[my bolding]

Wow, just wow. That's incredibly bad form. I was going to look into b&h next time I am in NYC, but not sure now. I understand that they see extra risk in foreign customers, but surely a better way for them and the customer would be to charge the card when the order is complete but allow a few days before despatch to allow the payment to clear. If they are concerned about a recharge, they haven't protected themselves from this anyway. To treat a customer of 20+yrs standing in this way beggars belief.

Apple stops development of Aperture

These days I keep every file on a back up drive.... the files I lost were files that had been reduced in size for web use. I still had the originals, but reducing all those files in size represented hours of work. These days, every file I post from photobucket stays on a hard drive. over 200 GB so far of 150 MB files. This aperture thing means I have to get a drive big enough to dump all my Aperture libraries to, 25,000 files at 14MB to 24 MB a file. This is not a small thing.

As a 30 year user, at this point I'd have to say, with this last fiasco, first cancelling iWeb, then iDisk, now Aperture, everything that Apple did that made my life easier, they've taken away. And the new stuff they brought in to replace it, is stuff I could care less about. The guys who kept Apple in business through the tough years, hard core power users who needed to be able to do top quality work efficiently have been pretty much been dumped by Apple, so they can sell me an iPad that won't let me load some of the PDF books I was planning to read on it.

They've become what they thought they were rebelling against.

Well, it's here finally, and its just a WOW! of a bit of kit. I really thought it was going to be hard to top my beloved K-5, but I'm smitten.

I think most of the most important observations have already been made, but I have not seen anyone speak to the subtle difference in finish to the previous iteration bodies. (disclaimer, Ive not held a K-5 ii) The K-3 and matching grip has a more 'matt' finish compared to the K-5/7's finish which I'd describe as 'satin' in comparison. It's very nice, very classy, very black.

Some other observations which you will read elsewhere in differing language -

The autofocus has a confidence about it (dare I say a swagger?), it rarely hunts, it just says 'the focus point is here boss, whaddyawaitinfor? press the blessed shutter button'. No experiments with planes, trains or automobiles yet. But I did manage to capture a couple of birds feeding behind a wire fence where the AF points were small enough to ignore the fence and get the feathers. So far so good. Screw drive primes just snap in to focus as fast as the motor and helical allow. My longest DA lenses, the 50-135 and 60-250 find focus faster and with very little final adjustment. My Sigma 70-200 finds focus almost instantaneously. Confident is the word I would emphasise with the AF. I've little experience with comparable C&N camera's so I make no comparisons here.

8.3 FPS is seriously fast. My personal experiment with the buffer revealed a count of 77 frames of jpeg before the camera slowed to a more pedestrian pace. There is practically zero delay between taking a single image and it appearing on the LCD. Very impressive.

I've read where some folk say there is slightly more noise in this 24Mp sensor at high ISO's than there was in the K-5 sensor. I'll not argue the point, but I can't see it. The files look wonderfully clean to my eye, but I've not yet put them through a software torture test. Only viewing OOC Jpegs. Again, to my eye, the removal of the AA filter makes the images sharper then my K-5 in the same light, same lens. the K-5 images are comparable to the Type 1 setting, I would say.

I am still experimenting with the various AF modes, and a little unsure about where to set the re-focus delay. I'm thinking that it will be situation specific. Tracking a moving object through tree boughs? ok, thats one situation, set the appropriate re-focus delay. Tracking objects without obstruction moving toward you at high speed? set a different delay. We all need to experiment and find out how this feature is designed to work and the optimum setting. The user modes may prove very handy here.

I've not had a chance to get out my lenscal equipment yet, but all the lenses I've attached so far seem spot on in calibration, with the exception of the 50-135, which I fiddled with a little to get the focus roughly correct. Good result.

The rear LCD is just eye popping in its clarity. not quite i-pad great, but in the neighbourhood. There is an additional 4th scroll of the info screen to accommodate the GPS module/compass. There is a familiar Pentax logic to the screen layout and the menu system, far superior in my limited experience to the N or C menu's which have me confuzzled. I like the opportunity to set the screen to my preferred colour. I chose a cobalt blue scheme, but that will change over time and with my mood.

The viewfinder is bright and clear, not cluttered with information I don't need to see. Personally I don't see any significant difference to the viewfinder of my K-5, but the K-5 has a Canon S-type split screen installed, so that may make a difference.

The bundled flucard is easy to set up and 'just works'. The software interface is a little clunky, and not quite the experience of tethering into , say, lightroom or capture one. But hey, it imports files without me having to do the work manually, so I'm not complaining. I'm hopefully confident that the Pentax version of the Flucard will have a better interface experience.

i've never had any interest in video, and as far as i'm concerned the features of the K-3 as a vehicle for this form of expression may as well be non-existant, so I'm neither qualified nor passionate about this area. i'll leave it to others to comment.

I'm trying hard to think of a negative (after all of 5 hrs playing with the camera), the only three things that come to mind are -
1, it's hard to find the AF select button on camera left
2, my thumb, trained as it is to operate the K-5 AF button, keeps finding the AE-L button on the K-3 instead. This will improve with usage.
3, I miss ISO 80. I would have preferred if the Pentax engineers had gone the other way and extended the range down to ISO 50. Que sera sera.

These are Minor things, hardly worth mentioning, but presented in the interests of balance and full disclosure.

It took me several hours to even notice the word Ricoh on the rear of the camera, so that isn't an issue for me personally.

All in all, this is a seriously competent piece of kit. Well thought out, made for photographers, not for soccer Mums.

Kudos Ricoh/Pentax. A job very well done.

[[Some background for those interested. I came to Pentax about 6 years ago when a salesman actually steered me towards a K-2000d as the best camera for my needs, and best bang for buck. He pointed out I could pick up many inexpensive but high quality lenses from yesteryear which would work with the camera, and each stabilised, and the idea appealed to me. Since then I've acquired far too many lenses, far too much Pentax gear that gets rare use, and am now the proud owner of some of the finest pieces of photographic equipment ever made by anyone. Check my sig line. (all I lack is vision and talent, sadly)]]

The thing is, WE might not care, because WE know that under every "Ricoh" DSLR there's a Pentax, but on the outside, talk about Ricoh and people will think photocopiers, not cameras — if they think anything of it at all. I even had people be surprised that Pentax was still producing cameras and wasn't just some dead horse of the '80s, now imagine what recognition a camera that had Ricoh on the front would get. Case in point, I had professionals asking me why Pentax wasn't at the Salon de la Photo because they couldn't find a Pentax stand... with the quite visible Ricoh stand only a few meters away.

Now you'll say, yes but that's what Sony did with the rebranding of Konica-Minolta. Alright, but shall we agree that Sony is way, way more ubiquitous and known than Ricoh will ever be, and didn't need to be put on the radar as a brand, in general, when they took over the DSLR line?

Of course Ricoh will want that too at some point, they're the bigger player in regards to Pentax and will obviously want people to know their brand name rather than that of their now defunct acquisition. But I'm just saying we're living in a time of appearance over substance where if you're not in Nikon or Canon camp you can't be taken seriously, even if you offer a valid alternative (don't we know it!), and Ricoh really has to start from scratch building brand recognition for themselves... dropping the name Pentax straight away might be more hurtful than useful, you just can't make it happen overnight.

K-30 dynamic range

Coming from the K-r, I've been pretty impressed with the dynamic range of the K-30. I was out shooting this evening after a thunderstorm and decided to take a challenging shot and see how much shadows I could recover in Lightroom. This photo is not meant to be a work of art, just a test!

The first is the original RAW file exported as a jpg. The second is obviously the edit. All done in Lightroom. I didn't spend a lot of time on this, but I was pretty impressed. The noise level is not high at all in the shadow area and much detail and color information was salvageable. Much better performance than i could've gotten in a similar situation from my K-r.

Feel free to post your own examples!

I just did a quick test for fun as well. I'm loving my K-30 and do love the amazing ability to recover from a very bad or unusable image.

On the histogram of the RAW file there was barley a sliver of data on the edge of the left end. didn't expect anything but am very very impressed!

Please ignore the picture itself, I was just taking a quick test shot and expected nothing to show in the image at all. Color correction was done as well as Topaz DeNoise on Strong to clean the image up.

Who needs high ISO when you can do this?

Hehe, yes, I'm a closet Grammar Nazi.

I wouldn't say I disagree with how you think things should be, but I work for a company that does things the right way and really treats its customers right. . . we're getting our butts kicked in some areas by our ruthless competitors.

So I guess my sentiment about whether Pentax should go for the money grab on WR lenses is tainted. And it's not aimed at wanting Pentax to be ruthless in its competition with Canikon. I just want Pentax to continue its success and stick around and give us many years of awesome cameras.

Big booboo by Pentax to cheap out with the non-WR 18-55.

The WR adds PENNIES in material costs, and dimes in additional QC and re-works. I've designed and manufactured weather-resistant and water resistant products. There are some challenges, but it's not a big deal.

Welfi,

Right, the reason the extra bits that you cannot distinguish help is because when you do PP, things will not be completely blown out when you make adjustments of contrast, brightness, etc.

It's interesting that the software lets you do these adjustments before scan. I wonder if it actually affects the A/D conversion or if it's just really a PP in the scanning software. Sounds like it's the former.
There are now many scanners that have more than 8 bits per channel, ie. more than 24 bits total, which might serve you well.
For example this one which has been out for years and is still sold. I My father scanned many slides with an Epson scanner before he passed 2 years ago. I think this was the model. I believe my sister has it now.

EPSON Perfection V500 Photo Scanner - Product Information - Epson America, Inc.

It does 48 bit internal/external.
I now have one of these at home too . My partner is using it, I did not try it myself. But it claims to support 48 bit color, internal/external. It is under $150 on Amazon
I don't have many negatives, and no slides. I have never done much film .

Here are some examples. I am also able to bring out great amounts of detail in the shadows and highlights in color images using the "Selective Colors" menu in Photoshop. There are lots of interlocking variables with all those different color-adjustment sliders. It takes practice to learn how to balance them "just so," but it is well worth the trouble. I, therefore, think that even though a computer screen cannot show all of the colors in a 14-bit RAW image, and the human eye cannot see them either, their presence still allows one to pull out all those amazing details, including from images that are so underexposed that they are nearly black. There are a number of excellent examples of almost black K-5 RAW images here on PentaxForums and other sites that have been restored so that you could never tell that they had been severely underexposed. From what I've seen of some K-01 images, 12-bit RAW images may be sufficiently manipulable too. But the question is, are they as manipulable as 14-bit RAW images? And will I, an enthusiast, really ever be in a situation in which I wish my camera had 14-bit RAW capabilities? Possibly not, but it sure would be nice to have that option if I ever do want it.

Not being a professional, I don't own Photoshop. The software is way too expensive for an enthusiast, IMO. I did acquire a lot of consumer level Photo software over the years, mostly in "free after rebate" deals at Fry's. I have never really cared to do PP much . But recently that's changing a little now that I got Paintshot Pro x4 and Aftershot Pro.

IMO it takes way too much time still. I don't enjoy it at all. Which is why I have always shot JPEG. It's much easier to take another shot and delete the bad shots than to spend time trying to fix bad shots. But some shots cannot be taken away.
With the K-r at 6fps continuous, I find that I can handhold a 1600mm lens and get good shots. Just throw away all the blurry shots ... Much much better than PP ! :)

Yeah, I don't like to throw away my creations either. But I am going over old pics with a critical eye.
The PP might be helpful for the shots I took with my first digital camera, a 3MP olympus compact about 11 years ago.
Or with some cell phone pictures :)

That's already pretty good. I dislike Macs and apple products in general because they are so closed and cannot really be extended. I always end up filling all the drive bays and PCI slots in my computers ...

You are welcome. Please feel free to "like" my post . Apparently no one on this site likes me so far. :)

I find a few people on here, rather than just express an opinion on watever the OP is asking, they rather try and have a childish argument with those that
express there thoughts and opinions. I had a post removed for one of my replies to one of these people. So now, rather than get worked up over childish rants
I just instantly stick them on the ignore list. Problem solved lol Saves a lot of arguing.
