This is actually a very good idea, thanks. Although I'll be hard pressed to find someone who could do this for me here in this area..

backpack for a big guy

Hello,

I am looking for a bag or backpack that a guy like me can carry comfortably. I am 2,00 metres (6ft 7in) tall and quite wide as well.

Currently, I am using a Think Tank Retrospective 20, but the strap is too short to wear it over the chest with more than a t- shirt on. I also have a PacSafe shoulder bag which only has room for the most minimal gear. The strap is slightly longer than the 20, but at this time of the year, wearing warm clothing, still too short.

I was thinking along the lines of a Tamrac Expedition 7 or 8. Not. that I need/wish to take that amount of gear with me that these backpacks can carry. (That's probably the danger of those big bags). Just thinking of the actual size of the carrying system. Is there anybody that had the chance to compare those 2? Does the Expedition 8 actually have a bigger (more roomy) carrying system than the Expediton 7?

Or could anybody recommend a backpack for longer walks/hikes that would fit a big guy like me?

Thanks for your help!

no, not every day. ;). I drive to work monday morning and back on friday after lunch.
Antoher reason to wait for daylight getting longer: then I can go out taking pictures instead of spending the time after work in this small room on this accomodation rig. :P just now it's dark when I go to work and dark again when I am finished...

thanks for your kind comments!

It was about 8a.m. - so not too early ;) But I can't wait for the time of year when the sun goes up at 4a.m - not that I would love to get up that early, but it's much easier to get out of bed when it's already broad daylight :D (let alone driving three hours to work)

just talked to the site manager today and she said I could have "my own" room. So I won't have to move into a new room every week... Then I just buy a monitor, leave it there for the weekend and just take the mini home with me. ... nice .... then I can use the money i saved by not buying a laptop for a K-3 :)

semi-portable monitor?

Hello,

I will start commuting to work on a weekly basis (by car, home for the weekends) and I want to take my mac mini with me as music server and work with lightroom. (my kids and wife will want every minute of me while at home, so not much opportunity for photo editing then ;)...)

I am looking for a small-ish monitor (15"?) that can be calibrated and is not too heavy so that I can pack it away easily because I can't leave anything at the place where I will be staying during the week. I am considering a macbook also but they're a tad expensive and since I already have the mini...

Any ideas, recommendations?

Thanks for any input...

dave

I want to place my computer in a different room than the screen and the keyboard. can I just use an extension cable for the screen? how long can I go with such a cable? the keyboard is wireless anyway (not sure how long that reaches, though) but I thought about getting a long USB cable with a hub at the end for webcam and cardreader. I guess I'll need about 10-15 meters of cable. Or is there any other clever solution for this?

thanks for your help!

all dishes have to be cold, obviously, to avoid steam/fogging. also the food tends to look quite dry when it's standing out hot too long. meat usually is raw in the middle to get the nice juicy red color contrast to the roasted outside. a spraying bottle with water helps to keep vegetables moist and fresh looking. a brush and some vegetable oil gives a nice glistening look...
natural lightning, and close up shots would be my choice. nice, if you have a lot of kitchen tools laying around. use herbs, fresh and dried spices scattered around to get a variety of textures. fresh fruit and vegetables give a lot of colors, but try to keep some kind of color scheme and avoid being too wild. if the dish consists mainly of chocolate, for example, try to get a brown, earthy color scheme and so on...
don't forget post some pics of the results ;)

usually, I shoot with available light, which here in Norway is plentiful even in the evening (at least in summertime)
I've never been to equatorial regions before, but I've been told it gets dark very fast ...

my selection of clothes usually limites itself by the fact that I am over 2m tall and quite "robust". There's only so much of my size that fits into 1 suitcase (I would never fit a decent set of clothes in a carry on ;) )

I happily admit to a degree of insecurity about having limited options since I am quite new to this game, i.e. lacking experience and having no clue as what to expect at our destination..

my choice of gear would probably look different if I had to carry it with me all the time, though.

next trip I'll surely know better ;)

haven't been on any larger trip with my gear, yet, so I'll just have to find out what works best, I guess.

one thing I found out about most things concerning photo is that if you ask 10 people you'll most likely get 12 different answers. quite similar to my other hobby, audio gear and music... sometimes it's the gear that's most fascinating sometimes it's just the pics (or the music)
