Best DSLR replacement?

Hi all, I bought a Pentax K-30 3 years ago that I've rarely used. When I bought it, I expected to use it on a daily basis but it pretty much is only used on special occasions or events which aren't often since my lifestyle has changed. Don't really want to part with it because the image quality is just so great but it's the best thing to do right now. I want to replace it with a newer compact Pentax digital camera that is as close to DSLR image quality as possible. So Pentaxians, which camera is the best replacement for me? Ricoh GR? I've been under a rock for the last few years and don't really have the time to research a great replacement.

My K-30 suffered from the same defect. If you're still have a warranty, it will cover the repair costs. I had mine repaired under an extended warranty by Precision Camera. They repaired my camera well and got it back to me in a week with no drama.

K-30 focusing issues

Had this exact same problem 6 months after I got the camera but only in dark lighting. Eventually, it became a problem in any lighting. A month or two ago, I fixed it by hitting the AE-L button. Unfortunately, now my camera focuses fine but ALL my photos come out nearly pitch black. Get rid of this camera while you can!

Worsened AF performance.

You are not alone. My K-30 is having the exact same problem. Out of nowhere, the AF system goes haywire from time to time. When this happens, I get soft images, front and back focusing issues, and the AF not functioning properly except for only a few photos out of several hundred. So far this has happened 3 times since May. It happened twice in very low light, even though my K-30 performed above and beyond in very low light when I first got it, and once while shooting outside on a cloudy day. Like you, I fear my AF system is deteriorating over time and I know its not my lenses because they worked perfectly on my K-R. I fear sending in my camera for the same reason you mentioned but I'm strongly considering doing so because I am 100% sure my AF system is getting worse over time even though I can't prove it since these occurrences are so random.

What's going on with my K-30?

Hello everyone and thank you for your replies.

Like you said, I am sure that it is one of the batteries. I thought about it and remembered that at a certain point during the night the autofocus improved when I had to change my battery. Now I just have to pinpoint which one it is and I will also give my AA battery holder a try. I've also updated my firmware to the latest version. Hopefully this will fix it and these issues won't pop up again.

Zafar Iqbal, sorry that you're having similar AF accuracy issues with your K-30's. I'm no expert, but to me it doesn't seem like you're pushing the K-30 to its limits.

What's going on with my K-30?

Hello, everyone. Out of nowhere, my K-30 went haywire last night while I was shooting a salsa dancing social but now the AF is completely fine.

Earlier that day, I was having AF difficulties with my 50mm 1.8 lens but thought it was just a one time fluke since the only problems I've had with my K-30 since I've gotten it are it freezing up or the battery dying without warning but both of those only happened once or twice. Later that night, the AF problem showed up again except this time the AF hit or miss, unusually slow, subjects weren't sharply in focus, and brought its friends back focusing problems, mirror lock up, and freeze up with it.

I was able to fix the mirror lock up by removing my lens and putting it back on again and fixed freeze up by taking the battery out then putting it back in but the AF problems remained. I thought maybe I was accidentally telling it to focus somewhere I didn't want it to but that wasn't it. I switched back and forth between AF.S and C and played with the AF settings in the menu but that made no difference. I switched from my 50mm 1.8 to my 18-55 kit lens and still the same problem. I switched back to my 50mm 1.8 lens and played with the ring on it which helped the AF a little bit but the AF was still pretty much useless although it worked just fine in video mode. I thought maybe I was choosing the wrong settings in manual mode for fast moving subjects in low light so I tried every auto mode but the camera overexposed everything. On top of that, I remembered that I recently shot performances at a salsa dancing festival with these same lenses where there was lower lighting and faster moving subjects I was far away but I had no issues at all and the AF was lightning fast.

Does anyone have an idea what may be going on here so I'll know what to do in case this problem randomly appears again? I'm hoping I won't have to send the K-30 or lenses in for repairs.

I deleted most of the pictures where the problem is apparent but here are a few examples:

Update: Sometimes now I can't get the camera to turn on so I have to take out the battery and reinsert it then it will come on.

This weekend I had the pleasure of watching some of the world's best salsa dancers perform at a salsa congress. Thanks to my K-30, I had a very unusual problem; I had way too many good pictures (if there's such a thing). I was so impressed that at ISO 5000 there was little to no noise in my photos and when I say little I mean very, very little. I am so glad I upgraded from the K-R!

No luck with setting AF to AE-L. Sorry to hear that you have a similar problem. Not sure where the module is. I just went ahead and ordered a K-30. I tried one at work the other day and was extremely impressed.

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately, AF is not working properly in live view. I will see if the problem persists with a different lens when I get home. I will definitely consider upgrading.

Hello, I'm in need of some help here. This morning I dropped my K-R a couple of feet. It didn't looked damaged and since it's survived multiple drops, pouring rain, and rollercoasters I thought I had nothing to worry about. However, the autofocus has a mind of it's own all of a sudden. About an hour ago, it only wanted to autofocus on things close to me but now it only wants to autofocus on things far away. The manual focus is working just fine though so this makes me think the problem is the camera itself rather than my 35mm 2.4 AL lens. The only issue I've ever had with my camera is with the playback screen going black after I look at the last image on the memory card. That problem came up when I accidentally put the battery in wrong and had a hard time getting it back out. Since then, the issue fixed itself but the battery won't glide in and out so easily anymore. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it?

I've been working as a cheesy souvenir photo photographer at a major tourist attraction here in Atlanta since late May. About every week or every other week, I will always see 1 or 2 tourists (among thousands each day) with a Pentax. However, yesterday something extremely rare happened. I saw over 10 Pentax users in 1 day. I saw several K-x's, K-r's, K200D, K100d, and etc. I walked over to a gentleman from Europe and complimented him on his K100d. He called it a very good friend that has been all over the world with him throughout the 6 years that he's owned it. I never thought I would see this happen!

By the way, at work we have to use a Nikon D60. Not my cup of tea. I feel like my K-r outperforms it n every way possible.

Today I just so happened to take a snapshot of a fellow Pentaxian today at my brother's graduation ceremony. I had no idea that he was using a Pentax camera (K5?) until I zoomed in. This is the second Pentaxian I've ran into so far.

Today I was browsing the blog of Garance Dore, one of my favorite street style fashion photographers, and noticed her playing around with the K-01 (she usually shoots with a Canon 60D) and shooting some video with it during a runway show at New York Fashion Week. The K-01 makes a cameo at 0:25 and 3:16 here .

She's the only person I've seen with a Pentax besides myself. I'm not sure if she has a K-R or a KX but my K-R is the white version too. When I'm out shooting I get all kinds of reactions, mostly positive. Some people are so excited and stop to tell me that they love my camera while others have never even heard of Pentax.

Here are some FAQ's that I get:

1) Wow, I've never seen a white camera before. That's really nice! Who makes it?

2) Pentax?? Who's that?

3) Are they as good as Canon or Nikon?

4) How many megapixels does it have?

Usually the questions stop once I say 12MP like it's not good enough but some still want to know does the K-R have good video and how much does it cost.

These were taken at a dance event called Battle of the Dance Lines on my K-R with my 55-200 kit lens. Most of these were taken with an ISO of 1600-6400 with F4 and a shutter speed of 1/125 in manual mode. Only some minor editing was done because I really wanted to have some good high contrast and make the colors pop.

These were taken on my 55-200 kit lens, most in Aperture Priority mode.

I got my K-R back in October after waiting 3 years to decide on which DSLR to buy. Let's just say that I have not regretted my decision not even once. I am one very happy Pentaxian and I knew I would be :D These are some pics that I've taken over the past few months.

Just a few everyday snapshots:

Taken with my 18-55mm kit lens

Taken with my 55-200 lens with just some minor color adjustments for the colored images and the high contrast black and white ones were shot that way in custom image with monochrome mode

Taken with my 50mm F2 manual focus lens with some minor color adjustments at ISO 1600 or higher. I feel like these could have been sharper but I wasn't entirely sure if they were in focus or not while shooting even though the camera said they were.

My K-R used to make that high pitched sound when I first got it but it doesn't do that anymore. Now it just sounds like a regular click.
