought I would run it by the experts to see what you think or if there are better options out there. They're also having a sale on various tablets which coincides nicely with a current thread about portable storage devices for displaying photos. I do have an iPad mini but the tablet may be a better option. I currently have a Kr but would like to upgrade later this year to the K-3ii for the astro tracer capabilities among other things so I'm not sure how the tablet vs iPad would work for tethering, etc.
In short, I don't know what I don't know. Here are the specs on the computer and tablet:
XPS 8700 with Windows 8.1 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz - 4 DIMMs NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 745 4GB DDR3 video card 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4790 processor (8M Cache, up to 4.00 GHz) Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24"W Monitor, 24.0 Inch VIS, Widescreen, VGA/ DVI/ DP Qty 1 Dell UltraSharp 24 Monitor - U2412M
The tablet is the Venue 8 Pro 3845, Windows 8.1.
I guess what I need to know is will this work? Do I need the tablet or will my iPad work as a portable photo viewer and for tethering? Did I miss anything?
Thanks for all your help!

I vote to de-criple the k-mount. One of the reasons I still use my film cameras.

I bought 2 sets of off ebay for about $16 USD total from China. Surprisingly good but they are full manual. The only glitch is the camera mount is painted and metering doesn't work. I need to sand some of the paint off but haven't gotten around to it yet.

This is my first attempt at post processing. I used the kit lens at 300mm, a little sharpening and resizing.

I contacted Costco customer service yesterday about the lens and got this reply:
Thank you for your e-mail to Costco Wholesale. The product details are what to go by, the vendor did not have the photo of the product redone just for us. Lens Specifications: 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Weather-Resistant Lens
Thank you,
Elizabeth
Costco Wholesale Corporation
Hope that helps.

This is the one I use: sunpak pro 423px | B&H Photo Video
I also bought a cheap monopod at Walmart for around $20 usd and keep it in the bag too. It's not the world's most advanced tripod but it works well for what I do. The only real drawback is with my 55-300 at full extention the head will droop a bit so aim a little high. Any combination that's better balanced doesn't have this problem. My 500mm mirror doesn't do this. Overall for the price it's quite nice.

Hi,
I have an Osawa lens, 200mm prime I used on my Ricoh film cameras. Mine doesn't work on my K-r either. If infact yours is a K-mount lens and you have everything set on your camera for using the aperature ring correctly, check the metal mount its self. On mine, there is a recess on the mount face so it doesn't make contact with the camera pins making the camera "think" there is no lens at all on the camera.
I have yet to do it but shorting the pins or filling the recess with aluminum tape should cure this.
Let us know if this works for you. I may get around to trying it too.

Myth 4 relied on funding from the CLASS Act to show the original numbers. That was for long term care/disability insurance and while I forget the exact numbers now we would have had to pay into the system for 5-10 years before being able to draw a benefit. The money would have been used to offset other costs. Just like the Social Security system does now. Unfortunately, the CLASS Act was abandoned and we've never gotten a new estimate from the CBO.
