PetaPixel’s Bold Camera Predictions for 2024 (Pentax)

That was my thought on the subject. “Vintage inspired” presents a pretty wide gamut. A metal body with chrome finish rather than paint would be nice, though.

I still see color aliasing in some of my images, which means sensors are not high enough pixel density yet.

Part of me wants enough resolution that every lens I own acts as an anti-aliasing filter. The other part doesn't want to deal with the file sizes that would probably require.

We might be close to a new GR camera

I just saw this video on the RICOH GR Photography YouTube channel. It's an interview with Inaba-san, who leads design of the GR.

For the most part it is about the details of the design of the GR III. It goes into some detail about the various design principles they followed.

But right at the end, Inaba-san seems to hint that a new model is coming. This is at 21:00 in the video. Hence I post this in News and Rumors.

To me it sounds like a camera is nearing announcement. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but it seems like a different model that follows the same core principle, rather than a simple successor.

Here's the video, so what do you think? Just a GR IV? Another variety of compact? Monochrome? An ILC under the GR brand?

Remember that this is a GR channel, so the content and timing must be by design.

In some ways, photography is a bit like fishing - some people enjoy the process, others just want the result. I happen to think that more enjoyment of the process (less mechanisation means greater user involvement and decision making) makes more creative images, but you van't deny that more mechanisation makes for less frustration and near certainty of captures that were once very hit and miss. It all depends what you want or need - creative input with an element of unpredictability or near certainty of results. I suppose we're lucky to have the choice. I miss simple film cameras though - there's a joy in the process, for all the frustrations and a pleasure of ownership in the results when you get it right. A bit like fishing.

Where is Ricoh going now? Any thoughts?

First and foremost they urgently need to update the K-1 with a mark III to incorporate the advances in the K-3 III and update the sensor. I'm sure they are losing users simply because there isn't a newer FF model.

After that, I'd say the KF should be a very short-lived model - they should release a replacement with an update to the 26MP sensor and some other improvements to shake off the "warmed up K-70" idea.

An updated GR III with the 26MP sensor would also be a good idea.

The value of a niche product is not established by the completely uninterested.
Rather, what matters for the success or failure of this camera is if there are enough people interested to buy it. And it seems there are.

Thread is supposed to be about a monochromatic digital body from Pentax. I already shoot film. Pentax currently doesn't sell a film camera but it's good to see you're in support of them doing so, hopefully soon. Suggesting that if people want shallow depth of field that they need to shoot with film is probably the funniest thing I'll come across today.

---------- Post added 04-14-23 at 09:20 AM ----------

You're agreeing with me and some other folks with this suggestion of a 28mm f1.4. It would offer thin depth of field via fast aperture with a field of view that is quite normal, like the 43mm on full frame.

Nobody is saying "I want to emulate the look of a full frame camera". People are saying "I would like a fast aperture so, when I want a thin depth of field it's available to me, at a focal length that is very versatile on a crop body". That a number of folks decided that this is somehow wrong and pinned it to full frame says more about their own biases than they might realize.

Hoping for some different lens is not a thought crime.

Yes. To quote from the interview with Mr Takeo Suzuki: "The act of winding a camera manually is a special act that is unique to film."

As far as I'm concerned, the springs and cogs of a manual thumb wind are fundamental to the pleasure of using a film camera.

I posted this in the K30 and K50 forum but the moderator suggested I post it here.
Hi All

I have just received back my K-30 after having its solenoid replaced and it is working great. For all of you who, like me, are not DIYer's, I want to pass on and recommend someone in the US who can replace the solenoid. You will need to have a donor camera or the replacement solenoid. I sent him a K-X. Let him keep the 2nd solenoid.

Eric Wethington

He can either do filing method for $50 or replacement method (as long as donor solenoid is provided) for $75 plus return shipping. I know the filing method is frowned on here but he has had good luck with it.

He was great to work with. Straight forward with excellent communication and pictures of the work in progress. Let him know you were referred here. With the shipping both was the total for me was $109.

My local camera shop wouldn't even look at it.

Personally I doubt they have any "financial problem" outside of the fact they aren't making the ever-higher quarterly profits expected of them. They ain't losin' money, but not making as much as greed demands IMO.

Yeah its a funny old world isnt it, my OP was not long after acquiring my Pentax K1 and I suppose it was due to my relative lack of experience with the technology/brand and unfortunately discovering the Pentax is Doomed online brigade, plus at that time my reliance upon 3rd party lenses within the canon marquee made me some what unsure if I had made the right decision or not moving over to Pentax. A lot has changed since then, I have developed an unhealthy obsession of buying old and vintage Pentax lenses whilst also acquiring the vast majority of the modern line up and subsequent releases. So yeah quite an adventure since my first year.

CEO of Ricoh (the mother ship) talks about the future of PENTAX and GR

The chairman of Ricoh has basically said that the photography market is changing, Ricoh as a corporation is changing, and their camera division needs to change too. Really no surprises here. We all know the state of the world, surely.

What is impressive is that the chairman of a huge corporation is prepared to think carefully about the matter and try to ensure the continued heritage of a part of his company so small that it is probably worth about five minutes of his time per month, given what else he has on his plate. So my guess is that Ricoh will make best efforts to get a reasonable result and if they don't it won't be for lack of trying. Compare this to the brutal behaviour of many boardrooms, especially with very small divisions. The question here perhaps is whether Pentax and DSLRs are so closely wedded that one cannot exist without the other. What would change really involve? We may all have different opinions on that but I think the statement from Ricoh suggests that they are going to consider the whole thing much more carefully than many boardrooms might.

Beyond this, there really isn't anything a few customers can do. The pandemic has accelerated change in many areas of life and this is one of them. I still think Ricoh are missing a trick by leaving 'prosumer' medium format to Fujifilm. Not everyone at all wants a Canonikony clone which is the present scene in the upper levels of the FF market.

CEO of Ricoh (the mother ship) talks about the future of PENTAX and GR

There was an investor meeting of Ricoh Co. Ltd. (the mother ship, not the company that makes your camera, that's Ricoh Imaging Co. Ltd.) on Mar 3 2021. Ricoh as a group is a big business, consumer camera is just a tiny part of that. In the previous meeting (Nov 2020) Ricoh laid out a plan to become "digital service" company targeting other businesses, they continued the theme this time, but president/CEO Yamashita also talked a bit about the future of Pentax and GR.

To summarize: He expressed his (or Ricoh's) willingness to make PENTAX and GR continue for future as a valuable business. He said that they "will start searching for a way" to do it, that in doing so they hope they can work with outside partner(s). Later, when asked about accepting outside investment VS selling camera business, he said that they're willing to work with partners if necessary and are willing to invest, OTOH they won't be able to "fulfill responsibilities" (to make the brands continue) if they just sell the brands and therefore they need to think long and hard.

He chose words to convey his sense that it's their job to make sure that the heritage goes on, mentioning enthusiastic fans as the reason why he feels that way. OTOH, he signaled that the way Ricoh Imaging operates under Ricoh as of now cannot continue forever though he didn't make any definitive statements and certainly he didn't give any time scale.

You can stop right here unless you're really interested.

Below are English and Japanese version of the presentation. Relevant part is on page 9, but the sentence about SV (Smart Vision) doesn't make sense because the Japanese sentence wasn't great to start with. What does "integrate cameras (PENTAX and GR) into Ricoh Imaging" mean when Ricoh owns these brands anyway?

https://jp.ricoh.com/-/Media/Ricoh/Sites/jp_ricoh/IR/events/2020/pdf/r02_keiei.pdf (Japanese)

Redacted transcript (which seems to be only available in Japanese) is better.

Written at the bottom is about SV business. As for consumer cameras like PENTAX and GR, we'll start searching for a way to make them continue as a valuable business for future by integrating (business?) functions into Ricoh Imaging. We hope to be able to proceed with a help from outside parties. OTOH, 360 degrees camera and its optical technologies are essential for a digital service company, so we'll keep pushing that.

After the talk there was a Q&A, which was also published by Ricoh but it's a bit sanitized (Japanese, https://jp.ricoh.com/-/Media/Ricoh/Sites/jp_ricoh/IR/events/2020/pdf/presentation_qa_2020.pdf). You should read Impress Cloud Watch's report instead (again in Japanese):

President Yamashita said: "Camera business was competing by volume, making and selling large numbers. However, while taking care of GR and Pentax, I myself felt/appreciated that customers using our products are people who love the brand, or enthusiasts I might say, we don't sell our models in large numbers but we have fans. Because of this, we're thinking about how to make (the brands) continue for the future. If others share the same vision (of making these brands continue for the future) we're willing to work with them if necessary, and we are willing to invest if necessary. OTOH, if we just sell it, we cannot make sure that our responsibility (to continue the brand) will be fulfilled. We have to think long and hard.

Let's see how it goes.

I think the translation machine can not express my meaning very well. The new full frame sensor will have to wait half a year.
When I used Ricoh to get the news of the new sensor and asked if the full frame camera had started, the answer was No, still no project about it.
Now, Ricoh now has sensors cover APSC, full frame(after half a year), 44x33, but still no information can show us what is next camera. It can be confirmed that the full frame camera project has not started yet.
So, that's all I know. My guess is K-90, but it could also be K-1III. And the status may soon be changed in just a few weeks. It's like new 645 camera was suddenly suspended.

"In progress" might mean "actively worked on to bring to production". The camera might well have the component list and specs already drafted. The pentaprism of the K-3iii might already be worked on to adjust for FF, the new mirror/shutter assemblies might be being tested, etc.

Once the basic building blocks are sorted out "the camera" can go from design to prototype fairly quickly - seeing as the AF system will likely be the K-3iii's one (therefore not needing major work), the electronics will also probably be lifted from the same camera, etc... I wouldn't worry.

The only thing I can think about is that Nikon had already made a deal with Sony for the following X camera models and they aren't willing to put more money on the table to change sensors to this new one now.

From purely a money standpoint it doesn't make sense, no.

---------- Post added 03-05-21 at 03:42 AM ----------

Doubtful. The K-70 and K-3iii have OSPDAF.

Maybe the full framers will carry on without it to further differentiate and go for maximum, uncompromised IQ. But I expect some measure of OSPDAF to be present in all future cameras.
