I don't know about Australia but here in North America posting a single image for the purpose of commentary, criticism and/or review would easily fall under fair dealing (Canada) or fair use (USA). There would be no copyright issue whatsoever.

Last year I bought a full set of 645 extension tubes on eBay, in excellent condition with case, for about $80. If there are none listed now I am sure that more will show up.

Just throwing it out there that the 45-85 FA zoom is a great lens, if quite heavy. That covers wide to normal. It's my go-to lens on my 645NII, I ended up selling my 75mm prime.

My go-to aperture is F11 with my 645NII. I tend to shoot wide (35mm or 45mm) so that helps with keeping more things in focus. I almost always shoot handheld so that lets me stay around 1/60 - 1/250 depending on my film speed.

I can't comment on the digital side of things but I can say that I've had mixed experience getting my film 645 gear repaired by the Canadian service centre. My guess is that they don't see a lot of it or have a lot of parts for it.
I sent in a dead 645N body that was deemed un-repairable due to parts no longer available. I told them to dispose of it but in hindsight I should have tried sending it to someone else first. I also sent in a lens that was having issues with the focus ring jamming. The lens took two months for them to CLA and adjust the focus issue and it wasn't cheap but it is working well now. There was also a dent in the filter ring, they wanted to send it to Japan to fix that but I said no.

I have a V500 and I also reverted back to the original Epson scanning software. I started with Vuescan but I found that it is maddening to try to select multiple frames, not to mention a lot of other frustrating things. The Epson software finds frames every time and for me that's all I care about. I only scan to post images online.

I have seen a number of reports from people using red LED lights as safelights without issue. Do a safelight test and if it works you are good to go.
OC / amber / orange / light brown is the recommended safelight for working with papers but, as far as I know, red works just fine too. Don't forget multigrade papers are blue-sensitive materials. In terms of wavelegth, red light is actually farther from blue than orange. I believe orange is normally used just because it's easier to see than with the red light. I have used both for B&W printing.

The 35mm A lens is a must-have for this system, IMHO. Prices can be high but if you are patient you can do well. Keep an eye for them to pop up on this board.
In terms of AF, my normal lens on the 645NII is the 45-85 AF. I use it in manual focus 80% of the time but the AF does work well enough. The nice thing is that these cameras have focus confirmation that works even if you are manually focusing and I find that the system is very accurate.

I was out on Saturday at -30 C and my camera got very cold. I was walking around long enough to shoot a full roll of Tri-X, maybe 45 minutes or so. Other than the winding motor slowing down a bit everything worked perfectly and not a single problem with the roll after I developed it.
OK, there was one problem: I tried to operate the zoom ring without taking off my mitten and accidentally stopped down to F32 for one shot. :)

I've been running the same set of lithium batteries for a year and a half now in my 645NII, Off the top if my head I don't know how many shots but it's been dozens of rolls of 120 and 220. And that includes shooting as cold as -40. Lithium batteries are largely unaffected by cold.
Just get some good batteries (I think I have Energizer ultimate lithium) and forget about it.

I've shot my 645N and 645NII in temps below -30 without any shutter issue.
Were the frames with the problems the last ones you shot? If so that would probably support the theory that it was getting too cold for the shutter.

Adjustable easels and I just don't get along, I find them really frustrating. I switched to Saunders single size easels and will never use anything else again. I also have a Speed Ezel and it's good but the Saunders are much better.
The only downside is you can't print weird crops but I prefer to print to the size of the paper anyways. If I need to do print something odd (like two prints on one sheet of paper) I just mask it.

I took a photo with the Pentax Optio WG-2 that ran as a double page spread. Most magazines are printing at ~150 dpi so any reasonably modern digital camera can do it.

Hi Mike,
Does the 28mm Takumar have auto aperture or would it need to use stop down metering? Camera is a K1000 if that matters.

Instead of extension tubes I would suggest getting an M39 macro bellows to attach to the adapter. I see them on eBay quite often.

Whatever meter you get be sure to RTFM. I learned the hard way that you need to understand how to read the meter and how it measures light if it is going to be useful. Also don't just blindly dial something into your camera without actually thinking about it. I've gotten home and realized that I shot 1s exposures in full daylight based on using the meter wrong. If i had stopped and actually thought about the numbers it would be obvious they were way off.
For outdoor shooting my best exposures are the ones based on spot metering or a combination of Sunny 16 and instinct. Any attempts to use an incident or reflected meter have not been good.

If you are shooting professionally I suggest getting a hot shoe adapter and a long PC sync cord. That way you'll have a backup system for when your triggers act up. Use it to fire one off-camera flash and set the rest of them as slaves.

My 645NII goes mountain biking and hiking a lot and it's the best camera I've ever used in any format.
That being said, based on your criteria of lightweight, mechanical and super sharp the first thing that popped into my mind was a Mamiya 6/7 or Fuji GW670/690. The Mamiya is pricey but you could get a Fuji in your price range. I had a GSW690III (which I regret selling). It was a sweet camera for outdoor photography and would shoot reliably at -40. Needless to say the negatives are awesome in the darkroom.

I use a top loader style case that will fit the camera with the FA 45-85 attached. That just gets tossed into my backpack, messenger bag or whatever I am using that day. Not the exact model but something like this: Mountainsmith Zoom | Medium - DSLR Bag |

PS, a word to the wise: the original Pentax hood WILL vignette on the wide end of the lens if you mount it the wrong way. Be sure to line up the white dots. (I am sure you can guess how I know this...)

If you watch eBay one might come up, that is where I got mine. I think I paid almost a third again as I originally paid for the lens though!
Otherwise this was the generic hood I ended up getting from B&H and it seemed to work fine. Definitely not as securely attached to the lens as the Pentax one though.
