Planning gear list for France in May 2016

Being from France, I may bring a couple of comments: your 645z would be most appropriate with low light situations: Paris at night, has most monuments (Louvre, Sacre Coeur, Tour Eiffel, Notre Dame...) illuminated, the best shots in Normandie and Champagne would be during "golden hours". In the south, french riviera, you'll be facing south, the best light is after sunrise. During the day, I might suggest CP or ND filters if shooting outside.
One more thing: watch out in Paris with pick pocket, you may want to use a bag that won't have a label: carrying photographic equipment inside.

My daughter is in gymnastic too, I shoot with 60-250mm with single focus point, I wouldn't go under 250mm, I'm planing to get X1.4 converter for this specific purpose of getting more close-up.

Strongly recommend the 16-50mm, never had any issues with it since I got it 3 years ago, superb optic, solid, weather resistance, just a joy to use it. If the SDM failed, I'll convert it to screw drive.

What do you photograph with the 60-250, 70-200?

I use the 60-250 for everything from landscape to portrait, sport, wildlife. It's just a superb lens. Picture are outstanding. Yes, it's big and heavy but managable, it's worth it when looking at the rewards. I suggest getting the manfrotto PL 3 in 1. Fantastic bag that can be a sling, bag back...Makes it really easy to carry heavy equipment, plus it helps you to stabilize the lens.

Hi folks,
What are your opinions comparing the da 60-250 to the HD 55-300? Could the 60-250 be considered a "walk around" lens or is it truly too big?
I have the da*16-50 and I couldn't be happier with it. Fantastic lens!
Thank you for your feedbacks

why da 16-50?

I'm sold on WR (less likely to get dusty in the long run), solid build (less likely to get damaged), picture quality (will have to learn the lens and its "sweet spot"), consistency. I'll cross my fingers with the SDM, but will try to get an extended warranty. Like any lens, hope I'll get a good copy.
Thanks all for your help.

I still have a day of sale with the 16-50, this tears me. I could see that, as a lifetime investment but I don't want to regret it at the end because of poor picture quality.
Thank for your help

Can you explain more about the "pentax cachet"? Is it about color rendition, contrast?
Yes, I can see the argument about longevity and solidity of the lens.
How much process work need to be done with pictures taken with 16-50? Is that because of the notorious CA?

Thank you

why da 16-50?

The more research on the da star 16-50 i'm dong, the more I become perplex about the lens comparing to its competitors (sigma, tamron). Why would you buy the more expensive star 16-50 when apparently its sharpnees, CA, vignetting, flare are not as good as the other third party brands? Besides the WR features of the 16-50, I don't see any other reason but then, this is quite a trade-off. With current sale I'm still debating, emotionally I would buy the 16-50 but rationally I cannot come up with a really good reason.
Can anyone give some reasons I can't think of?

Thank you

can't agree more,, 40mm is always on my K5, compact, easy to carry, sharp, allows me to take my camera almost anytime I go out, a lens that fits the quote: "the best camera is the one you have with you"

After reading more of your comments, I might take the plunge, and lean toward the 16-50. Might think I'm crazy given the 16-50 bad reputation (SDM, reviews..) but pictures look so sharp with this lens. Still scared by reliability though. What has been your experience?

I'm still debating between the Da*16-50 and Da 16-45. I recently posted a thread to help me out with my decision and I actually would tend to lean toward the 16-50. This might sound crazy given the bad reputation of this lens (SDM, review) but I got a chance to hold it and did couple of shots. I was impressed.
What has anyone experience been with this lens?

Thank you.

pentax da 16-45 vs 16-50 da* for K5?

Thank you all for your feedbacks, that helps with decision making. I have to say I might stay away from the 16-50 and go for the 16-45 because of SDM possible issue and questionable QC. I feel like the 16-50 is a little bit like a gamble: good copy translates to incredible lens but bad copy...? The other thing is, weight. I'll be traveling, the 16-45 might be more practical. Although if I pick the 16-45, I probably miss the f 2.8, WR and build quality.
Decision, decision...

pentax da 16-45 vs 16-50 da* for K5?

hello all,

Any thoughts, opinions on da 16-45 against 16-50 da * for K5?
I understand that the da 16-45 is out of production, but I can still get it used. A professional advised me not to get the 16-50 da* due to CA at all focal length, poor value and not as practical. The 16-45 seems to be sharps with great value, light, but I read that on K5, the lens doesn't show its full sharpness and remains somewhat disappointing.
Depending on which camera, lenses seem to perform differently.
Please give your opinions.
Thank you.

zoom for K5?

Thanks a lot for your opinions, that really helps about my decision. Since I'm thinking about a lens that'll be used more for portraits, indoor sports, indoor events (kids shows...), I might bite the bullet and go for the 50-135 due its wide aperture. The 60-250 could be a nice option but the size of it would deter me from carrying it around.
Now one more question: how can I make sure that the purchased lens is recent? If all possible, I'd like to buy a recently made one.
Thanks again

zoom for K5?

hello all,

I have a K5 with ltd 40, which I really love for its compactness and sharpness. Now I'm looking at expanding with the telephoto range.
Although I like shooting with prime lens (size, fast lens, fast AF), I'm looking at a zoom. I'm undecided between 50-135 da* and the new 55-300 WR. I'm listing the pros and cons I can think of:
55-300:
Pros: longer range, light, price, good review of sharpness (at least central) now hopefully improved the newer HD version
Cons: not fast, fair on border sharpness, CA, vignette at longer range.
50-135
Pros: sharpness, contrasts, overall great optics, fast lens
Cons: questionable SDM focus (although new versions seem more reliable), price, weight

My tendency would lean toward the da* to take full advantage of the K5

What are your opinions?

Thank you

Hello all,

I need to some feedback, opinion about lenses. I have a K5 with 40mm limited lens. For futher lenses I struggle between prime limited lenses and zoom lenses. Limited lenses give me incredible sharpness and "easy to carry" advantage but at the expense of having to change lenses according to situations. Zoom lenses are bigger, more expensive ( for the fast ones) with possibly less sharpness but then I get the versatilibitly of zooms.
What are your opinions about pentax (or third party) zoom lenses against limited pentax lenses.

Thank you all
